I know Lagos, I know Lagos... Okay where is this place?

29/03/2026

On behalf of my wife, Ibijoke, my family, the government and people of Lagos State, and members of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, today, I congratulate His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on his 74th birthday.

President Tinubu is a tested and trusted democrat who has devoted much of his life to public service, with a strong commitment to Lagos and Nigeria. His record reflects a deep belief in democracy, good governance, and national progress.

As President, he has shown courage in taking difficult decisions and remains focused on improving lives across the country. His leadership continues to shape our direction at this important time.

In Lagos, we continue to see the impact of his time in office, which laid the foundation for the progress we are building today.

I pray that God grants him strength, wisdom, and good health as he continues to serve and guide our nation toward greater political and economic progress.

Today, I was at the site of the Great Nigeria Insurance building, which was destroyed by fire on December 24. My deepest sympathies remain with the families who lost loved ones and with everyone whose homes and businesses were affected. I know that no words can fully ease the pain they are going through.

As of today, we have confirmed eight deaths. Five victims have been identified, while three remain unidentified. Thirteen people have been rescued so far.

We have established an information center at the site. Anyone requiring assistance or information can speak with officers from LASEMA, NEMA, LASBCA, and the other responding agencies.

The entire area remains unsafe. No business or unauthorized activity should be taking place there. The market is closed, and only first responders are permitted on the site. Emergency teams continue to work carefully through the rubble, particularly at the rear of the building, to ensure no one remains trapped.

This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by certain practices around the market. The unsafe use of generators and the construction of shops around transformers significantly increased the risks in this area.

Following a full structural review, the GNI building will be demolished using the safest possible methods. Some surrounding buildings must also be removed. While these are difficult decisions, we must prioritize the safety of lives above all else.

My heart is with every family affected. I remain committed to overseeing the recovery process and ensuring we do right by our people. Babajide Sanwo-Olu

AJ,

I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries.

This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season.

I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride.

In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.

I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed.

Today, we had the honour of hosting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 2025 Adamu Orisha Play Eyo Festival in Lagos. It was a proud moment for me as governor and as a Lagosian to witness the return of this historic celebration after eight years.

The Eyo Festival is one of the clearest expressions of who we are as Lagosians. Seeing the Eyos glide through our streets in white is a reminder of the deep roots and shared values that hold this city together.

This year’s festival was particularly meaningful as it honoured four outstanding figures who helped shape Lagos and Nigeria, including Mama Abibatu Mogaji, whose life reflected the strength and leadership of Lagos women, as well as Brigadier-General Mobolaji Johnson, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, and Chief Michael Otedola.

I am grateful to the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, our traditional institutions, and the families of the honourees for preserving this heritage. Lagos continues to honour its past while building its future, and the Eyo Festival remains a powerful reminder of that balance.
