So, after close to one year in exíle,
Obinna was finally called back by our master, Chief Donatus.

Just when everyone believed his story had ended in disgrace, the script suddenly changed.

You already know Obinna's story.

Yes, the same Obinna who was publicly humiliated.

The same Obinna who was branded a th!ef and abandoned by everyone.

The same Obinna who could not explain how a receipt was mysteriously falsified during his days as the senior apprentice.

The same Obinna our master hand£d over to the authorities before sending him back to the village without a single reward after nearly five years of loyal service.

It was a painful end to a journey he had dedicated almost half a decade to.

No settlement. No appreciation. No farewell. Only disgrace.

But what happened next was something nobody expected.

After almost one year, Chief Donatus personally called Obinna back.

And he didn't just send an ordinary message.

To honour him, he sent a special delegate to the village to bring him home with dignity. Obinna and his mother were conveyed to the city in a private vehicle.

I knew absolutely nothing about the arrangement.

In fact, I only realized something unusual was happening when I saw a vehicle pull into the compound that Sunday afternoon.

It was just four days after my roommate, Kenneth, had been arr£sted.

In fact, several apprentices and factory staff had also been p!cked up one after another.

Fear had completely taken over the camp.

Nobody knew what was happening behind the scenes because Chief Donatus never addressed anyone publicly. People were simply being arr£sted without explanation, leaving everyone confused and anxious.

So when I looked up from the clothes I was taking down from the clothesline and saw Obinna stepping out of the vehicle beside his mother, I watched quietly.

A few moments later, he noticed me.

He raised his hand and gave me a gentle smile.

I waved back as he turned and slowly walked into the main building with his mother.

He looked noticeably slimmer than I remembered.

His clothes were worn, his hair had grown bushy, and the hardships of the past year were written all over his face.

The confident young man I once knew had been replaced by someone life had obviously humbled.

About thirty minutes later, message got to me that Chief Donatus wanted to see me in the sitting room.

As I entered, I found Obinna and his mother seated on one couch while three elderly men occupied the others.

Each of them held kola nuts, casually chewing while discussing among themselves.

The center table was filled with soft drinks, garden eggs, groundnuts and other refreshments.

I respectfully greeted everyone before Chief Donatus motioned for me to sit among them.

Although I was invited to eat and drink, I quietly declined.

After the refreshments, Chief Donatus' eldest daughter came in and cleared some of the empty plates from the table.

The atmosphere in the sitting room had suddenly become serious when one of the elderly men cleared his throat and faced Obinna's mother.

"Nwayi oma," he began softly, "we are gathered here today to correct an error from the past."

"What is about to happen is proof that no matter how complicated a situation becomes, and no matter how long justice is delayed, an innocent man remains innocent."

"Eziokwu," another elder affirmed.

"We are here because Chief Donatus has acknowledged his mistake and has invited us, honourable men, to restore honour to whom honour is due."

He paused, then continued almost immediately.

"So, without wasting anyone's time, let us hear directly from the horse's mouth."

Silence filled the room.

Chief Donatus slowly rose to his feet and greeted everyone respectfully in fluent igbo, the interactive way of salutation.

Then he turned toward Obinna's mother.

"The first thing I want to say is this... your son, Obinna, is not a th!ef."

"Ehhh?" Obinna's mother sprang to her feet in disbelief.

The room fell completely silent.

"I would never have believed Obinna was innocent if not for the discoveries we made recently," Chief Donatus continued.

"As at that time last year, every piece of evidence pointed towards him. Nothing seemed to support his innocence."

He paused and sighed deeply.

"But last Tuesday, everything came to light. We discovered that the entire incident had been carefully planned after the real culpr!t, Kenneth, was appr£hended."

Immediately, Obinna's mother broke down in tears.

Tears streamed freely down her face.

"I knew my son was innocent," she cried. "Obinna has never taken what does not belong to him."

Obinna himself remained speechless.

He sat motionless, unable to utter a single word.

Chief Donatus shook his head slowly.

"I am still shocked by the level of deceit I uncovered within my own home and business."

Turning to her son, Obinna's mother spoke through tears.

"I told you this day would come, didn't I? I told you that one day God would vindicate you."

Still, Obinna could not speak.

She cried even harder as she remembered something that made everyone in the room emotional.

"Obinna..." she called.

"What would have happened if you had succeeded that day?"

"You nearly took your 0wn l!f£."

"You made me restless."

"I thank God people r£scued you before it was too late."

At that moment, hardly anyone in the room could remain untouched by her emotions.

The pain in her voice was unbearable.

Then Chief Donatus called gently,

"Obinna... come here."

Slowly, Obinna stood up.

He walked forward with trembling legs.

Before he could say a word, Chief Donatus opened his arms and embraced him like a father welcoming his son home.

"I am sorry, my boy," he said.

Then he made an announcement that left everyone stunned.

"Aside from your agreed apprenticeship settlement, I will personally compensate you with the súm of seven m!llion naira."

Obinna's mother screamed with joy.

Overwhelmed, Obinna dropped to his knees.

