Episode 23
She thought she was dreaming, she hoped she was. It took a while for her to realize that the man had frozen for an entirely different reason. They weren't on the same page at all. He didn't recognize her. His shock was actually a reaction to some love birds who were playing dirty by the road just behind Ire so it seemed as though he was looking at her.
The memories came back fresh like yesterday, how her small hands had clutched to his blue jean trousers. He was much older now yet he was still very agile.
She couldn't believe it. Her father was the Uber driver she had ordered. She just stood there staring at him, her hands shaky, she almost dropped the load in her hands if not for the man that quickly collected it from her. Tears filled her eyes threatening to break through. The old man put the load in the back seat and opened the door for her to enter. He wondered why she stared so much. He was in a hurry to get started with the journey and make money to take home to his family. He assumed Ire was one of those spoilt brats who wanted everything to be done for them and that's why he had done what he did for her. It took a while for Ire to finally move after the man had held the door. She entered the car gently managing to take her eyes off the old man. Her hands were still shaky, she had to clutch them together to stop them from shaking, but they still won't.
"Can we start the ride now ma?" he asked with his deep husky voice. His English was a bit better than she remembered. He must have undergone some training though the heavy Yoruba accent was still heard through his words.
"Yes," she replied curtly.
Her heart thumped loudly in her chest. If she didn't say anything, would she be able to live with herself?
As they drove on, Ire thought of what to do. Should she tell him she was the little girl he had abandoned years ago? How would he take it? What would he do?
Her eyes scanned him from the backseat where she sat thinking, she noticed the ring on his finger.
He had remarried. He had raised a new family. He had moved on with his life completely forgetting about her.
She always thought she missed her father, she thought all she needed was to see him again and everything would be alright. But now, she regretted it. She was hurt, again.
He never loved her, he never wanted her. He just completely forgot about her. He couldn't say he didn't know how to contact his sister. She was there when her aunt had tried calling him several times but it never went through.
This man, her father, was just as cruel as every other person in the world. Every man on the face of the earth never loved her one bit, it was now official. If her own father never for once thought about her, then no one in the whole world ever did. But her mother might have. How was she to find out anyway?
She decided against it. She won't reveal her identity. It wasn't needed. Sadly her meeting with her father wasn't as spectacular as she had presumed. As they approached the road that led to her house, it occurred to her that her father would definitely recognize the house. She instead asked him to stop at a restaurant at the junction of the street. The man had not said anything all through the journey unlike other drivers she had encountered who always disturbed her with their endless remarks and chats.
"This ride was a peaceful one for her," she told him and collected his number so she could call him everytime she needed a ride. They could do more of offline rides, she had said. He had beamed with a smile after she had given him the money and even added some extra change.
She collected her load and headed into the restaurant for a show. She watched the old man reverse the car and hit the road again. At least he had gotten a new car.
As he left, the drop of tear that had been fighting his way finally escaped her eyelids. But it was only that one drop. Every other one was sent back to wherever they came from. She cleaned the tear and decided to rest a while before going home. She picked a table and ordered some snacks. She still had some money from her savings which she could live on till she got another job. Oh yes she planned getting another job. How? She didn't know. But she believed she could. Just like she believed many things. As she scrolled through her phone, her eyes caught something.

Episode 22
Presido was at least relieved that this lady had brought food for him. But why? He stopped to think. In his deepest of hearts, he knew he had insulted her and he didn't deserve any kindness whatsoever. His heart softened a bit.
"You know what, I'm sorry. I'm sorry I made you feel less of yourself. It was not actually intended. What I actually meant to tell you is that Jesus loves you. He loves you so much and he sees all you're going through. He wants to help you out if only you can be real with him. If only you can be sincere with God. God is really interested in you Presido, but are you interested in Him or what He can offer? Be real with God Presido, you can be real with Him" she said calmly.
You could see the passion in her eyes. Though he didn't show it, what she said softened his heart a little.
