The University College of Medicine has thrown out belongings of students from halls of residence in the institution.

SaharaReporters gathered the institution had asked graduating students to resume as ordered by the state government and informed others to move out their properties from the hostels.

Schools in the state had been closed since March as part of measures to curb the spread of Coronavirus.

The governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, recently directed all tertiary institutions under the state to reopen on September 14.

“After the reopening, the state government asked that only students in exit classes should resume and also instructed students in middle classes to move their things out of the hostel.

“But some of them couldn’t come back to pick their belongings because they are not in Lagos. I think this is very insensitive and silly, there should be a way to help them manage their belongings rather than throwing them out like that,” a student said.

Many items belonging to students including electronics were left in the rain after they were thrown out by the school’s management.

When contacted, Coordinator, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations of the university, Mr Ademola Adekoya, feigned ignorance of the development, promising to get back to our correspondent when he has enough information on the incident.

Commenting on the development, however, Acting Provost of the Lagos State University College of Medicine, Prof Abiodun Adewuya, said, “Students left March and we asked them to move all their belongings out of the hostel because we want to renovate the hostels.

“We are renovating our hostels, we had given the notice a long time ago, the students’ body sent the notice to all the classes and the idea is that after a deadline, if there are things that are still there, we will move them out so that we can renovate the rooms, that’s the situation.”

The former monarch of Spain, King Juan Carlos I, says he is leaving to live in another country, weeks after he was linked to an investigation into allegations of corruption.

In June, Spain's Supreme Court opened an investigation into Juan Carlos's involvement with a high-speed rail contract in Saudi Arabia after Switzerland's La Tribune de Geneve newspaper reported he had received $100 million from Saudi Arabia's late King Abdullah.

Through his lawyer, Javier Sanchez-Junco, Juan Carlos, who is 82, has declined to comment on the allegations.

Sanchez-Junco said in a brief statement on Monday that the former king had asked him to make clear that even though he will be outside Spain he intends to be available to cooperate with the investigation.

It was not immediately clear whether Juan Carlos was still in Spain, but El Mundo newspaper reported that Juan Carlos had already left the country.

"I am informing you of my considered decision to move, during this period, out of Spain," Juan Carlos said in a letter to his son King Felipe published on the royal family's website on Monday.

The former king said he made the decision against the backdrop of "public repercussions of certain episodes of my past private life," adding that he wanted to ensure he does not make his son's role difficult.

"My legacy and my own dignity demand that it should be so," he said without specifying which country he will be moving to.

King Felipe thanked Juan Carlos for his decision, underlining "the historic importance that his father's reign represents" for democracy in Spain.

He also reaffirmed "the principles and values on which it (democracy) is based according to our Constitution and legal framework".

A 'disturbing' investigation
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez recently said he found the developments about Juan Carlos, including investigations in Spain and Switzerland, "disturbing".

The 82-year-old former king is credited with helping Spain peacefully restore democracy after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975.

But marred by scandals in the later years of his reign, Juan Carlos in 2014 abdicated in favour of his son Felipe VI, losing the inviolability protection Spain's constitution grants to the head of state.

After media reports claimed Felipe was a beneficiary of an offshore account holding an alleged 65 million-euro gift ($76 million) from Saudi Arabia to Juan Carlos, Felipe renounced any future personal inheritance he might receive from the former king. Felipe also stripped his father of his annual stipend of 194,232 euros ($228,000).

The royal house has denied that Felipe had any knowledge of his father's alleged financial irregularities.

The Chinese government says there’s no clause in the $500 million loan it gave to Nigeria that include taking over its sovereignty.

The House of Representatives had in the probe of Chinese loans to Nigeria alleged that the agreements ceded Nigeria’s sovereign right on the assets financed by the loans to China if there was payment default.

However, the Chinese foreign ministry in a statement debunked the claim saying the country had no such plan.

“We follow a “five-no” approach in our relations with Africa: no interference in African countries’ pursuit of development paths that fit their national conditions; no interference in African countries’ internal affairs; no imposition of our will on African countries; no attachment of political strings to assistance to Africa; and no seeking of selfish political gains in investment and financing cooperation with Africa,” the ministry quoted President Xi Jinping, as saying at the FOCAC Beijing Summit in 2018.

The ministry added that “China is committed to enhancing investment and financial cooperation with African countries based on their needs to help them improve infrastructure and extradite socioeconomic development.

By funding infrastructure and other areas that lag behind for short of money, we have helped the relevant countries break bottlenecks, enhance their capacity for independent development, realize social and economic sustainable development, and improve people’s livelihood.

Such cooperation has delivered tangible benefits to African countries and peoples.

“In the process, China always gives full consideration to debt sustainability and seeks mutually-acceptable proposals through equal and friendly consultations.

That is the fundamental reason behind the enormous popularity of China-Africa cooperation in Africa.

US senators have been accused of falling asleep, playing games and breaking other rules during President Donald Trump's impeachment trial.

