Why the Single-Use Plastics Ban in the State Hasn’t Taken Effect Yet

Despite the proposed January 2025 ban, the production and use of single-use plastics, including plates and polybags, persist in the state.

The government has postponed the outright ban to create an enabling system that ensures effective enforcement in the long run. This decision reflects the reality that the necessary infrastructure for enforcement is not yet in place. Additionally, it considers the interests of manufacturers who are now taking responsibility to reduce plastic consumption and develop sustainable alternatives before the ban is fully implemented.

Would You Pay ₦100 for a Polybag or Bring Your Reusable Bag?

During our recent field visit, we discovered that some supermarkets in the state now charge ₦100 for customized polybags, a practice adopted following the 2024 ban on single-use plastics in Lagos state. While this initiative aims to reduce plastic consumption, some consumers remain unaware of the reason behind the charge, while others resist it due to the added cost.

What’s your take- pay for a polybag or bring your reusable bag when shopping at the supermarket?

When it comes to energy consumption, solar power is making waves in Lagos. Not only does it pave the way for a greener city, but it also offers long-term affordability and a reliable energy supply.
This shift has divided Lagosians into two camps: those who have embraced solar energy and those still grappling with the challenges of petrol dependency.

What’s your take on renewable energy in Lagos?

With Lagos' growing population and the increasing demand for affordable and convenient products, many beverage brands have turned to plastic packaging. While this offers cost efficiency and ease of use, it raises significant environmental concerns due to the non-biodegradable nature of plastic. Currently, Lagos generates between 13,000 and 15,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, with a substantial portion coming from single-use plastics.

Interestingly, a school of thought suggests that while recycling plastics provides some relief in waste management, adopting better consumption habits such as prioritizing bottled packaging could lead to a cleaner Lagos. Bottled packaging, being reusable, may present a more sustainable alternative.

Should beverage companies shift their focus from plastic to bottle packaging?
Could this change contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for Lagos?

What are your thoughts on this?