"I'll see you around. Have a nice day Presido," she said and left. He didn't call her back. He wanted to, but he didn't.
He waved at her as she left pondering on what she had said. "Be real with God". What did she mean?
He didn't fully understand what she meant, but he feasted on the rice and chicken hurriedly.
Meanwhile, Ire was standing in front of the Manager's office with an envelope in her hands. Her hands were shaky, she was not sure if she was making the right decision but this was what she wanted. She wanted to start afresh. And starting afresh meant clearing all elements of the past and starting anew. She would have moved out of the house too, but she decided it was not necessary. She took a deep breath and knocked gently on the door.
"Come in!" She heard from inside the office.
She opened the door gently. He was looking into some paper documents when she entered.
"Good morning sir," she greeted.
"Good morning Miss Ire. How may I help you?" He asked politely.
"I'd like to tender my resignation letter sir", she said calmly. He was surprised.
"What!! Ire, why?" He said concerned.
"I just want to sir,"
"Ire you're one of our best workers here. Do you need a raise or what?"
"No sir, I don't need a raise. I simply want to resign sir," she said firmly showing that she wasn't interested in any more questioning. He stared at her through his glasses and sighed.
"All right, if that's what you want", he said and collected the envelope from her.
"Thank you sir," she said and left.
She went straight to her office and packed her belongings. She would miss the office, it had shared a lot of memories with her. As she packed, she ordered a ride to take her home. The rider promised to be there in fifteen minutes. She thought of saying goodbye to her colleagues but she decided against it. They didn't worth it.
She waited patiently for the Uber driver to call which didn't take up to ten minutes. She walked down the stairs with a box containing her office things and her handbag. She looked elegant as usual. Her make up was a bit lighter this time. There was a spark of hope in her eyes. She seemed to be over everything that had happened. She was in better shape at least. She had resorted to starting her life afresh. She was determined to make something out of her life now. She had concluded that God was never really interested in her life. She made up her mind to climb the ladders of power and become a person of importance in society. And then she would come back for everyone who had ever hurt her.
She saw the silver Camry parked neatly by the side of the road. She called the driver's number again to confirm it was him. He came down from the car to assist her with her load. As their eyes met, they both froze in shock.

Episode 21
As she sped along, she thought to herself. What kind of pride is this?
This guy is a dead man already. He didn't seem like someone that had someone he listens to. She was irritated in her heart but still, she heard that still small voice.
"You disobeyed my instruction," the Holy Ghost said to her.
"He's such a proud person. He doesn't deserve any favour whatsoever", she replied in her mind.
"Oh wow, and you deserve the favour you have now?"
"Well I'm not proud. I brought myself under subjection. Me I dey listen na"
"Do you know that it is the same pride in him that is in you. That's what is speaking now"
Her heart skipped a beat. It then dawned on her that for her to come to the place where she thought she deserved the mercy and favour God had bestowed unto her meant she was proud. She remembered, grace brought her there. Who was she to feel entitled to His grace?
"Turn this car now and go back"
"What!!! No Lord no. I can't. Please don't make me do this. Lord please no"
He didn't repeat himself. She knew he wouldn't. She slowed down the car and parked. A tear trickled down her face. She knew she had no choice but to obey. She knew this was a key to her next level. She knew, but she didn't want to. She also knew better than to be led by her emotions. Slowly, she turned the car and headed back to Presido's house. He was sitting in front of the house when she got back. He seemed so surprised to see her. He tried checking if he had forgotten anything in her car.
"You're here. Any problem?" He asked with a calmer energy than before.
"No actually. As....I.....I actually....the Holy Ghost asked me to come back. He asked me to give you this before but I forgot, she said stretching out a white paper bag which contained a plate of rice and chicken, a bottle of Pulpy Orange, some pastries and an envelope to him.
He stared at her for a minute before collecting it.
