The notion of a Southern Traditional Rulers Council with the Oni of Ife as permanent Chairman appears impractical. Notably, Eze Aro ought to be well-informed on this matter.
We unequivocally stand in support of HRM Igwe Agubuzo's sentiments.
The proposed amalgamation seems unnecessary. Several questions arise regarding the purpose and functionality of the southern traditional royal council, particularly in managing diverse traditions and cultures under one umbrella. Should the chairmanship not ideally be determined by tenure or age? The rationale behind selecting a permanent chairman is unclear.
The concept of a unified Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council is questionable due to the distinct cultures and traditions across the region, which may render it ineffective. Unlike the north, the south's heterogeneity might make such a council unfeasible without a rotational chairmanship.
If the Ooni is to hold the position permanently, it would imply the subjugation of other southern regions to the southwest. Eze Aro, His Eminence Eberechukwu Oji, should not acquiesce to such terms. HRH Igwe Amb. Lawrence Agubuzu's rejection of the council seems justified.
