Part 1 – The Battle That Changed My Plate Forever
The year 2013 would remain indelible in the history of my life. It was the year I gave birth to my last child after six years of my last conception. As the pregnancy progressed, so many health problems surfaced. The night before I had the baby, I had experienced headaches, heart burns, and body pains that kept me awake all through the night. As soon as the day broke, I was at the hospital with my complaints.
After my vital signs were checked, I had noticed there was a look of concern from the nurses. The doctor had come in with instructions to the nurses and I was given some medications and injections. After about an hour, the doctor rushed in and said,
“Madam, we need to operate now — it’s the only way to save you and your baby.”
My husband consented and before I could even process the information, I was being wheeled into the theatre for an emergency C-section.
By God’s grace, we survived. But what came after was nothing like I imagined.
As a breastfeeding mother then, everyone kept telling me, “Eat well so you can produce enough milk.” But eating became my biggest nightmare. Then anytime and anything I ate, my body would fight back — bloating, palpitations, indigestion, headaches. I began to fear food. Imagine sitting in front of a plate, wondering if your next bite will make you sick.
I went back to the hospital and explained my symptoms to the doctor. I was hoping for a real solution, but all I got was more drugs to “manage” the problem. When things didn’t improve, I begged him to refer me to a nutritionist or dietician. He waved it off and gave me even more drugs, assuring me, “You’ll be fine.” But I wasn’t fine.
That was when I began to ask myself:
1. Why was my body rejecting what should be helping me heal?
2. Could the food I was eating actually be the problem?
And since the doctor wasn’t going to help, I decided to help myself. One day, I walked into a bookshop and went straight to the health and lifestyle section. That day, I left with two books that would change everything. I read them like my life depended on it — because it did.
I didn’t know it then, but that was the beginning of a journey that would completely change the way I saw food, health, and healing.
In my next post, I would be sharing the shocking truth I discovered about what was really on my plate…
Stay tuned
