Recently, I was involved in a workshop for social work practice educators and I considered the experiences of Minority Ethnic (ME) students on practice learning placements and explored what it means to be an ally in practice education. I looked at the key issues for ME social work students and suggested introducing the UBUNTU (Olusa, 2023) and/or MANDELA (Tedam, 2011) philosophy within practice learning environments....

The world has become one where the 'all-powerful' can get away with anything. The more power you have, may it be in the form of inordinate amount of money, ammunitions of war, compromised legal systems, the control of social narrative, and religious subjugation of the populace; then you can do almost anything and get away with it. An explanation will always be given to explain the atrocities the powerful commits....

Ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ bàjé, ẹ ní ó pọn (impending rot in the plantain or banana, interpreted as the ripening of same)! The adage above is very appropriate to this junction we find ourselves in my country of birth. The truth has seemingly fled our social and political space, the morals and values we held very dear have suddenly taken flight to places unknown....

Over the last few weeks, this title has been on my mind as I reflected on some personal experiences and the political situation in the country of my birth. I have been thinking about the term and wondering about people's ability to rewrite their history to fit the narrative they want to use to whitewash their present. It is truly a 'miracle' that a person's story can be so shrouded in mystery and yet they can give flimsy excuses as to why they should not be questioned or scrutinised....

The term 'outcome' is often used in social care, but I do not think the definition is as easy to identify as the usage. In the recent past, numerous studies have looked at the term and tried to agree on a universal definition, but, especially in social work, the exact definition is not clear to me as a practitioner. However, there is one definition that works for me and on which I try to foundation my practice....

One thing the coup in Niger has brought up for me is the possible change in the status quo. Africans are becoming very restless, more aware of the supposed benefits of democracy. Africans are more questioning of the exploits of the Western nations who come bearing gifts that can only be activated through democracy. No doubt there are benefits around democracy....

Ageist is a noun to describe individuals with ageist views. Meaning they are characterized by or showing discrimination on account of a person's age. This discourse around age and tribal affiliations came to the fore during the last elections in Nigeria and I continue to dwell on it, in light of the recent 'selection or election' of Scotland's First Minister....

As a professional, I am disappointed with the way my profession is being run at national and local levels. I am disappointed that a profession I have put a lot of sweat into is being run in such a way that I feel people like me will become extinct. I am afraid that at some point I will have to bow to the pressure and throw in the towel....

What does kindness have to do with social work practise? I say a lot! I argue that kindness and social work practise are closely intertwined and that this quality enables the application of the approaches I have learnt during my studies and in the course of my practise experience. Kindness is described as a behaviour characterised by generosity, consideration, helping, or caring for others, without expecting praise or reward in return....

Copy of blog shared on another platform: Social work practice is hard and requires a high level of resilience, that statement is a basic fact. Social work practice as a Minority Ethnic Person (MEP) is even harder, however, that is not so much a known fact. As a social scientist, I know and understand that my statements should be backed with data or references, but not in this particular instance....

Social work practice involves support and intervention, including engagement with some very traumatic and chaotic situations. The situations we intervene in as practitioners can also include a lot of unknowns. As such, there is a dependence on the information we get from the person or their family member during a process of information gathering, otherwise known as assessment. As a practitioner, I do not know the basics of the situation nor what has been happening for them or their day-to-day routines, so I need to ask questions, seek to understand their needs, and then work with them to find resolutions....

Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed and equality before the law. Liberals typically believe that government is necessary to protect individuals from being harmed by others, but they also recognise that government itself and institutions can pose a threat to liberty. Conservatism is a commitment to traditional values and ideas with opposition to change or innovation....
