On this day, Oct 2022, I got beautiful news. Inspiring! A new dawn! Thank God for His existence in our lives.
I didn’t start talking when other children my age typically did. This worried my parents, and I could see it on their faces whenever they recounted the story to me. Their voices carried the weight of that concern each time they reminisced during our family moments together. My mum, with a squint in her eyes and rounded lips—as if she was holding the very word in her mouth—would always tell me that my first word was ‘goal.’ Yes, ‘goal’! The irony that surprised them most was that, to this day, I am not even a fan of football.
Their joy at hearing my first word soon gave way to a new worry. I had become a stammerer, and that struggle often made me frustrated and quick-tempered. I would get agitated when I couldn’t express myself, especially in situations where I felt wronged. Before I could get a sentence out, I would stammer for what felt like minutes. I still remember the teasing chants of ‘mo mo mo mo momimi’ whenever I tried to call my mum. Friends and older boys would laugh, making me the target of their jokes.
But with time, I began to find my voice. I started to form my sentences without pausing, stringing words together smoothly. When I felt the familiar urge to stammer, I learned to stay calm. Relaxed! Composed! Smiled!. Years after those difficult struggles, I emerged as someone who could confidently express himself.
Today, I am an orator, a communicator, and a teacher. The boy who couldn’t speak until he was five has now taught and addressed thousands of people through both speech and writing. Never give up on anyone!
I celebrate myself and every person who has grown through the challenges life presents.
Happy Teachers’ Day!

We were born and bred in a city where the moon shines from, for us to shine, and so we are from Moonshine ( Mushin) . Our orientation still remains intact regardless of our status. Gaza!

Deviation in Stylistics
The language which is the tool of communication is employed by a speaker addressing his audience in clubs, schools, market places, offices, etc. is the same language employed by a poet, playwright or novelist. However, the language of poetry becomes known when some syntactic rules or norms are not adhered to. Poetic language becomes poetic with its aesthetic and other non-linguistic adherence. As posited by Shafii-Kadkani (1989), “poetry is nothing but breaking the norms of ordinary and logical language.” This is language deviation in stylistics. Students of literature are to be aware of this language deviation as the aesthetic of any literary works depends on it. This makes the critiquing of a work accessible and appealing.
Deviation in stylistics may occur at different levels of language such as graphological level, syntactic level and lexico-semantic level. An understanding of these levels of language is important for anyone who is interested in appreciating works of arts, poetry especially.
At the graphological level, for example, we may find the use of capital or small letters where not necessary or the use of some punctuation marks in certain places where they do not fit in.
The syntactic level looks at the order of words in a sentence. For the sake of aesthetic or deviation in stylistics, the subject of a sentence may be found in the adjunct space and vice versa. For example, the dialogue from Kent in Shakespeare’s King Lear
Where learned you this, fool?
The above dialogue doesn’t follow the proper arrangement of sentence order which should be arranged as:
Where did you learn this, fool?
At the lexico-semantic levels, writers experiment with words to create effects. In this sense, they combine words that ordinarily should not be used together in sentences. For example, “a virgin land of futility’, sweet bitter experience’, etc. are examples of expressions that do not follow the proper norms of lexico-semantic levels of language.
Going by this submission, it is imperative for learners to get acquainted with some deviation styles used by writers as doing this will afford them the tool they need to access works of arts that originally seem difficult to them.
* Jokes apart, the women actually called to ask about the fee.
A lot of idioms are fixed, so fixed that altering them would render them non-standard. Every culture has its idioms that should not be altered except the idiom itself gives room for such, and it is grammatically acceptable. Therefore, the above sentence is marred by the use of ‘Jokes’. When corrected, the above sentence will be:
* Joking apart, the women actually called to ask about the fee.
It is also correct to say joking aside.
