In exploring the topic of black joy, I didn’t just want to show images of people smiling but, I wanted to encapsulate truly joyous moments. This is a picture of a friend of mine; a few days before his wedding, he and his bride wanted to do a different take on the usual wedding photo. I feel that this is black joy. Even though there are no smiles, it is a moment that I believe should be celebrated.

I remember shooting this day, going back to my laptop and smiling. There’s no better feeling than having a moment tell a better story than you even intended. This for me is one of my favourite shots ever done. This is black Joy.
