Art，Migration，Remembrance: Echoes of Loss and Longing for Families of Missing Migrants
When a migrant’s journey comes to an abrupt end, what remains is not just cold statistics, but endless longing and grief. In collaboration with renowned Nigerian artist , IOM brings these unheard voices to life through images, sound, and virtual reality (VR) in the exhibition “We Speak Their Names in Hushed Tones”, ensuring that their stories are heard.
Edo State in southern is often called the “corridor” to Europe. Many Nigerian migrants embark on their journeys from its capital, Benin City—some in search of a better life, others unknowingly stepping into tragedy. For countless families, these journeys end in heartbreak, leaving them with pain. “Data informs, but stories touch the heart,” says Osakpolor. Through art, he hopes to ensure that the families of missing are not forgotten and that every name behind the statistics is remembered.
The exhibition is now open to the public at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub and will run until April 1, 2025. Join us in listening to their voices.
