"She must be a very intelligent girl for her to read like this". I know that is what you are thinking right now. Well, you are not totally right because any other 3 years old that is taught using the same method can actually do this. As a matter of fact, the girl did not pick up quickly like other 3 years old I taught.

Reading is the major determinant of children's academic performance. All subject taught in school (including mathematics) involve reading. Children that can't read do perform poorly in school.
Despite the popularity of *PHONICS* among schools today, there are still children who still can't read. The reason it is still not effective are as follows;
1. Lack of *PHONEMICS AWARENESS* skill. Most teachers know phonics but don't know phonemic awareness.
2. Teaching of phonics wrongly. Phonics is not like whole word (conventional) method where anybody can just use.
3. Not incorporating sight words to the phonics lesson.
4. Not applying phonics in reading of sentences and stories for mastery.
5. Not using synthetic, systematic and explicit phonics.
Most teachers only focus on the less necessary things which have little or no effect to children's reading instead of putting more attention to certain activity.
I know you might want to argue with the uppercase letters and not reading smoothly. This 3 years old child is taught uppercase and letter name in his school. To avoid confusion, I teach with what he is familiar with. Don't forget that practice make perfect. Sooner, this child won't be sounding and blending while reading stories.

The most interesting part is, the very boy is familiar with only letter names and capital letters. But with our reading program, we were able to teach him using the upper case so as not to creat too much confusion.
