Soweto Teen Baffles Network Providers by Guessing Airtime Vouchers When He's High.
South African mobile networks are scrambling to find a solution to an unusual problemโa teenage boy from Soweto who can accurately guess airtime voucher codes whenever he is high on the street drug Nyaope.
Eighteen-year-old Hlamulo has been supporting his family for the past two years by selling airtime vouchers at significantly lower prices than their actual value.
According to his older sister, Hlamulo only needs to be in an intoxicated state to start generating valid airtime codes. He even knows which network the codes belong to before reciting them.
โI always keep a pen and paper nearby whenever he gets high,โ she explained. โHe doesnโt bother with small amounts like R5 or R10. He starts at R50 and above, which we sell at a 20% discount. I started keeping track in January, and so far, we've made R35,500.โ
During our interview, Hlamulo, visibly high, suddenly muttered โVodacomโ before rattling off a sequence of numbers. To our astonishment, the code turned out to be a valid R55 Vodacom airtime voucher, which we purchased for just R40.
Authorities say there is no legal action they can take against him since he technically hasnโt committed a crime. โIf he is found in possession of illegal drugs, he could be arrested for that, but guessing airtime codes isnโt a chargeable offense,โ a police spokesperson stated.
In response, Vodacom and Cell C have reportedly offered to send Hlamulo to rehab in hopes of stopping his activities and helping him overcome his addiction.
What do you think is going on here?

โ ๏ธ STAIN WARNING: THE TRAGEDY OF ALCOHOL ADDICTION โ ๏ธ
Jide once had it allโan enviable career, a loving family, and the respect of his peers. A top banker, he was the man everyone looked up to. Sharp suits, a brilliant mind, and a future so bright, it was almost blinding. But somewhere along the line, the after-work drinks turned into a daily ritual. One bottle became two, two became five, and before long, he could no longer function without alcohol in his system.
His once-thriving career took a hit. Missed deadlines, poor decisions, and constant lateness made him a liability to the bank. The whispers in the office turned into outright confrontations, and eventually, he was let go. But even that wasnโt enough to wake him up.
His home became a battlefield. His wife, tired of broken promises and empty pockets, left with their children. Friends who once cheered him on at the bar began to distance themselves. Jide was now aloneโwith nothing but empty bottles and shattered dreams.
Now, he sits at a dingy bar, wearing the remnants of his former life. His expensive suit is wrinkled, his once-focused eyes now bloodshot. The only thing that remains unchanged is the drink in his handโhis most loyal companion, yet his worst enemy.
Alcohol addiction is a slow poison. It doesnโt kill instantly, but it destroysโbit by bit, day by day.
If you or someone you know is struggling, seek help before itโs too late. Donโt let alcohol stain your destiny.

Maria Ochefu, the visionary entrepreneur behind Nigeriaโs famous Mammy Market, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 18, 2025, in Makurdi, Benue State, at the age of 86. Her passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy continues to thrive in military barracks, NYSC camps, and university hostels across the country.

The origins of Mammy Market date back to 1959 when Maria Ochefu, then a young wife of a soldier stationed at the Abakpa Military Barracks in Enugu, began selling kunu, a locally brewed millet drink, to soldiers. Her business quickly gained popularity, attracting fellow military wives who also set up stalls to sell various goods and services.
To formalize this growing commercial hub, military authorities designated a dedicated space within the barracks for these businesses, naming it after Maria, who was affectionately called โMammyโ by soldiers. This name stuck and became synonymous with similar marketplaces established in military formations across Nigeria.

Mammy Markets are more than just places of trade; they are social and cultural hubs where military personnel, their families, and civilians converge to unwind. Across different formations, the markets provide many benefits which includes:
Affordable goods and services. Everything from food and drinks to clothing and electronics is available at reasonable prices.
You may have heard that many Mammy Markets are known for their lively nightlife, featuring music, dance, and traditional delicacies like suya and pepper soup. The night is always a fun time in most barracks.
The markets foster social interaction among soldiers, families, and civilians, creating a unique communal atmosphere. Economically, they provide business opportunities for military spouses and civilians, contributing to local economies.

While Mammy Markets offer numerous benefits, they are not without challenges. Some of the prevalent concerns include:
Security Risks. This is due to their open nature, some markets have become hotspots for criminal activities, including theft and illicit trade.
Health Concerns in some cases, poor hygiene standards in food preparation have led to health hazards for patrons.
Disruptions and Noise Pollution coming from the vibrant nightlife, while enjoyable, sometimes disrupts military discipline and the peaceful environment of the barracks. Reports of unauthorized activities of gambling, drug use, and other vices in some Mammy Markets have raised concerns among military authorities.

In contemporary times, Mammy Markets have evolved beyond their initial purpose. They have become places where traders introduce new products, cultural events take place, and even political discussions are held. In some locations, modern business structures have replaced traditional stalls, making the markets more organized. However, issues such as price inflation and occasional conflicts between traders and security personnel remain prevalent.

As Mammy Markets continue to expand, there is a need for better regulation and modernization. Possible improvements include:
Enhanced Security Measures to curb crime and ensure a safer environment.
Improved Sanitation and Infrastructure. Military management can invest in upgrading stalls, waste management, and hygiene standards to prevent health issues.
Formalization of Businesses by providing training and certification for traders to enhance service delivery.
Digital Integration such as exploring cashless transactions and online marketplaces to modernize trading activities. The best place to start would be the Mammy market in the NYSC Camps.
It is noteworthy to say that Maria Ochefuโs contribution to Nigerian society through Mammy Markets remains invaluable. What started as a simple business venture has grown into a national institution, providing livelihoods, fostering social bonds, and enriching Nigeriaโs military culture. As these markets evolve, their impact on commerce and society will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.

In a land far away, lives a man so powerful that his word could make kings or turn princes into beggars. He built his empire not on love, but on fearโdeciding who thrived and who perished in the game of power.
At first, he wielded influence like a skilled player, but soon, it consumed him. Power was no longer a tool; it was an ADDICTION, coursing through his veins, numbing his soul, stripping him of empathy. He saw himself as untouchable, invincible, until his body betrayed him.
At an event, beneath the gaze of those who once trembled before him, he slumped. The once-mighty godfather, who had dictated the fate of many, now lay powerless. News of his illness spread like wildfire, but instead of prayers, the air was thick with whispers. Some masked their joy with silence, others barely hid their smirks. It wasnโt an outpouring of concern, it was karma, they said. A man who had thrived on control now couldnโt even command his own body.
This is the curse of power addiction. Addiction isolates, it blinds, and in the end, it leaves its victims vulnerable, not just to sickness, but to the cold indifference of the people they once ruled.
No throne is eternal. No man is invincible. Power borrowed today must be returned tomorrow, and how one chooses to wield it determines whether they will be remembered with love or with relief.
When the time comes, will they pray for you or celebrate your fall?
