A LETTER TO MYSELF
5 YEARS POST-GRADUATION

Five years ago, I walked out of the School of Nursing with more than a certificate as a Registered Nurse; I carried courage, discipline, and a quiet determination to rise, no matter the odds. The journey was not easy. There were moments of exhaustion, self-doubt, and sacrifice, yet I stayed focused. I showed up even when it was hard. I chose resilience over excuses and growth over comfort.

Today, I stand as a Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife, Registered Public Health Nurse, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) holder, actively working in a Health Care Institution, where competence, empathy, dedication, vigilance, and compassion are required daily. I have grown from a student striving to pass exams into a professional trusted with lives, decisions, and critical care. Each shift has strengthened my confidence, sharpened my clinical judgment & leadership and deepened my commitment to excellence.

I am proud of how far I’ve come; not just for graduating, but for continuously pushing myself to learn, expand my skills, and create impact beyond the bedside through health education and service. I honour the sacrifices, the long hours, and the silent perseverance that brought me here.

This milestone reminds me that focus, consistency, and faith truly pay off. I am still becoming, still growing, and still rising, and I am proud of the professional I am today.

Above all, I return all glory to God, the Author and Finisher of my journey. In moments of strength and in seasons of weakness, He remained faithful. When the path was unclear and the load felt heavy, His grace carried me through. Every achievement, every open door, and every step forward is a testimony of His mercy and guidance.

I am grateful for the wisdom, protection, and favour that have sustained me thus far. As I step into the future, I trust God to order my steps, enlarge my capacity, and use my hands, mind, and heart to bless lives. With Him leading, the journey ahead is secure, purposeful, and filled with hope.

With love, gratitude, and admiration,

Registered Nurse
Registered Midwife
Registered Public Health Nurse

In no particular order........
OH LORD, I'M THANKFUL AND GRATEFUL 🙌🙌🙌

When I first came across those posts, I froze. There were many of them but this particular one caught my attention. I read it twice, hoping I had misunderstood, but the words were clear, deeply disturbing, and left me speechless. The sharp shock sank into my chest, making me wonder how such harmful conversations about children could exist so casually online.

As a nurse, mother, and child advocate, it saddened me to see how vulnerable our girls still are in a world where they should be safe, protected, and respected. No child should ever be spoken about like that; not in jest, not in passing, not ever!

That moment reminded me why conversations around child protection must never go silent.
Behind every harmful post is a mindset that endangers real children in real life. When society laughs, minimizes, or ignores these red flags, we create an environment where predators feel comfortable and girls feel unprotected. As Parents, adults, caregivers, and community members, it is our responsibility to challenge these attitudes, educate others, and defend the dignity of every child, especially the girl child, who remains one of the most vulnerable groups in our society.

PROTECT THE GIRL CHILD TODAY!
As a healthcare professional, I see every day how vulnerable girls are; not just physically, but emotionally, mentally, and socially.
Recently, some online content reminded me of a bitter truth: too many people still see the girl child through the wrong lens.

Some hide harmful thoughts behind “jokes,” use minors for shock value, or speak carelessly as if a child’s dignity is something to play with.

Let me be clear as Nurse Rita:
🚫 A girl child is never a joke
🚫 A girl child is never an option for adult conversations
🚫 A girl child is never to be se.xua.lized, even in the name of humour

These are not harmless comments, they are warning signs of a mindset that puts children at risk. We must not remain silent!

WHY THIS MATTERS: FROM NURSE’S PERSPECTIVE

I work with women, mothers, and young girls, and I have seen the long-term effects of abuse and exploitation:

- Trauma that doesn’t heal easily
- Self-esteem shattered too early
- Silence caused by shame
- Futures damaged by experiences they never asked for

Many survivors say the same thing:
"The world saw the red flags… but no one spoke up."

This is why awareness is powerful.
This is why education is necessary.
This is why your voice matters.

SOCIETITAL RESPONSIBILITIES

- Children, especially girls, deserve to grow in safety, respect, and innocence.

- Harmful “jokes” about minors are not jokes, they are dangerous signals.

- Every adult has a responsibility to challenge such behaviour.

- Protecting the girl child is not a trend; it is a duty.

Every time we ignore inappropriate comments, we strengthen a culture that excuses abuse.
Every time we speak out, we weaken that culture.

ACTIONS STEPS FOR PARENTS, GUARDIANS & YOUTH

- Pay attention to what people say around children
- Teach children about body boundaries early
- Report suspicious behaviour immediately
- Don’t normalize toxic humour at the expense of minors
-Create safe spaces for girls to speak up

OUR GIRL CHILDREN DESERVE A WORLD WHERE:
- Their bodies are respected
- Their innocence is protected
- Their voices are heard
- Their safety is non-negotiable

Together, we can build that world.
Let’s stand for our girls. Let’s protect their future.

I am Nurse Rita, and I stand for every girl child. Do you?