"Have a nice day," she said in a hurry to leave but again, the Holy Ghost asked her to still talk to him. She desperately wanted to cry, but she comported herself.
"Does ministry matter more to you than true fellowship?" She asked calmly.
Presido was taken aback by the sudden question. He didn't answer though. He was still trying to process why had asked her to come back.

EPISODE 20
"See Presido, mi o gbadun o", she thought. But she didn't say it out loud. She simply took a deep breath and sighed. She was irritated but didn't show it, instead she beamed with a smile.
"I'm sorry about that. Presido, e ma binu. Since you're an adult, who am I to be lecturing you? I'm just a small child still growing. What do I know? Unlike you that has spent years in ministry. Don't mind my childishness jare. Let me not waste your time", she said smiling. Presido felt proud that she had realized her mistake.
"Ehen, now you're talking. It is well with you this younger generation sha. Thanks for the ride anyway. It's such a pity that I didn't take my car out today. Thank you sha," he said arrogantly.
The young lady smiled, though filled with disgust. She quickly started the car and made ready to go as Presido alighted. She didn't even bother asking the Holy Ghost about the food and sum of fifty thousand naira that he had asked her to give Presido. Whether or not He was still interested in giving him, she wasn't and she didn't mind the consequences of her actions. She would rather face that than give this arrogant man. He didn't worth it at all. She didn't say anything, she just drove home thinking of how she had just wasted her time.
Back in Pastor Segun's house, his wife was pleading with him.
"Honey you didn't have to do that now. That boy was hungry and the Holy Ghost asked me to give him food. You just prevented me from obeying the instruction of the Holy Ghost. And you know instructions are keys to next level", she said almost in tears.
"Is it the Holy Ghost that bought the food in the house? I don't know why you women think like this. I am the head of this house. My decision stands and is final, do you understand?" He shouted authoritatively.
"Honey you are the head of this house, I'm not disputing that, but even the bible says you should immitate Christ as He is the head of the church. Christ never refuses to help the needy, or give food to the hungry", she said patiently.
"Okay you are now lecturing me abi. You have now grown wings to be teaching me the bible. I don't have sense abi, I don't have the Holy Ghost", he retorted.
She was burning inside, but she didn't show it. Her role was to be submissive and she would do just that. She went on her knees and pleaded.
"Honey, please don't be annoyed. I didn't imply any of that. In fact, I'm sorry for everything I said. Let's just forget this conversation ever happened okay. You know I love you," she said and gave him a warm hug. He smiled feeling proud of himself. She was a wonderful woman, but how she had ended up with such a horrible man who didn't deserve her was still a mystery. He didn't say anything, he just left. He wasn't mad, he just wanted to feel proud.
Presido laid like a dead man on the bed. He had not even drank water since he got back from Pastor Segun's house. He was as weak as anything he knew of. Somehow his mind went to the question the young lady had asked him, "Who is God?"
He had been pondering on it since he got back. Who really was this God?
He had felt really hurt when that lady had called him a primary school student. Who was she to determine that? He had lived all his life serving this God. He remembered all those days him mum would wake him and his siblings up just to go to church. It usually angered him alot. He had sacrificed a lot for this God. And to him, he really didn't deserve everything that was happening to him. He deserved much more. His stomach grumbled. The last time he had experienced hunger like this was when he was very young. It felt like he wouldn't wake up the next morning, but did he?

Episode 19
.... zoomed in front of him. He didn't know who it was until the person came down from the car and approached him. It was a sister from the church. One of the very few sisters who didn't drool over him. He didn't know her much, in fact, from the little he knew, she wasn't really an active member of the church. She approached him with a big smile on her face. For the first time he noticed her beauty. No it wasn't just beauty, there was something about her. There was something about her smile that was just different.
"Presido, good morning sir," she said warmly as she approached him. Her voice was tiny, but her confidence was charming.
"Good morning missssssss" He dragged trying to recall her name.