Jim Risch and Jim Inhofe are among members who have apparently nodded off during the lengthy hearings.

Crossword puzzles, fidget spinners and at least one paper airplane have been spotted with senators.

The trial has heard that Mr Trump's alleged abuse of power threatens American democracy.

The senators are acting as the jury to decide whether the president should be removed from office.

The upper chamber of US Congress prides itself as a hallowed sanctum of decorum.

But some of its members - Republican and Democrat alike - have this week been accused by US media of acting like bored schoolchildren.

Trump impeachment trial: All you need to know
Democrats lay out abuse of power case
Why is 'pettifogging' suddenly in the news?
The rules call for senators to remain seated during the impeachment trial.

But at least nine Democrats and 22 Republicans left their seats at various times on Thursday, according to Reuters news agency.

They included Democratic White House hopefuls Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar and Michael Bennet.

Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican, defended herself on Thursday after she was spotted reading a book in the chamber.

''NO CRIME NO IMPEACHMENT IS THAT THE RULE"

The Trump impeachment story explained
Trump impeachment - your questions answered
She tweeted that the tome - How Trump Haters Are Breaking America, by Kim Strassel - "provides good insights into today's proceedings".

"Busy mamas are the best at multi-tasking," she added. "Try it."

Mr Risch, a Republican who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was seen this week slumped motionless with his eyes closed at his desk during the hearings.

A spokesman for the Idaho senator denied he had been asleep, telling the Wall Street Journal he was just listening closely "with his eyes closed or cast down".

Mr Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican, was spotted on Wednesday by an NBC reporter appearing to briefly doze off before he was nudged by Senator Todd Young, an Indiana Republican who sits next to him.

Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, was observed leaning on his right arm with his hand covering his eyes for 20 minutes.

On Thursday, Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican, handed out fidget spinners, a children's toy, to fellow senators to help them while away the hours in the chamber.

"I saw somebody grab up a few of them, so they must have some real anxiety going along with this," said Mike Braun, an Indiana Republican. He said he did not require one of the gizmos.

Phones, laptops and tablets are a regular accessory during normal Senate hearings, but all electronics have been banned in the chamber for this trial, leaving many restless.

Pat Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, was heard drawling "my precious" as he retrieved his phone from the cubby outside the chamber.

Some senators have apparently found a way around the strict rules by wearing smart watches.

Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, reportedly worked on a crossword puzzle and made a paper airplane as Democratic prosecutors laid out their case on Wednesday.

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democratic front-runner for the 2020 White House nomination, was spotted by an ABC News reporter playing an unspecified game on paper.

Talking is banned on the floor during arguments and senators are daily admonished by the Senate sergeant-at-arms to remain silent during proceedings "on pain of imprisonment".

But on Wednesday, two Republicans - Tim Scott of South Carolina and Ben Sasse of Nebraska - threw caution to the wind and began whispering after hours of passing notes to each other.

There are also strict rules against food, but senators have been spotted munching chocolate and chewing gum.

Press access to the chamber has been heavily restricted during the Senate trial, meaning there are fewer cameras to catch senators' unguarded moments.

But other senators have appeared to pay close attention to the trial with some diligently taking notes.

Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, was observed scribbling away with what appeared to be a quill pen.

Mr Trump is only the third president ever to be impeached, but he is unlikely to be convicted in a chamber that is controlled by his fellow Republicans.

Before Thursday's arguments began, some Republican senators said they had heard nothing new in Democratic prosecutors' arguments and had already made up their mind to clear the president. A two-thirds majority votes is required to remove Mr Trump from office.

For N30,000, married women, girls engage in ‘immoral act’ in Jos

Videos showing young girls and married women engaging in s*xual acts have rocked Jos, the Plateau State capital. The videos, which were leaked on the internet, have been in circulation across the state for some days.

Daily Trust gathered that following the release and outrage which trailed the videos, one of the women involved committed su***de. The videos involved different girls and women being filmed by a cameraman and a producer/director who initially interviewed them, before stripping them naked and having carnal knowledge of them on camera.

Upon hearing of the videos, our correspondent began digging and gathered that the girls/women were paid N30,000, to be filmed while engaging in the act with a promise to be paid another N100,000 later.

A man simply referred to as Emeka, who lives at the Rayfield area of Jos is said to be behind the videos. It was gathered that he takes the girls/women to a hotel in the same Rayfield to shoot the videos. Emeka, it was gathered has female agents, most of whom he has shot the s*x videos with. He pays each agent N10,000 for anyone they introduce to him, Daily Trust gathered.

It was further learnt that the act has been going on for over three years and that he promised them the videos would not be marketed in Jos/Plateau State or even in the nation, but abroad. But as soon as the videos popped up on a particular website and people began downloading them in Jos, pandemonium broke as many married women and young girls involved were identified.

Upon circulation of the videos, it was gathered that some of those involved could no longer stay in their communities due to stigmatization and other fears. Though the videos were later taken down, the damage had already been done..

