Why I refused Tyson Fury face-off – Joshua

Tyson Fury has suggested he has signed to face Anthony Joshua, but it appears nothing is imminent as of yet.

The ‘Gypsy King’ made a successful return outpointing Arslanbek Makhmudov in London at the weekend.

He then made a beeline for long-term heavyweight rival Joshua who watched on from ringside seemingly waiting in the rings.

But unlike many expected, AJ refused to jump in the ring and come face-to-face with his fellow Briton.

The pair instead exchanged words from opposite sides of the ropes, with Netflix and Turki Alalshikh teasing a fight agreement for this summer.

Joshua later clarified that he didn’t entertain any promotional antics as he didn’t want to take the limelight from Fury, but also that nothing is yet set in stone.

He said: “It’s on him. It’s been hard to get it done in the past.

“Look, he’s the one that retired. I’ve been in the game, never retired. I’ve been standing strong for the last 13 years. It’s on him.

“He disappears, come back, disappears. I’m not here to chase fame, or chase hype.

“I’m a real person and fight whoever is in front of me, whether it’s him or the next person. It don’t matter to me.”

On whether the Fury fight is signed to come next, he added: “[Fury] could be a warm-up fight after what I saw tonight.

“We’ll see. I was just in a serious incident just four months ago and I need to see what’s going on with my return to the ring.

“I’m here and keeping my eye on the game. There’s real stuff happening in my life.”

So for Joshua, the formalities are yet to be completed with a plan not yet set in stone.

The former champion is likely to take a warm-up fight, given he was involved in a car accident in December, and has not competed since.

But Fury is ready to go now and is trying to lure AJ into taking the fight immediately.

Netflix teased that the fight could come on the streaming service in the autumn period.

And the Morecambe giant said he’d signed an agreement and hoped the Joshua fight was on it.

Ghanaian footballer killed as armed attackers opened fire on team bus

Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong has died after suspected armed robbers opened fire at the bus carrying his team Berekum Chelsea back from a match.

“Masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” ambushed the bus and “blocked the road” as the team returned home on Sunday, according to the club.

Police say Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds and died while receiving treatment. A manhunt for the suspects is under way.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed its “profound shock and deep sorrow”, describing the 20-year-old as a “promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league”.

The team was on the road back from a Ghana Premier League game against Samartex in Samreboi – 270km (170 miles) away from Berekum – which they lost 1-0.

“[The men] started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse,” Berekum Chelsea said in a statement on Monday. “The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”

According to Ghanaian authorities, the bus had been carrying 30 players and officials when it came under attack by six armed men.

The police said its regional command has “deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area”, and added that “perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time”.

The GFA said it was in contact with the relevant authorities and the club, urging that “all necessary measures” should be taken to ensure justice is served.

In a separate statement, the Ghana Premier League expressed its “unwavering backing” for the team during their “difficult moment”, and called on security agencies to take “urgent steps to safeguard all participating clubs” as they travel for matches across the country.

Sunday’s attack once again highlights longstanding concerns over safety on major roads in Ghana.

In recent years, clubs including FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities and AshantiGold have reportedly experienced similar attacks.

Ghanaian sports journalist Muftawu Abdulai described the mood in the country as one of “shock and disappointment”, noting that fans are increasingly questioning whether it is “safe to travel and play league matches”.

“If the lives of the people or the key architect of the game cannot be protected then it is not worth playing the game,” Abdulai told BBC Sport Africa.

The GFA said it will be reviewing and strengthening security arrangements for clubs travelling for competitions within Ghana to “prevent such tragic occurrences in the future”.

Frimpong had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January.

The forward was set to stay at the team until the end of the premier league season. He had scored two goals in 13 appearances.

Berekum Chelsea were originally called Semereka FC when the club was formed in 2000.

Four years later, the name changed following the transfer of former Ghanaian national star Michael Essien to Chelsea, which sparked a rise in popularity for the English Premier League team in Ghana.

Missing Chibok schoolgirls 10 years after metaphor for neglect, MMF CEO warns

As the world marks twelve years since the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in North East Nigeria, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) has called for renewed accountability, warning that the tragedy has come to symbolise a broader pattern of neglect and diminishing global urgency.

In a statement released alongside its latest report, MMF said that 89 of the girls remain unaccounted for, underscoring the extent to which the crisis remains unresolved more than a decade later.

According to the Foundation, 187 of the girls have either escaped or been released and rescued since the abduction on April 14, 2014. In addition, over 40 children have been born in captivity and returned with their mothers, reflecting the long-term human consequences of the abduction.

Despite these developments, MMF noted that progress has slowed significantly, with no confirmed recovery of a Chibok girl in the past year.

“Chibok has become more than a place or a moment in time,” Chief Executive Officer of MMF, Dr. Aisha Muhammed Oyebode said. “It is now a metaphor for neglect—of responsibility, of accountability, and of our collective empathy for those who continue to live with the consequences of this tragedy.”

