The Loss of a Parent

Losing a parent is one of life’s most difficult experiences, regardless of their age or circumstances.

A year ago today, I received a phone call that forever changed my life. The heartbreaking news came—my Dad had passed away. In that moment, everything else faded into insignificance. Though he was 86 and had been battling cancer, I still wasn’t prepared to lose him. He was my Dad, and I thought we had more time—more moments to share, more stories to create.

Time is precious, beyond our control, and fleeting. Every second truly matters.

To every child still blessed to have their parents or a parent who has loved and tried their best for you: cherish them. Spend time with them. Love them deeply and intentionally. Don’t wait. Life is fragile, and death is inevitable.

To every parent: you have been entrusted with the most sacred gift and responsibility—to raise and shape another human being. It isn’t easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is. Be present. Show up, even in the difficult moments. Let your children know how much they are loved and valued. Teach them about life, faith, and compassion.

Parenting is a divine gift, given without prerequisites or qualifications. Don't waste it. Invest your time and love wisely, for your children will be the ones who stand by you in your later years. Life has a way of returning what you give—more often than not, you reap what you sow.

The greatest lesson I learned from my father is simple: Love. Love with all your heart.

Rest in peace, Daddy. You are deeply missed and forever cherished.
