From simple uses of sunlight in ancient times to advanced solar panels powering cities, the history of solar energy reflects humanity’s ongoing effort to harness one of Earth’s most abundant natural resources.
The scientific understanding of solar energy began to take shape in the 19th century. In 1839, French physicist Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect, the process by which sunlight can be converted directly into electricity. Later, in 1876, William Grylls Adams and his student demonstrated that selenium could generate electricity when exposed to light, though the efficiency was very low.
A major breakthrough came in 1954 when scientists at Bell Labs developed the first practical silicon solar cell. This invention marked the beginning of modern solar technology, with early applications in powering satellites during the space race.