The Foundation warned that the Chibok abduction, once a defining moment of global outrage, now reflects a broader failure to sustain attention and follow through on commitments. It further noted that subsequent abductions of schoolchildren across Nigeria have reinforced fears among families and undermined confidence in the safety of education, particularly for girls.

“What Chibok exposed was not only a security failure, but a failure of sustained attention—the inability to begin and to finish, to respond and to follow through,” the statement said.

MMF called on the Government of Nigeria to intensify efforts to locate those still missing and to ensure transparency and accountability in its response. It also urged the United Nations and the international community to renew engagement and support coordinated efforts to protect children and safeguard education in conflict-affected regions.

The Foundation emphasised that the long-term impact of the abduction extends beyond those still missing, affecting survivors, families, and entire communities. Many girls have experienced disrupted education, prolonged trauma, and uncertain futures.

“Chibok must not be remembered only as a tragedy,” the CEO said. “It must remain a call to action. Until every missing girl is accounted for, this responsibility remains unfinished.”

I’ll decide on Abia gov’norship contest soon, says Reps Dep Speaker

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has promised to respond to calls to contest for the Abia State governorship in the 2027 general election soon.

Kalu, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, stated this at an All Progressives Congress ( APC) stakeholders meeting in Umuahia.

The statement noted that the stakeholders from Abia South, Abia Central and Abia North senatorial districts had earlier endorsed Kalu for the governorship position, expressing confidence that he would run an inclusive government.

While stating that he had previously received similar calls from the 17 local government areas in the state to contest the governorship, Kalu expressed gratitude for the endorsement, promising to declare soon.

“On your request to me to contest for Governor, I have received same request from several local governments, my response is going to be made available in a few weeks time.

“I want to thank you for finding me worthy. I will give my response to a larger body in the open where everyone who is not in this room will hear us. I will respond to your request. When that response comes, you will be happy.

“Make sure when I invite you, come with those who are running for House of Assembly, Reps and senate. That day, we will give them the platform to address our party people across Abia,” Kalu stated.

He emphasised the party’s priority was to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

“I greet everyone that came from various local governments today, everyone that supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Renewed Hope Agenda. May God bless you all.

“Everyone that wants the state to be good, will enjoy the fruit of their labour. President Tinubu loves and supports us so we will give back to him.

“The number one agenda is to make sure that the mandate of the President is renewed in 2027,” he declared.

Police dismisses 5 officers over extortion, harassment in Edo.

Edo State Police Command has dismissed five of its operatives over alleged harassment, abduction, and extortion of members of the public.

Spokesman of the Command, Eno Ikoedem, in a statement, said the syndicate was made up 10 members including discharged police officers, POS operators and bus drivers.

She gave the name of the suspects as Goodluck Jaja ‘M’ (POS Operator), ASP Bonny Onajite, Inspector Ehubarieme Wisdom ‘M’, Inspector Arebame God’s Power ‘M’, Corporal Mordi Philip ‘M’, Destiny Emmanuel ‘M’ (Dismissed Police Corporal), Corporal Okon Elvis ‘M’, Samuel Nicholas ‘M’ (Mini Bus Driver) and Etim Bright ‘M’ (Mini Bus Driver)

“The Edo State Police Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, wishes to inform the general public of a major breakthrough in the fight against criminal elements disguising as law enforcement officers to perpetrate heinous crimes within Benin City and its environs.

“The Command had, in recent times, received several complaints from members of the public alleging harassment, abduction, and extortion by individuals posing as police officers.

“These suspects reportedly operate along Teboga axis off Aduwawa, where they unlawfully stop unsuspecting citizens, forcefully convey them around various roads within Benin City, and eventually take them to Point of Sale (POS) operators to fraudulently extort money from them under duress,” the statement said.

Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, disturbed by the gravity of these allegations, ordered a discreet and intelligence-driven investigation into the matter, the Ikoedem added.

She stated that through sustained surveillance, technical intelligence, and coordinated operations by operatives of the command, the criminal network was successfully busted.

She said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects, including some serving and dismissed police personnel, formed a well-organized criminal syndicate responsible for a series of serious crimes including abduction and extortion of innocent citizens.

She said the suspects exploited police equipment to deceive victims and carried out their operations with impunity, thereby bringing the name of the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.

“Those that are serving personnel have been dismissed. Upon conclusion of these processes and the ongoing investigation, they will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction to face the full weight of the law.

“The Command hereby calls on all victims who may have encountered or fallen prey to this organised criminal gang to come forward and assist the Police with useful information that will aid further investigation and prosecution.

“Furthermore, the Edo State Police Command uses this medium to strongly warn all POS operators and merchants to be wary of any individual, including persons in police uniform, who attempt to use their facilities for unlawful transactions or extortion. Any POS operator found to be complicit in such illegal activities will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly”, the statement warned.

The Command reassures the good people of Edo State of its unwavering commitment to sanitizing the system, restoring public confidence, and ensuring that no individual, regardless of status, is above the law in line with the mandate of the Inspector-General of Police of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
