2026 BATCH C1 PCMs, READ THIS BEFORE YOU TRAVEL TO CAMP
Congratulations! Your Call-Up Letter is out and your service year is almost here. Relax, but take this seriously.
NYSC has fixed Wednesday, September 30, 2026 for the start of the 2026 Batch C Stream I Orientation Course. Registration runs from September 30 to October 2, swearing-in is on October 2, and camp closes on Tuesday, October 20. Confirm all dates on your dashboard and on the NYSC official pages, because dates can change.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME
Log in to your portal and print your Call-Up Letter in colour if you can. Print extra copies too. Do not depend on your phone.
Check the camp you were posted to. Some PCMs get camp reallocations because of capacity, so read your letter well.
Carry your original documents and photocopies. That means your school ID card, statement of result or certificate, Green Card, NIN slip and passport photographs. Screenshots will not do.
Do medicals early if the camp asks for it. Fix any health issue before you go.
Travel in the daytime. The DG has warned against night journeys, and he is right. Arrive at camp before dark.
WHAT TO PACK
Pack light but smart. Camp is not a fashion show.
White T-shirts and white shorts or wrapper for the morning drills. White canvas or sneakers. Plain white socks. A white face cap. Your kit will be issued at camp, so do not buy the full khaki set outside if you can wait. Camp is where the official ones are given, and the ones sold outside are often expensive.
Bring a bucket, bathing sponge, towel, toiletries, mosquito net, padlock, torchlight, power bank, a flask, a few plates and cups, and a small mat or bedsheet. A bedsheet and blanket matter more than you think, because some hostels are cold at night.
Carry cash but not too much. Keep small notes for Mammy Market and transport. Keep your phone and valuables under your pillow or in a lockable bag.
Bring medications you use regularly, plus paracetamol, an anti-malaria drug and something for stomach upset.
REGISTRATION AND SWEARING-IN
The process will be long and tiring. Queue patiently. Do not skip the line, do not follow touts, and do not pay anybody to "help you" register. Registration is free. Nobody should collect money from you for anything official.
Once you are documented and cleared, you will be assigned to a platoon, a hostel and a room. Then comes the swearing-in ceremony, where you take the oath and officially become a corps member.
LIFE INSIDE THE 21 DAYS
Wake up early. Very early. Expect the bugle around 4 or 5 AM. Morning drills, parade, lectures, skills training, and lights out all follow a strict timetable.
You will march, run and do the "Man O' War" exercise. If you are not fit, it will humble you, but everybody survives. Just drink water and pace yourself.
Follow instructions from the soldiers, paramilitary officers and NYSC officials. Always answer politely. Camp is not the place to show who you know. Nobody cares whose child you are.
Food is served in the mess and you can also buy from Mammy Market. Eat what is available and stay hydrated. Avoid too much street food because a bad stomach in camp is no joke.
Keep your bathroom and hostel clean. Sanitation officers will check and punish dirty rooms.
Join the fun events too. There are talent shows, cultural night, sports, and Mr and Miss NYSC contests. Camp is a chance to make friends from every part of the country, so use it.
SAED, THE PART MANY PEOPLE IGNORE
During camp you will register for the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme. Please take this seriously. The choice you make here can change your life after service.
Pick something you can actually earn from, like fashion, catering, agriculture, cosmetics, digital skills, photography, video editing or graphic design. Do not just choose what your friends chose.
Take the training seriously and keep the contacts of your trainers. Many corps members turn these skills into income while still serving.
POSTING AND REDEPLOYMENT
Towards the end of camp, you will learn your Place of Primary Assignment (PPA). Many CMs stress about this. Please, do not run around paying people for a "better posting". You may lose your money and still get nothing.
Redeployment is for genuine reasons only, like medical grounds, marriage, or security issues, and it needs valid documents. The NYSC officials at camp will guide you on the correct process.
If you were posted to a state you did not choose, take it easy. Many corps members later say it was the best experience of their lives.
LIFE AFTER CAMP: WHAT TO DO
When camp ends, you will travel to your state of deployment and report to the NYSC Local Government Inspector (LGI) office for documentation. After that, you will be sent to your PPA.
At your PPA, submit your letter of posting and introduce yourself well. Be humble, dress well, and show up on time. Your PPA can give you a good reference letter or even a job offer.
If your PPA rejects you, do not panic. Go back to the LGI office to be reposted.
Register with your zonal or local government CDS group. CDS meetings hold weekly, and attendance is compulsory. Your CDS clearance matters for your monthly clearance and final discharge.
Open a bank account for your allowance. Follow up on it early so there are no delays. The monthly allowance is currently N77,000
Mind your monthly clearance. Miss too many CDS days or PPA days and you may be asked to extend your service. Keep every document you are given.
A FEW MISTAKES TO AVOID
Do not leave your service year to chance. Do not travel out of your state without a signed clearance or permission letter. Do not join fake groups that promise to change your PPA for money. Do not be involved in fights, drugs, or anything that can get you sent to the Board of Enquiry.
Watch your social media. Some things you post today can hurt you later.
USE THE YEAR WELL
One year is short. Learn a skill, start a side hustle, get certifications, save small money every month, and build your network. Many people finish service with nothing to show for it, and it is a pity.
Serve well. Stay safe. Keep your integrity.
To every 2026 Batch C1 PCM, best of luck in camp and beyond. Share this with your friends who need it.