"Evelyn," she reminded him.
"Yes....miss Evelyn"
"Sir please drop the formalities jare. Sister Evelyn is okay," she said smiling again. She sure seemed to smile alot.
"What are you doing here though? Do you stay in this estate?"
"Huh, no I don't. I came to see someone. I just decided to rest a bit before going home. What about you?"
"Well I stay in this estate", she said playing with her fingers.
"I can drop you off if you don't mind", she added.
He would have said no, but when he remembered what was at stake, he decided to drop his ego and accept that this was God showing him mercy.
"But which God sef? Is it the God that could not save him from being sacked? Or the God that couldn't prevent his phone from getting stolen? He had served this God with all he had yet he had nothing to show for it now," he thought.
"Did this God even exist?" He asked himself.
"Okay", he said simply.
She ushered him into her silver Venza that stood proudly by the roadside. They talked all through the way home.
When they finally reached his house, as Presido was about to alight from the car, she pulled him back and said, "I don't usually go through the route I went through today. I was quite confused when the Holy Ghost asked me to pass there, I don't know but I think there's something God wants to tell you. I sense there's a lot of pain and confusion in your mind. I don't know what's going on in your life right now but God wants you to know that He's not done with you yet. God really is not done with you Presido. But do you even know this God? You have been so overwhelmed with activities and ministry that you have forgotten the main thing", she said softly.
"I don't understand what you're saying. I'm a man of God, I have been serving God for over ten years of my life, " he said proudly. She could see the pride in his eyes, it was so evident.
"Hmmmm, can I ask you a question?" She asked.
"Yes go on."
"Who is God?" She asked.
He stared at her taken aback by the question. He knew the answer, or at least he thought he did. But as he tried to answer, he realized he actually didn't.
"Presido, you preach a lot about a God you don't even know," she said warmly. She was so calm and warm in her expression that you could see that she was not in any way just trying to prove a point. She was not as egocentric as the ignorant baboon sitting in her car.
"What makes you think I don't know God? Of course God is a supreme being, the creator of heaven and the earth", he replied not willing to accept defeat.
"Jomi, that was a definition we all learnt in primary school. I wasn't asking you to define God. If it's the revelation of God you had since primary school that you still have now, then, no offence but that only means that in the realm of the Spirit, you're still in primary school. There is more to God than being the creator of heaven and earth Jomi", she said still maintaining the calmness.
He was shocked she knew his name. It had been a while anyone called him by his real name. He breathed in and out. For some reason, he felt angry.
"Did your parents train you to be this disrespectful? You don't call adults by their names," he said harshly.
Her heart must have skipped many beats. It was his audacity for her. This was the height of pride she had seen all her life. Did this guy think she was one of those ladies who flaunted about desperate for his attention.

Episode 18
....was shocked to still find him in the house standing.
"Yes, what are you waiting for?" He screamed.
Presido froze to the spot. He didn't know when he started sweating.
"I..... actually, I..... I...... mu.... mummy..... a ...... asked me to wait", he stammered.
"DEAR! DEAR! DEAR!" He called loudly.
"Yes darling," she replied from the kitchen. Quickly, she left what she was doing and rushed to answer her husband.
"Why did you ask this beggar to wait?" He shouted. Both his wife and Presido were bewildered. His wife was quite taken aback by his insensitive statement. She knew her husband to be very insensitive with words but she didn't in the least expect it to be someone like Presido. He could lash out on other people but not Presido who had been of a great help to them. She remembered the countless errands her husband had sent him without giving him a dime. Just last night he was still talking about another one that would cost the young man nothing less than fifty thousand naira and her husband had no plans of giving the young man any money. She had told him times without number that it wasn't a good thing to do, but her husband had turned deaf ears to her words. He often said that it was an act of service and that it was his grace that opened doors for Presido in some areas of his life. She often wondered what sort of a man she had married. Sometimes she would want to give the young man some money, but she didn't want to do anything to paint her husband bad.
