Chapter 2: Nowhere To Run

~ JESSICA ~

A kn**e. He was holding a kn**e.

My breath hitched in my throat as I took in the sharp blade gleaming in the man's hand. I tore my gaze from his hands and settled it on his face, only to realize that his cold eyes weren't fixed on my face but on my stomach. Fear gripped me, and I instinctively placed my hands protectively over my belly. The smirk that curled on his lips sent a chill down my spine, and I je**ed when he took a step toward me.

"Who are you? What do you want?" I stammered, my voice trembling against my will. I didn't want to sound scared to this stranger, but my pounding heart betrayed my intentions. I took a cautious step back, desperate to put some distance between us. But he continued to advance, and I couldn't help but notice the dangerous glint in his eyes.

For some f***ed-up reason, this situation was exciting him.

I had to act quickly. Survival instincts kicking in, I tried to slam the door shut, but he was too fast, too strong. His powerful shove sent me stumbling back into the house. Scrambling to my feet, I dashed toward the bedroom, adrenaline surging through my veins as I did.

My only thought was to get away, to find someplace safe so I could protect my baby.

The sound of his footsteps pounding behind me spurred me to run even faster. I burst into the bedroom, frantically trying to shut the door behind me. But he was right on my heels. With a swift kick, he sent the door crashing open. I let out a scream as I fell backward onto the bed.

I had to fight. I had to survive. So, as he lunged at me, I grabbed a nearby lamp and swung it at him with all my strength. The lamp shattered against his head, and he staggered back, bl**d trickling down his face. But the pain seemed only to fuel his rage.

I scrambled off the bed, trying to make a break for the door. But he was too quick. He grabbed me by the hair and yanked me back, causing me to cry out in pain. Desperation gave me strength as I clawed at his face, managing to scratch him across the cheek. He roared in anger and threw me to the floor.

Gasping for breath, I kicked out at him, catching him in the shin. He stumbled, giving me a brief moment of hope, and I tried to crawl away, but he grabbed my ankle and yanked me back. I twisted around, my fingers finding the edge of the bed frame, and with a surge of effort, I pulled myself up and kicked him square in the chest.

He flew back, crashing into the dresser. I made a dash for the door, but p**n exploded in my leg as his kn**e sliced into my thigh. I screamed in ag**y, collapsing to the floor. The world spun around me, and I gasped as p**n blurred my vision.

Then I felt his hand grip my arm, and I tried to struggle, but my body was too weak.

"No, please," I begged, my voice barely more than a whisper. "Why are you doing this?"

He didn't answer. The last thing I saw before darkness claimed me was his cold, unfeeling eyes staring down at me and his kn**e raised above his head.

---

I woke up in a place that reeked of dampness and decay, the air around me feeling cold and stale. My head throbbed with p**n as I forced my eyes open, and then they widened when I saw my surroundings. The walls were lined with rusting metal sheets, and the deem light in the room came from a single bulb hanging from the ceiling, casting eerie shadows around. I was lying on a dirty mattress on the floor, and my nose crunched when I realized it was surrounded by piles of discarded junk and debris.

I looked down at myself and groaned. My left thigh was throbbing with p**n, and I could feel something like a bandage wrapped around my wound, barely holding back the bleeding. My clothes were torn and stained with bl**d, and my entire body ached from the earlier struggle. But despite the physical ag**y, my mind was alert. Fear was coursing through me, but I forced myself to stay calm and observe my surroundings. Every detail could be crucial if I found a way to escape.

I noted the rusted metal door, the only exit from the room. There were no windows, and the walls were lined with graffiti and old posters. The floor was littered with broken glass and scraps of metal, making it difficult to move without making noise. I strained to hear any sounds from outside, my heart pounding in my chest.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps approaching. The door creaked open, and the intruder who had kidnapped me stepped inside. A moment later, the room was flooded with harsh light, blinding me temporarily. It took a minute, but my eyes adjusted, and I saw him clearly for the first time.