Efforts are now being made to rehabilitate some of the women in the videos. Pastor of the Latter house Christian Centre in Jos, Jemimah Mbaya, who has met with some of the girls to counsel them, confirmed in a video on her page that one of the girls actually committed su***de. Though she frowned upon women selling themselves for money, she called on the society not to be hostile to those in the video, but should show them love.

Pastor Mbaya said she would initiate some kind of assistance for the girls, stressing that young women with needs should approach religious centres for help rather than engage in immoral acts.

Meanwhile, our correspondent also tracked two of the women, who spoke to him in confidence. One of them, who confirmed the death of their colleague, said a woman approached her friend at a relaxation joint, and told her that they were looking for women with certain physical attributes to feature in a movie that ‘‘pays well’’.

She said her friend agreed and also invited her to come along. The source said she went with her friend and was also considered. “As soon as we got to the house, Emeka told us that it was their family house and that everything would take place in a hotel. We first went to one hotel in Rayfield, but they did not negotiate well and then we went to another. As soon as we entered he said we should wait for the cameraman. When the cameraman came, he gave my friend N30,000 and gave me the same amount as well.

“The woman who brought us was also given N20,000 for bringing both of us. I waited with the woman who brought us in the bedroom while my friend was doing the video with Emeka in the parlour before it got to my turn. Thereafter we all slept in the hotel because it was in the night, and in the morning, everyone dispersed,” she said. She said the incident took place over a year ago, adding that Emeka promised to give them N100,000 yearly, and also urged them to bring other girls in order to get N10,000 commission for each. She said since the video was released, she has been having issues with her family members, and that her boyfriend has been avoiding her.

The second woman who interacted with our correspondent said hers was about three years ago. She explained that she had a serious financial need and had to solve the problem, which was why she engaged in the act. She said she was assured that the video would not be marketed in the country before she accepted to do it. The woman added that when the video came out, she went to Emeka’s place with her friend to ask why he reneged on his promise not to release it in the country, but that he refused to come out of his room. She said many married women were involved in the act, as well as teenage girls across the city. When contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Tyopev Terna, said they heard rumour of such incident but that no one had come forward to make an official report. He urged those involved not to be ashamed or afraid but should make an official report or talk to him in confidence so that they can investigate and bring the perpetrator (s) to book.

Also speaking, the Chairperson of International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA) Plateau State chapter, Mary Abah Izam, said the act was unacceptable, ‘‘a crime against woman dignity and right, as well as an offence against the nation.’’ Izam said the unfortunate incident was also demonic and that it was an evil act orchestrated to tarnish the image of the state which is known for high morality. She said they will do all they can to make sure that the perpetrator is brought to book and the cartel or syndicate smashed..

She called on the girls/women to look for something tangible through which they can make an honest living instead of engaging in immoral acts. Commenting on the incident also, the Programme Manager for Country Women Association of Nigeria (COWAN) Plateau State branch, Abigail Ishaya, said the incident is devastating and blamed it partly on the home front and poor parental monitoring of their children. The state Commissioner of Information, Dan Manjang, said proper investigation would be conducted into the matter, saying that such acts are strange to the government and people of the state. He said a full-fledged investigation would be carried out and all those found culpable would be brought to book, advising that ladies should be careful in engaging in such act as the full wrath of the law would be brought to bear no matter who is involved. He said no one should go to such extent to earn a living as the government has many empowerment programmes for them, should they make themselves available.

The Commissioner named some of those programmes as; the Plateau State Micro Finance Development Agency, (PLASMIDA), Social Investment programme (SIP) and the N-Power programme.

Man claiming to be Ondo missing child’s abductor remanded

An Ondo State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Akure, on Monday, ordered the remand of a man, Chibuzor Ejike, in a correctional centre for making fraudulent claims.

Ejike was arrested last week in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for claiming to be the abductor of a boy, Gold Kolawole, who went missing on the premises of the Sotitobire Praising Chapel, Akure.

He allegedly sent a text message to the wife of the church’s founder, Mrs Bisola Babatunde, demanding the sum of N800,000 as ransom for the release of Gold.

Gold, who went missing during a service in the church on Sunday, November 10, 2019, has not been found, while the founder of the church, Alfa Babatunde, is standing trial at a magistrates’ court over the boy’s disappearance.

The 39-year-old Ejike was arraigned before the court on three counts of felony, threat and demanding with menace.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Adesegun, the defendant committed the offences on December 14, 2019.

He stated that the offences were contrary to and punishable under sections 509, 406 and 407 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Adesegun prayed the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file.

The counsel for the defendant, Mr Isaac Adubazi, did not oppose the request for adjournment but prayed the court to admit his client to bail in the most liberal terms.

In his ruling, the magistrate, Mr Mayomi Olanipekun, ordered that the defendant should be remanded in the Olokuta Correctional Centre pending legal advice by the Director of Public Prosecutions in the state.

The magistrate adjourned the case till February 20, 2020, for further hearing.
