Author Chimamanda Adichie Accuses Lagos Hospital of Negligence in Son's Death
World-renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has issued a powerful and deeply personal statement, accusing a Lagos hospital of negligence that she believes led to the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu.
In a detailed account shared with family and friends, Adichie stated, "My son would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th." The author revealed that Nkanu had developed a serious infection while the family was in Lagos for Christmas. After initial care at Atlantis Hospital, he was referred to Euracare for advanced procedures—a lumbar puncture and the insertion of a 'central line'—in preparation for an emergency medical evacuation to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States on January 7th.
According to Adichie's statement, the tragedy unfolded during sedation for an MRI. She recalls seeing staff rush into the theater and being informed by a doctor that her son had been given "too much propofol" by the anesthesiologist, causing him to become unresponsive. Despite being resuscitated, Nkanu was placed on a ventilator in the ICU, suffered seizures and cardiac arrest, and passed away hours later.
This account directly contradicts an earlier family statement that cited a brief illness as the cause of death. Adichie's latest testimony paints a harrowing picture of alleged medical error, stating that these catastrophic events "had never happened before" during her son's treatment.

Sheikh Gumi Alleges Abuja Security Sources Listed Him for Elimination
Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has made the serious claim that sources within Nigeria's security apparatus in Abuja informed him his name was listed for elimination alongside Boko Haram terrorists.
Gumi stated he received an early morning phone call from an unidentified source claiming his name was mentioned during a national security meeting. "They said I have been marked; that I will be eliminated," Gumi reported. "Even American, they said they came to fight terrorists, so who are the terrorists? They are the ones."
He leveled the blame for Boko Haram's emergence at the United States. "They are the ones doing it Boko Haram," he alleged, also criticizing former U.S. President Donald Trump's policies for worsening Nigeria's security and social divisions.
Gumi accused foreign-backed narratives of falsely framing Christians as the sole victims and criticized Nigerian elites and scholars for their silence. He argued that no sovereign nation would accept foreign interference designed to divide its people.
Warning that inaction is harming the country, Gumi concluded, "You brought us hardship... This is the kind of situation we are in. It is dragging the country down."

Venezuelans Worldwide Celebrate Capture of President Maduro by U.S. Forces
Venezuelans across the globe are celebrating the capture of President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces, with jubilant crowds gathering in cities from Latin America to Europe and the United States.
The capture of Maduro, who faces drug and weapons charges in the U.S., has sparked widespread joy among a diaspora of over eight million people who fled years of economic collapse, violence, and shortages under his rule. Many expressed hope for a new beginning, describing the moment as the fall of a dictatorship.
One celebrant in Chile stated, "We are free and happy that the dictatorship has fallen and that we will have a free country." In Doral, Florida, another Venezuelan said the event brought justice for those forced to leave, adding a desire to return home and rebuild.
The operation, which involved explosions and military activity in Caracas in the early hours of Saturday, was described by U.S. President Donald Trump as a "brilliant operation" carried out by elite troops. The capture marks a dramatic turn for a nation with the world's largest oil reserves but plagued by a severe humanitarian and political crisis.

Driver Reveals Anthony Joshua Switched Seats Before Fatal Crash, Blames Brake Failure
A new report reveals boxer Anthony Joshua moved from the front to the back seat of his SUV moments before a fatal crash in Nigeria, narrowly escaping more serious injury. The accident claimed the lives of two of his friends, Sani Ghami and Latif Adeyole.
Joshua's driver, Kayode Adeniyi, pleaded not guilty to charges of dangerous driving in court, attributing the crash to a sudden brake failure. According to the driver's lawyer, Joshua was asked to move to the back seat because his size blocked the driver's view of the wing mirror. A friend then took the front passenger seat, which sustained the most severe impact.
Adeniyi, who has worked as Joshua's driver for over three years, was granted bail. Outside court, his family expressed deep distress over the tragedy. His son stated the family is "very upset" and extended condolences for the loss of life, maintaining his father's innocence and describing the event as a tragic accident.

China Ends Tax Exemption on Contraceptives to Combat Population Decline
China has implemented a new 13% tax on condoms and other contraceptives, ending a 30-year tax exemption policy. The measure, effective from January 1, aims to address the country's falling birth rate following three consecutive years of population decline since 2024.
This policy shift is part of a broader national effort to encourage childbirth and sustain economic growth, reversing decades of strict population control. In addition to the new tax, the government has introduced subsidies and expanded healthcare coverage to support families. Key initiatives include a 90 billion yuan ($12.7 billion) childcare program and an annual 3,600 yuan subsidy for each child under three in 2025.

Media Personality Claims Relationships Last Longer Without Financial Gifts to Women
Media personality GehGeh has sparked debate with remarks on how financial dynamics affect relationships. During a live stream with Carter Efe, he stated, "When you don’t give a woman money, the relationship tends to last longer," arguing that relationships are more valued when both partners invest effort.
GehGeh suggested that when a man bears all the financial spending, it can make it easier for the woman to leave, as she has less personal investment in the partnership. He framed his view as an observation on human behavior, not a criticism of women, stating, "human beings value what they suffer for."
His comments have generated mixed reactions online. Some agree that mutual sacrifice strengthens commitment, while others contend that reducing relationships to financial investment oversimplifies love and partnership.