"Honey, he's not a beggar na. Why would you call him that? I asked him to wait because I want to give him something. Do you have a problem with that?" She said calmly.
"Yes I have a problem with it. How dare you want to waste my food", he retorted.
"Honey please calm down. I don't know what he might have done or said to upset you, but I apologize on his behalf. Please be lenient with your words. Moreover this young man here has done so much for us in the past. Have you forgotten...."
"Hold it! I don't want to here any thing again. I want this man out of my house NOW!!!"
"And you (he turned to face Presido), what are you still doing here? If I ever see you here again, I'll feed you to the dogs" he shouted on top of his voice. Presido didn't even wait for him to finish before he bolted. He was weak, hungry and tired but adrenaline covered all that up until he was few meters away from the house. He stopped to rest and catch his breath for some minutes. He was frustrated. If he had his phone, he would have called his friend to come and pick him up but how was he to do that now? He sat on a concrete fence in front of another house thinking of his next line of action. He didn't have any family he could contact. How was he to contact the people he shut his door against a decade ago?
His body ached yet the sun still chose to smile at him. He just wished he had collected the food before Pastor Segun came out. It had been a while since he had a decent meal. It was the suya he bought with the last hundred naira with him that was holding him till now. Even the money he used to transport himself down was burrowed and he had promised his neighbor that he would return it as soon as he got back. Now he didn't even have money to return home. At that point, it got dawned on him that he was alone. He realized all his life he had been building castles in the air. He had been making over one million naira from his office, he had never thought of saving because, well, it just never occured to him that there could come a time in his life where he would find himself where he was now. He was given his position as the Youth President mainly because of this. It was when he started giving to church projects in millions that he became recognized and was nominated for Presidency. All these years he had no savings, he spent his money on ministry, enjoyment and friends. Not even his relatives benefited from his money. He was so happy knowing he was giving to God's work. Or so he thought. Now the same people who had commended him and pushed him into doing so were the first to throw stones at him. For the first time he realized, "life wasn't fair". As he pondered on this things, he didn't know when a car....

Episode 17
He knocked gently on the big black gate that stood in front of Pastor Segun's house. The security guard came out seconds later and let him in after going in to seek permission from his boss. He ushered Presido in afterwards. He met his wife seated in the parlour watching television. She wasn't paying much attention to the television when Presido came in. She seemed to be busy with her phone. She directed Presido to the study where Pastor Segun was seated reading a book with a cup of orange juice on the table. His reading glasses were seated on his nose. He was wearing a coffee brown trouser with a black polo. The room was cool. There were three shelves all filled with books of different sizes, colours, types and authors. There were books by Kenneth Hagin, Benny Hinn, Joyce Meyer, John Hagee and many more. It was obvious the man was studious person. He probably spent most of the time in the study reading. That explained how he mostly referred to them in his teachings. Of course it wasn't Presido's first time in the house but it was his first time in the study.
"Good morning sir," he greeted.
"Ah.....Good morning our Presido. You didn't tell me you were coming. I was shocked when Mufu said you were here. I hope all is well. Have a seat", he offered him a chair near the table.
He sat down slowly thinking of how to present his matter. He had been thinking before he left the house and still had not come to a conclusion on the best way. He resorted to just go with the flow.
"So to what do I owe this impromptu visit?" He said closing the book and taking a sip out of his juice. He removed his glasses and placed them gently on the table.
"Well, ( he cleared his throat), I.....I.....want to.... discuss s....s......something with you sir. I.... apologize for not calling before hand. I actually.....," He stammered.
"Yes, I'm listening. Be fast I don't have all day", Pastor Segun cut in.
"Sorry sir. I actually, I lost my job few months ago sir. It's not been easy ever since. I have been trying my best to get another one and it has proved fruitless. I have lost my car and my rent would be due in few months time. In fact I didn't eat before coming because I've run out of food. I couldn't call because my phone was stolen yesterday. And....."
