The biggest mistake that kept me stuck as a brand specialistโ€ฆ

I thought my brand had to be โ€œfor everyone.โ€
So I tried to design in every style.

I watered down my message so nobody felt left out.

WIP ๐Ÿ”ฅ

You know that feeling when a client has tried multiple designs elsewhere, gotten frustrated, and is almost giving up hope? Yeahโ€ฆ that was the case here.

He told me: โ€œIโ€™ve seen different versions, none felt right.โ€
And honestly, I love situations like that -- because it pushes me to dig deeper.

So I did what I always do: research. I donโ€™t just open CorelDRAW or Illustrator and start dragging shapes. I study. I ask:
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ What does the brand stand for?
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ What emotions should it give off?
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ How do we make it memorable?

Thatโ€™s how the icon came alive -- a blend of a house silhouette and a shield form.

Haven = home + protection. Simple, but powerful.

The color choice wasnโ€™t random either. Green = growth, stability, wealth. Yellow = warmth, optimism, light. Put them together, and you get a brand that feels safe but also welcoming.

And the best part? First draft. He loved it immediately. No back and forth. No โ€œhmm, can you tweak this?โ€ -- just: โ€œYes, this is it.โ€

For me, thatโ€™s the win. Not just making a โ€œfine logo,โ€ but crafting something that actually feels like the brand.

In every corner of Lagos, youโ€™ll find local mallam stalls and neighborhood kiosks.

They sell essentials - rice, oil, bread, soap, brush, snacks - but if you look closely, youโ€™ll notice one thing: no clear name, no colors, no signage, no consistency.

One day itโ€™s โ€œAbu Provision,โ€ tomorrow itโ€™s โ€œBlessing Stores,โ€ next month itโ€™s painted over by a cousinโ€™s football jersey design.

Now enter Bokku Mart - a brand that, just three years ago, was another neighborhood grocery store.

But they made one smart decision: ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜†.

Suddenly, Bokku wasnโ€™t just another roadside grocery store, they became trusted. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ฏ

Locals who might skip Shoprite or SPAR because of distance or pricing saw Bokku as a closer, familiar alternative, with the same reliability. โ˜บ๏ธ

They werenโ€™t the cheapest; they werenโ€™t the biggest; but they were consistent, and that won hearts and wallets fast. ๐Ÿฅ‡

Most local retailers in Nigeria make the dangerous branding mistake of thinking, โ€œItโ€™s just a shop, I donโ€™t need a brand.โ€
But a scattered, inconsistent look confuses customers and kills loyalty.

A few months before the Grama Conference 5.0, I got the opportunity to lead the entire brand design for the event. From that moment, I knew I wanted to do more than just create beautiful designs - I wanted to craft an experience people would remember โ˜บ๏ธ .

I started by designing everything the conference would need - from the event backdrop and photostand banners to the customised tags for participants, panellists, facilitators, the host, keynote speaker, and the entire CX team. Every detail mattered, and I poured my heart into making sure the visuals reflected the energy, professionalism, and vision of the event.

As the conference drew closer โณ, my involvement deepened. I wasnโ€™t just thinking like a designer anymore - I was thinking like a partner in its success ๐Ÿค.

In the weeks leading up to the event, I worked closely with the organisers to make sure all designs were printed, delivered, and set up perfectly โœ….

Even in the final days, I was fine-tuning the slides and polishing the event deck that would later run live on-screen ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ.

On the day of the event ๐ŸŒŸ, I wasn't just relaxed. Wherever I saw a need, I stepped in - because thatโ€™s who I am: someone who takes initiative, solves problems, and gives everything to the task ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ.

At the end of the day, I was honoured with an award ๐Ÿ† for my contribution to the success of the conference. That moment touched me deeply - not just because of the recognition, but because it reminded me why I love what I do so much๐Ÿฅน .

Since then, Iโ€™ve had potential clients reach out after seeing the work I did, opening up new doors and new opportunities ๐Ÿš€. And honestly? Iโ€™m just getting started. ๐Ÿ’ช