He looked familiar, but I couldn't place where I had seen him before. He had a rugged, dangerous look, with dark hair slicked back and a scruffy beard. His eyes were cold and piercing, and his lips curled into a cruel smile. He wore a black leather jacket over a dark shirt and jeans, giving him an intimidating, almost menacing appearance. Just like the first time I saw him.

He moved towards me, and that was when I noticed the tray in his hands. He set it down roughly on a makeshift table near the mattress before commanding, "Eat."

I shook my head, ignoring the growling hunger in my stomach.

How long have I been out again?

"What am I doing here? Why did you kidnap me? What do you want?" I demanded in a determined tone, although in truth, I was trembling inside.

He chuckled darkly, and the sound that sent chills down my spine. "You'll find out soon enough," he said, his eyes glinting with something akin to amusement.

Refusing to let him intimidate me, I asked, "Who are you? Why are you doing this?"

His expression hardened, and he took a step toward me. "You really want to know?" he snarled. "Your husband, Harrison, is the one who asked me to take you. To t**ture you. And then, to k**l you. But that would be after I have had my fun with you."

I stared at him in shock, unable to comprehend his words. "No... that can't be true. Harrison would never—"

He cut me off with a harsh laugh. "Oh, but he would. Harrison's been playing you, Jessica. He found out about your little visits to Dr. Johnson. He thinks you're having an affair. He doesn't love you. Never did. He just wanted to keep you around until he could get rid of you. And now that Edward Williams is dead, he can."

My mind reeled, trying to process what he was saying. "You're lying," I whispered, shaking my head. "Harrison would never do that. He is angry right now because he doesn't know the truth, but he will never do this to me."

The man sneered. "Think about it, Jessica. He accused you of being a gold-digger, didn't he? He had you followed. He knew about your visits to the doctor. He doesn't trust you. And when he found out you were pregnant, he decided it was the perfect time to get rid of you and the baby."

His words hit me like a punch to the gut. Harrison already knows about the pregnancy?

Then I remembered our fight earlier... his cold demeanor... the accusations... it all seemed to fit. But no, it couldn't be true. I couldn't believe it.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at the man before me. "Why are you doing this? Who are you?"

He leaned in close, his breath hot against my face. "Let's just say I'm a friend of your husband. And I'm here to make sure you and that baby never see the light of day again."

I felt a surge of t**ror and disbelief. How had my life come to this? How had everything spiraled out of control so quickly?

He straightened up and walked toward the door. "You better eat," he said, his voice dripping with m**ace. "It might be the last meal you and your baby get."

With that, he stepped out of the room, slamming the door shut behind him. I was left alone, the light bulb swinging slightly from the force of the door, casting shifting shadows across the room. I hugged my knees to my chest, feeling utterly devastated and shell-shocked.

My mind raced, trying to make sense of everything. Had Harrison really done this to me? The man’s words echoed in my mind, and despite my disbelief, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was some truth to them. Harrison's behavior, his accusations, the sudden change in our relationship—it all pointed to something dark and sinister.

Tears streamed down my face as I rocked back and forth, trying to comfort myself. I had to stay strong. I had to find a way out of this nightmare. For my sake and for my baby’s. But the reality of my situation was crushing, and I felt a deep sense of betrayal and hopelessness.

How could Harrison do this to me? To us?

As the weight of my situation pressed down on me, I knew I had two choices: give up hope or wait and hope for a miracle.

Chapter 1: Shattered Dreams

~ JESSICA ~

I couldn't contain my excitement as I walked out of the doctor's office, clutching the pregnancy report in my hand. I was finally going to be a mother! Dr. Johnson's words echoed in my mind: "Take care of yourself, eat properly, and bring your husband to your next appointment."

My husband was going to go bunkers with this news. I couldn't wait to share the news with him. I hurried home, my mind racing with visions of nursery decorations, baby clothes, and everything I had dreamed of since I was a teen.

