We just got 1 step closer to AGI…..

OpenAI has announced o3, their latest foundation model, as the finale of their “12 Days of Shipmas” event. The model appears to represent a significant advancement in multi-step reasoning capabilities.

During a Friday livestream, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized this as the beginning of a new AI phase, highlighting the model’s ability to handle increasingly complex, reasoning-intensive tasks. According to OpenAI, the o3 model demonstrates substantial improvements over its predecessors, particularly in coding, advanced mathematics, and scientific reasoning.

A notable achievement is o3’s performance on the ARC-AGI benchmark, which tests AI models’ ability to solve novel mathematical and logical problems. The ARC-AGI organization reports that:

* o3 achieved 75.7% on the Semi-Private Evaluation set (within the $10k compute limit)
* A high-compute version scored 87.5% (using 172x more compute)
* This represents a dramatic improvement from GPT-3’s 0% in 2020 and GPT-4o’s 5% in 2024

The ARC-AGI organization describes this as a fundamental breakthrough in LLM capabilities, particularly in the ability to recombine knowledge during testing through “LLM-guided natural language program search.”

OpenAI is releasing two versions - o3 and o3-mini - though they aren’t immediately available to the public. The company plans to begin with a limited testing program that outsiders can apply to join.

The announcement generated various community responses:

* Some users expressed frustration about access to previous models
* Others raised concerns about pricing and accessibility across different regions
* There were questions about availability for Pro users
* Some comments reflected both excitement about progress and concerns about the pace of AI development
