🚫 The Don’ts in Starting Your Hotel Business
Starting a hotel is more than constructing a beautiful building — it’s about building a sustainable business model. Many self-investors make costly mistakes at the foundation stage. Here are some “don’ts” to avoid when starting your hospitality business:
1. Don’t focus only on the building.
A hotel is more than walls, marble, and furniture. Service, systems, and experience matter more than shiny infrastructure.
2. Don’t ignore feasibility studies.
Skipping market research leads to overbuilt hotels in the wrong locations, with wrong room mix, or unsuitable pricing.
3. Don’t underplay pre-opening planning.
Hiring staff one week before opening or skipping soft-launch testing will hurt your operations from day one.
4. Don’t assume guests will come because it’s new.
A strong sales and marketing plan is needed to attract and retain guests — “build it and they will come” is a myth in hospitality.
5. Don’t ignore standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Without structured systems, service will be inconsistent, leading to guest dissatisfaction and financial losses.
6. Don’t neglect training.
Employees are the face of your hotel. Cutting corners on training creates poor guest experience no matter how luxurious the property looks.
7. Don’t open without clear financial controls.
Many hotels bleed money because there’s no system for monitoring cost of operations, payroll, and procurement.
8. Don’t try to manage everything alone.
Engaging experienced consultants or a management company early can save you from costly mistakes and guide your team to success.