Climbing into my sleek red car, I began the drive home, my mind imagining the adorable face of our future child. Would it be a girl or a boy? I knew Harrison would be thrilled to hear this news; he would give me anything I asked for. The thought gave me goosebumps.

Once home, I decided to prepare dinner. As I cooked, my heart overflowed with joy and love. I couldn't remember the last time I had been this happy since Grandpa Edwards passed away.

Just as I was about to serve the food, my phone buzzed with a notification from an unknown number. I peeped at it and found out it was a popular blog post. I hesitated for a moment, thinking I didn't have the time to check posts online when my husband would soon be back from his business trip in LA, but then something caught my eye, and I decided to open it. The moment I did, I wished I had followed my guts and ignored the message. I dropped the cooking spoon I was holding and sank into the kitchen chair beside me as I swiped through the post.

They were pictures. Pictures of Harrison, my husband, in a hotel room with another woman. In the photographs, Harrison was fast asleep, naked with his belly to the bed and his back to the camera, but his face was tilted in a way that I could just make out his features. A slim, petite woman lay next to him, smiling, her long brown hair flowing around her naked body as she kissed his head. The images hit me like a punch to the gut, leaving me breathless and in disbelief.

I couldn't believe my eyes. This post was currently trending, with about one million likes already.

What the hell?

"What is happening?" I couldn't help but whisper to myself as my phone started ringing. The moment I saw my mother-in-law's name flash on the screen, I knew it had to be true. Without thinking, my fingers tapped the answer button.

"Have you seen the news?" Mary, my mother-in-law, asked, her voice calm and matter-of-fact.

"Did you send this to me?" I asked in return, ignoring her question.

"Well, I wanted to do the honors of showing it to you before someone else did—" I ended the call before she could say more.

I rose from the chair and slid down the kitchen counter, unable to hold myself up or sit still. My world was shattering, and I didn't know the cause.

I needed an explanation.

Harrison and I were on good terms. There was no way he would just do this to me without an explanation. I knew my husband. He wasn't a man to act without reason.

I would not freak out. I wasn't going to. There was no need to react without an explanation. I would give him the benefit of the doubt and hear him out.

I sat in our big foyer and awaited his arrival. An hour later, I heard the sound of his car parking outside. My heart beating frantically beneath my chest, I walked towards the doorway as Harrison entered the house.

Naturally, one would think I should be brimming with anger at this moment, but Harrison and I did not start as a love match. We both knew what we were getting into when we agreed to go along with Grandpa Edwards' proposal to get married. At first, I had thought it wouldn't work out, but Harrison assured me we could make it work. His kindness and niceness towards me made me fall in love with him. Honestly, I had thought everything was going well until an hour ago.

I needed him to make me understand what suddenly changed.

"Hello, honey," I greeted as he closed the door, pulling his suitcase beside him. "How was your trip?"

"Fine," he grunted and started heading towards the staircase, not even sparing me a glance.

"Harrison," I called, and he halted, his back to me.
"There's something we need to address, dear.

He turned slowly, and then, after a few seconds or so, he pined me with his gaze. Something flashed across his eyes. A hint of guilt, maybe, but then it was quickly masked with an unusual arrogance. "What's this about, Jess?"

My gaze narrowed, but then, instead of pointing out his nonchalance, I decided to rip the bandage off. Holding my phone to his eye level, I asked, "These pictures. Care to explain?"

Harrison shrugged, his eyes avoiding mine. "The picture is a misunderstanding, Jess. It meant nothing."

I felt a surge of anger at his words. "A misunderstanding? You call cheating on me a misunderstanding? How did you misunderstand your way into her bed? I thought you cared for me. Why would you do this?"

He sighed, his expression unrepentant. "Look, Jess, let's be real. You and I both know you married me for my family's wealth and status. I'm not expecting you to be hurt by this. It's just a reality check."