"Okay.....so how is any of this my business exactly?"
He was taken aback by the nonchalant reply Pastor Segun gave him. Wasn't this the same man who had sought several favors from him? The same man he had almost gotten arrested for. Why was he behaving so callous now?
"Well, sir, I was wondering if you could give me some advice and also lend me some money...." As he mentioned "money", he cut in immediately.
"I don't have any money to lend you," he said curtly.
His mouth widened in shock.
Was he dreaming? He couldn't count how many times this man had sent him on errands that had cost him over twenty thousand naira and he had not collected a dime from him. How could this man say he didn't have any money? Had he not been in church on Sunday when he had promised to give a sum of ten million naira for the church project.
"As for advice, what can I say? You youths of nowadays are always so lazy and careless in whatever you do. How could you let such a good job slip out of your hands just like that? I think you need to pray more this season. It seems like your village people are really getting a hold of you. Maybe you should add fasting to it. Anyway, I'm running late for a meeting now. You can come back next week and I'll see what I can do. But for now, I have no money to give to you"
Presido stared at the bald man wondering if he had entered the wrong house. Or was it not the same Pastor Segun?
He walked slowly out of the study to prevent further embarrassment. As he walked out sadly, the woman who was now fully concentrated on the television noticed his sad expression and called him.
"Ki lo sele Presi wa? " (What's wrong our Presi?)
"Ko si nkan nkan ma" (Nothing ma)
"I cooked fried rice, hope you don't mind", she said warmly with a big smile. Her smile alone was comforting. It was a motherly smile that made you feel safe.
"Ah, don't worry ma. I'm fine ma," he replied.
"Hmmm, I sense in my Spirit that you are hungry. And guess what, I am called to feed the hungry. So wait here, I'll pack it for you to take home," she said finally and didn't even wait for him to respond before she left.
Just then, Pastor Segun came out and

Episode 16
...his phone had gone missing. By that time the man had run away. If he had realized earlier, maybe it'd have been better. But he only realized when he was few steps away from his house. He ran back but he knew there was no hope. He felt so pained. How could he have been so insensitive. He wanted to cry, but he was a man, he had to be a man. He entered his room, after running Helter skelter, he was sweating profusely. He just didn't know what to do. He wanted to confess faith but, he was too weak. He just laid on his bed thinking. Presido had been going through a lot lately. He had been sacked from his office and he was unable to tell people. Firstly because he had preached that when you lose one opportunity, ten are coming your way. But it had been over two months since he lost his job and nothing was forthcoming. He had taught his members not to never take no for an answer but the same thing he preached came to fight him. Was it karma or just coincidence?
The other reason was that, a brother had come to him with the same predicament recently but Presido had insulted him. He had told the young man that he was too lazy and that was why he had lost his job. The young man had cried in his presence that day and he had felt he was weak. Now nemesis had caught up with him. Of course Presido wasn't lazy, he was doing his job excellently well. In fact he was one of the top ranking workers in his office. He was the last person even his colleagues thought would be sacked. Even his colleagues at work were confused. The only person that knew of his current status was his friend Chika. He stood at a risk of loosing his apartment because the company had been paying for it. His rent would be due in the next six months and he had millions of other responsibilities. He has lost his car with which he used to carry sisters to church on Sunday morning. He still didn't know how to explain it to them that he had no evidence. And now he had lost his phone again.
As he thought about the things that had been happening to him the last few weeks, he realized he needed to talk to someone. He decided the best person to talk to was his senior pastor at church. At least he had a rapor with him to some extent. He would hear him out and give him advice on what to do.
"He would go to see him the following day at his house," he concluded.
Presido walked silently not paying attention to the hustle and bustle of the streets. He hoped he would meet Pastor Segun at home. Well, he did, but maybe it would have been better otherwise.