"Thank you, Oga... thank you, my Oga," he repeated over and over again.

Chief Donatus shook his head.

"Don't thank me, Obinna. You worked for every bit of it."

He paused and looked in my direction.

"But if there is anyone you should truly thank, it is Ebuka."

And the very moment my name was mentioned, Obinna turned sharply and looked at me.

I simply smiled.

At that point, his mother could no longer contain her joy.

She began dancing around the sitting room, singing songs of thanksgiving at the top of her voice.

You really needed to see her dance steps.

If you had seen her dance steps that day, you would have understood what it means for a mother to witness her son's dignity restored.

For a woman who had spent almost a year carrying the shame of a son wrongly accused, that moment wasn't just compensation.

And no amount of money could ever equal the joy of seeing her son's name restored.

Except🙌

My master arrested his own elder brother.

Yes, you read that correctly.

It was one of the most embarrassing moments I have ever witnessed.

If someone had narrated such a story to me, I probably would have doubted it.

But life has a way of reminding us that reality is sometimes stranger than fiction.

Honestly, I have always wondered why some relatives become each other's greatest enem!es.

Arguably, there are times when complete strangers will sacrifice more for you than the people who you call your family.

In fact, I have seen complete strangers sacrifice their comfort just to lift someone else up, while relatives watch from a distance or even work against their own family.

I have countlessly seen people with no biological connection go completely out of their way to support one another.

Of course, I am not saying outsiders are always better.

Far from it.

Some strangers can be even more w0rse.

But listen carefully.

In many situations, before an outsider succeeds in hurtting you, a relative has already opened the door.

That was exactly what happened in my master's case.

For long, Kenneth, my fellow apprentice, had been st£aling from our master without anyone being able to trace the m!ssing moneyy back to him.

Although our master suspected him several times, but suspicion without evidence is nothing.

There were no clues. No witnesses. Nothing.

Kenneth was extremely careful.

A professional, or so everyone believed??

Everything he did was calculated.

Everything was executed smoothly.

If my memory serves me right, money disappeared from our master's house on two different occasions.

Every apprentice had become a suspect.

I still remember the night every single room in the boys' quarters, where all eleven apprentices slept, was thoroughly searched.

Yet nothing was found.

Not even a single pin.

At one point, Kenneth and seven other apprentices spent more than a week in d£tention while investigations continued.

Still, nothing linked him to the m!ssing moneyy, or even the goods at the factory.

Kenneth was never afraid, because for him to successfully pull something of such magnitude consistently, he was never working alone.

Someone somewhere was supplying him with strategies, advice and a safe place to 0perate.

And it only takes one b@d egg to influence the rest.

It wasn't surprising that Kenneth already had loyal followers among some of the apprentices.

But unfortunately...

Very unfortunately...

He made one mistake.

He crossed a boundary no apprentice should ever cross by having c@rnal knowledge of our master's daughterr.

And when that relationship resulted in pr£gnancy...

Kenneth disappeared. He practically took to his heels.

Now, here comes the most unbelievable part.

The search for Kenneth did not lead my master and the officers to the village.

It did not lead them to some distant town.

It did not even lead them to one of the many places people naturally imagined he might hide.

Instead...

It led straight to my master's elder brother's house.

Imagine the shock when this things unfolded.

Even my master stood there completely speechless.

You should have seen the look on my master's face.

Eventually that faithful morning, when the officers searched the house, they found Kenneth trying d£sperately to climb into the ceiling in an attempt to hide.

The strüggle that followed was almost unbelievable.

He f0ught with the officers as they dr@gged him 0ut.

But it was already too late.

Once he saw Chief Donatus standing there in the sitting room, every ounce of confidence disappeared.

He couldn't even lift his head. He couldn't look our master in the eyes. He couldn't look at anyone.

Inside that same house, the officers recovered bags filled with cashh that belonged to my master.

As if that wasn't enough, the off!cers discovered a small shr!ne hidden inside one of the rooms.

Inside were photographs of different people carefully arranged around ritu@l items.

Further searches revealed something even more surprising.

Kenneth had been preparing to flee the country.

A passport he obtained months earlier was recovered.

Alongside it were other travel documents and personal belongings packed for departure.

Everything suggested that he had already planned his escape long before his secrets came to light.

In that moment, Chief Donatus slowly walked toward Kenneth.

His face showed neither anger nor pity.

"You..." he pointed quietly. "I have nothing to say to you right now."

He paused.

"The off!cers should take you to the stat!on first."

Then suddenly, he turned toward his elder brother.

A dry laugh escaped his lips.

"I remember what you told me last year."

He folded his arms.

"You said that after your son graduates from the university, you would encourage him to come and learn business from me instead of chasing a white-collar job." he continued.

Another brief silence followed.

Then he smiled bitterly.

"I think it's crystal clear what your real motive has been all along."

However, his elder brother remained completely expressionless.

Not a word.

Not a defense.

Not even an attempt to explain himself.

He simply stood there with a straight face as the officers led both him and Kenneth áway.