My eyes widened in disbelief. "What? Are you saying I'm just a gold-digger, and I shouldn't care about your infidelity?"

Harrison nodded, his voice cold. "That's right, Jess. I've been investigating you for two weeks now. Do you think I don't know you've been going to the hospital to see Dr. Johnson every day for the past month when you are not sick? I know both of you are having an affair. I have pictures that show you both holding hands and even going on dates! It is clear you're not in love with me, and I'm not in love with you. I know the only reason you married me was to please Grandpa Edwards."

I felt a sting from his words, but what I felt more was shock. Where did he get all this information from? Yes, I've indeed been seeing Dr. Johnson more frequently for a month, but it was not for the reasons he was portraying right now. "Where on earth did you get this information from, Harrison? Because it's not true. I—"

"Save your lies for someone else, Jess. I don't care. I never loved you anyway. You are free to do what you want, and I can do what I want."

I shook my head, refusing to back down. "Who investigated me, Harrison?"

His silence was all I needed to know. "Don't tell me you asked Detective Derrick to investigate me when you know he is loyal to your mother!"

"And so? If he is loyal to Mary, how does that relate?"

"It relates because she hates me!"

Harrison scoffed. "Oh please, not this again. Get over it! My mother not liking you doesn't mean she will lie against you. If this is how you want to prove your innocence, then I'm sorry, I don't have the time for it."

"Harrison, please, if you love me—"

"Well, I don't," he snapped, cutting me short. "I'm sorry, Jessica, but I don't love you. Don't make an issue out of this. I just got home, and I need to rest," he said, shoving his way upstairs to our room.

I followed Harrison into the room, my heart still heavy with disbelief. I couldn't believe he just said that. "Look into my eyes and tell me you don't love me, Harrison."

He shook his head, his eyes cold and distant as he said, "Jessica, I don't love you. I've just been pretending to be the perfect husband to make Grandpa Edward happy and get what I want. I hope you can leave me alone now."

I froze, my eyes wide as I stared up at him.

Today was supposed to be a good day. It was supposed to be the start of something perfect between us, but right now, it all felt like I’d been living a lie. All the moments we shared, the laughter, the apologies, the promises... were they all just an act? His accusations of me were too far-fetched for me to believe that was his real reason for cheating. What if he made it up to have an excuse to leave me? What if he'd been planning this all along?

No. Harrison could not betray me like that. He wasn't that kind of man. My husband was a good man.

Watching him pull off his suit jacket, I said, "How can you say such hurtful things to me, Harrison? After everything we've shared? Tell me this is all a joke. Tell me you are not using a flimsy accusation to get away with cheating on me," I asked, my voice shaking.

Harrison turned to me angrily, his nostrils flaring as he growled, "Woman! Since you've decided not to let me be, I will leave this house for you." With that said, he picked up his car keys, turned, and walked out of the bedroom in his white shirt and suit pants, leaving me feeling hurt, devastated, and confused.

I couldn't believe the man I thought I knew, the man I thought could do anything for me, could say such hurtful things to me. I didn't know what to do or how to feel. All I knew was that I needed answers, and I needed them now.

Jerking myself out of my frozen state, I ran out of the bedroom, down the stairs, and after my husband. I'd heard the foyer door slam shut a while ago, but I ran towards the door anyway. Maybe he had not yet left. Maybe he was still outside. Maybe he was just sitting in his car, trying to get away from me.

Whatever it was, I needed to talk to him and make this right now. I needed to tell him about our baby.

I swung the door open, hoping to see Harrison standing outside his car in the driveway, but instead, I found a stranger on my doorstep, his eyes cold and menacing, with something sharp glinting in his hand.

My breath caught in my throat when I realized he was holding the sharpest kn*fe I'd ever seen.

THE SEVEN KEY ELEMENTS OF A STORY | PART 4

Hey there! Today, we'll move on to the next element of storytelling - theme. So, what does THEME mean in a story?

