The Nigerian power sector is on the brink of collapse due to what has been described as gross incompetence by its leadership.
According to a statement issued by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero on Tuesday, the sector's woes stem from the failure of key regulatory and operational bodies to fulfill their responsibilities.
Ajaero criticised the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for its inability to effectively regulate the sector, despite the extensive powers granted to it under the Electricity Act of 2023.
He further accused the Minister of Power of prioritising frivolous expenditures, including a proposed N8 billion allocation in the 2025 federal budget to "sensitize Nigerians on how to pay electricity bills."
The NLC President highlighted the persistent collapse of the national grid, attributing it to greed and mismanagement.

Obasa was elected speaker of the Lagos assembly in 2015 and was in his third term.
Mojisola Meranda, Obasa's deputy, was elected as the new speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the impeachment, Abiodun, who was flanked by other lawmakers, said the decision to impeach Obasa was a unanimous one.
Abiodun said members of the assembly had enough of Obasa’s leadership.

Facts are emerging on why the former speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa was removed.
Fouad Oki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said Obasa’s impeachment as speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly was necessary to hold him accountable for his actions.
According to Oki, anyone familiar with Lagos politics could have envisaged Obasa’s impeachment, noting that he had begun to see himself as an “emperor”.
The APC chieftain said events of the last three months had also suggested that Obasa’s days were numbered.
“He saw himself as an emperor. It became undeniable that there was a need for a change in the leadership of the parliament in Lagos,” Oki said.
“If you cast your mind back, you must have seen this coming in the last 18 months.
“Recall the events on the day when the governor presented the 2025 appropriation bill and the leadership of the party was invited to the convention.
