🥟 HOW TO MAKE MEAT PIE (STEP BY STEP)

🧂 INGREDIENTS

🍴 Ingredients
For the dough:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
250g (1 cup) cold butter or margarine (cubed)
½ tsp salt
½ cup cold water

For the filling:
500g (1 lb) ground beef
2 medium Irish potatoes (peeled and diced)
1 medium carrot (peeled and diced)
1 small onion (chopped)
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tsp curry powder
1 tsp thyme
1 seasoning cube (or to taste)
Salt & pepper to taste
1 tbsp flour (for thickening)
¼ cup water

For sealing and brushing:
1 egg (beaten)

🔪 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Make the Dough
In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder.

Add cold butter/margarine. Rub with your fingers until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs.

Gradually add cold water and knead lightly into a soft, non-sticky dough.

Wrap in plastic or cover, and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the Filling
Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent.

Add minced meat and stir until browned and no longer pink.

Add diced carrots and potatoes. Stir well.

Season with curry, thyme, seasoning cube, salt, and pepper.

Add ¼ cup water. Cover and simmer for about 10 minutes until vegetables are tender.

Sprinkle 1 tbsp flour over the filling and stir to thicken.

Allow to cool completely before using.

Step 3: Assemble the Meat Pies
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).

Roll out dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness.

Cut into circles using a meat pie cutter or small bowl.

Place 1-2 tablespoons of filling on one side of the circle.

Brush edges with beaten egg, fold over to make a half-moon shape, and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.

Step 4: Bake the Meat Pies
Place meat pies on a greased or parchment-lined baking tray.

Brush the tops with beaten egg for a golden finish.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown.

✅ Tips
Don’t overfill your pies, or they might burst while baking.
Let the filling cool completely before assembling.
You can freeze unbaked meat pies and bake them fresh later!