Well, think of theme as the "why" behind a story that adds depth and meaning to it. It's the underlying message or big idea that the story revolves around. So, why are you writing your story, and what message are you trying to convey?

Themes can be anything from good versus evil, coming of age, love, courage, redemption, to social criticisms on class, race, gender, or religion. Sometimes, themes can also be warnings, such as the dangers of seeking revenge or the effects of war.

Here are some real examples from some famous authors' books to help you understand themes better:

1. "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee - Theme: Social Injustice and Moral Growth.
Through the character of Atticus Finch, Harper Lee explores the theme of social injustice, racism, and moral growth. The story's central message is about standing up against prejudice and injustice, as seen through Atticus's defense of Tom Robinson, a black man wrongly accused of ra**ng a white woman.

2. "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald - Theme: The American Dream and its Corruption.
Fitzgerald's novel delves into the theme of the American Dream and its corruption. Jay Gatsby's pursuit of wealth and success to win back his lost love, Daisy Buchanan, reflects the theme of the illusionary nature of the American Dream and the emptiness it can bring.

3. "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien - Theme: Good versus Evil and Heroism.
Tolkien's epic fantasy is rich with the theme of good versus evil and heroism. Frodo Baggins's journey to destroy the One Ring embodies the struggle between good (Fellowship of the Ring) and evil (Sauron and his forces), showcasing themes of courage, sacrifice, and the battle for righteousness.

4. "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen - Theme: Love and Social Class.
Austen's novel explores themes of love, marriage, and social class. The central theme revolves around Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy's love story, highlighting the impact of social status, pride, and prejudice on relationships.

5. "1984" by George Orwell - Theme: Totalitarianism and Individual Freedom
Orwell's dystopian novel addresses the theme of totalitarianism and its threat to individual freedom. The story depicts a society where Big Brother exerts complete control, showcasing themes of oppression, surveillance, and resistance against totalitarian regimes.

I hope these examples help you understand how themes can provide depth and meaning to a story, allowing your readers to engage with complex ideas, emotions, and social issues explored by you, the author.

THE SEVEN KEY ELEMENTS OF A STORY | PART 3

Hey there! Today, let us move to another essential element of a story, which is tone. Let's start by defining tone. Tone is basically the feeling or mood of your story. For instance, a mystery story might feel intense and suspenseful, while a romance story might have a positive and romantic tone.

Tone also refers to the author's attitude towards the subject matter, characters, and events within the story. It influences how readers perceive the events and characters in the story. The tone is conveyed through the overall writing style, choice of words, and sentence structure.

It's important to create a tone that fits your genre and story. You can use various writing elements, such as word choice, sentence length, and sentence structure, to create the desired tone. Even the setting of the story, including the weather, can contribute to the tone.

For example, let's say a character is facing a tough decision:

1. **Serious Tone:** The author might use a serious tone, formal language, and convey the gravity of the situation, like this: "With a heavy heart, he knew that his decision would have profound consequences."

2. **Playful Tone:** On the other hand, a playful tone might add humor or whimsy to the situation, like this: "Knowing his situation was severe, he decided to juggle options like a circus performer in hopes that a solution would magically appear."

3. **Suspenseful Tone:** A suspenseful tone can add tension and anticipation, like this: "Every second felt like an eternity as he weighed his options, knowing that the wrong choice could lead to disaster."

The choice of tone can greatly impact the story in several ways:

1. **Setting the Mood:** The tone sets the mood for the entire story, influencing how readers emotionally engage with the narrative. A dark and ominous tone might create a sense of foreboding, while a light and cheerful tone can evoke feelings of joy or optimism.

2. **Character Perception:** The tone can also shape how readers perceive characters. For example, a sarcastic tone might make a character seem witty and clever, while a somber tone might portray them as introspective and contemplative.

