Why Expansion Joints Are Important!
The roof slab is constantly exposed to heat from the sun. When the sun heats up the screed, its temperature rises and it expands. Later in the evening, when it cools down, it contracts.
These repeated cycles of expansion and contraction cause movement within the screed. Without an expansion joint, that movement can lead to cracks or even lifting of the screed.
Expansion joints act as planned weak points, allowing all that natural movement to happen in a controlled way instead of creating random cracks across the surface.
They also help improve the durability and lifespan of the waterproofing system, if there is no expansion joint and cracks appear, the cracks can break the waterproof layer and cause leaks.
