While the exact origins of sign language communication in Nigeria are difficult to pinpoint, it's clear that in the past deaf individuals developed and used their own unique forms of communication for centuries. These early forms of sign language were likely based on gestures, facial expressions, and other visual cues that were specific to local cultures and communities.

Sign language communication in Nigeria since then has come a long way, evolving from informal home signs to a rich blend of local and international sign languages, with ongoing efforts to promote inclusion and accessibility for the Deaf community.

As a sign language interpreter coming in contact with hearing individual who can sign the alphabet is always a thing but then them saying 'I can sign" only to sign the alphabet.

In all honesty I always appreciate their enthusiasm but then Fingerspelling is just one aspect of American Sign Language (ASL)?

ASL is a vibrant and complex language with its own:

Grammar, Vocabulary, Syntax, Idioms and even
Cultural nuances

Finger Spelling, is only a technique used to spell out words or phrases. It's an essential tool however, Finger Spelling is not the entirety of ASL. It's a supplement to the language, used in context with other signs and expressions.

To truly communicate in ASL, one must learn the language's intricacies, including its grammar, vocabulary, and cultural context.

Let's promote an inclusive community and learn more about ASL