3. **Impact on Themes:** Tone can reinforce or contrast with the novel's themes. For instance, a novel with a serious tone exploring themes of loss and grief might resonate more deeply with readers, while a lighter tone in the same context could create a different emotional impact.

Overall, tone is a powerful tool that authors use to convey emotions, establish atmosphere, and shape the overall reading experience of their story. I hope this explanation was helpful to you. See you in my post as we explore the rest of the elements.

THE SEVEN KEY ELEMENTS OF A STORY | PART 2

Hey there! Today, let's chat about another essential element of a story: the setting. Every story has to take place somewhere, right? Setting refers to the physical location and time period where the story takes place. Some stories may have just one setting, while others have multiple settings.

To help explain how settings work, let's take the setting in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" by J.K. Rowling as an example. Rowling's novel is a great example of how the setting can shape the story and the characters' experiences. So, what are some aspects of the setting? 🌍

Firstly, there's the physical location. The story takes place primarily in the fictional Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which is located in a remote area of Scotland. This location adds a sense of mystery and isolation, as well as a magical atmosphere that contributes to the story. ✨

Next up is the time period. "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" is set in the present day, but in a world where magic coexists with modern technology. This blending of the magical and the mundane creates a unique and fascinating backdrop for the story. 🕰️

The atmosphere and mood of the story are also influenced by the setting. For instance, the dark and foreboding Forbidden Forest conveys a sense of danger and adventure, while the cozy Gryffindor common room offers a feeling of warmth and camaraderie. 🌲

In addition, the cultural and social context of the magical world of Harry Potter is established through the setting. It highlights the importance of houses like Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw, as well as magical creatures, spells, and potions. 🧙‍♂️

Lastly, the setting can also play a significant role in driving the plot forward and creating conflict. For example, the hidden chambers and secrets within Hogwarts provide opportunities for discovery and danger, while the rivalry between houses adds tension and challenges for the characters. ⚔️

Overall, the setting in a story is not just a backdrop, but an integral part of it, shaping the characters' experiences and influencing the events that unfold.

That's it for settings today. I hope this explanation was helpful to you! 👍

THE SEVEN KEY ELEMENTS OF A STORY | PART 1

Hey there! Are you interested in writing a story? Whether you want to create a short story, novel, or play, there are certain elements that are crucial for any type of story. And today, we're going to take a closer look at the seven key elements that make up a great story.

The seven basic elements of a story are characters, setting, tone, theme, point of view, conflict, and plot. Each of these elements is important and necessary, and they all work together to create a compelling story.

So, let's start with characters!

Characters are the heart of the story - they are the ones who make it come alive. Your protagonist is the main character, and they are the ones who drive the plot and conflict forward. You might have other protagonists or secondary characters, but your primary character is the one who makes the story tick. Meanwhile, an antagonist is the character who throws a wrench in the protagonist's plans, creating tension and conflict.

Most stories have many characters, but not all of them have to be well-developed. It's perfectly fine to have minor characters who are just there to move the story along. But your major characters should be fleshed out and have a story arc that keeps the readers invested. And don't forget - your characters can be anything you want them to be, from humans to animals to supernatural beings. As long as they play a role in the story, they're fair game!

So, that's it for characters! Stay tuned for more on the other six elements of a story.

WRITER'S BLOCK | PT 1

I hear writers needing help with story ideas and writer's block. Many things have helped me in this regard, but the most fundamental one is simple:

Write what you want to read.

How can you identify what you want to read? The answer lies in reading. Delve into the world of fiction and discover your favorites. You'll find that the genres or themes you enjoy reading about are often easier to write about.

Moreover, how do you expect others to enjoy what you write when you don't enjoy them yourself? Although some people might like it, if you don't, you'll get bored, tired or frustrated. And in the long run, it will show.

Therefore, immersing yourself in reading is one of the most effective and fundamental solutions to overcoming writer's block.

Trust me, it will reduce the possibility of writer's block by 70%.
