“What are you doing here?"
Lyra asked with her brows creased as she stared into those pair of most beautiful eyes and glassy skin that shone brightly in the sun..
“Should that be important than your wellbeing right now?.." Elias asked in the same sassy tone his dad would have used if he was in such situation.
Lyra got up quickly, realising she was really looking so pathetic and she didn't like it.
The kids don't have to see her in her vulnerable state every damn time!..
“I'm good.. err.. I just " she stuttered as she dusted her butt and wiped the little drops of tears in her eyes.
“Come on, I'm good. I just got frustrated with the fact that I have to wait for my grandmother to come before I'll be able to go in" she lied, hoping it was going to sound convincing..
She looked ahead to the car that had brought them and her heart skipped a beat for a second.
“Is your dad in there?" She asked, turning to Eleanor.
“No, our driver had actually driven us here. Dad had rushed out not so long after you left, didn't you see him?" The little girl batted her pretty long lashes.
“See him?.. no?" Lyra nodded negatively
“Oh, and it seemed like he was rushing after you because he left after we told him what you helped us with this morning. We had to compel our driver to go after his car too” Eleanor clarified.
Lyra swallowed hard..
“He saw Carl.. he saw us kiss too" she thought, believing that he might have indeed came over.
She waved the thoughts immediately.
“That should get into his skull and make him realise I'm really engaged" she thought again, and then she remembered that he had actually played a nasty prank on her that morning..
She smiled without realizing..
“Rowan is crazy" she mumbled aloud without realising..
“Are you gonna follow us to school this morning?, our parents never did that you know..” Eleanor asked as the got more closer to their car.
“Huh.." Lyra voiced before swallowing hard
“Of course not, I have somewhere to go and as for your parents, we all know about their busy schedules" she excused.
“Lies.." Elias suddenly said with a glare..
Damn!..
This boy was used to acting more matured than his age!..
“It's the truth okay??" Lyra replied immediately, opening the car door for them.
“Don't worry, I'll be coming to your school very soon. Of course I want to see my two best friends with other kids" Lyra tried to make them smile but that didn't even work..
“We'll be having an open-day this Friday, can you come then?.." Eleanor suggested.
“Please?.." she added, clasping her palms funnily.
“Isn't that for parents?" Lyra asked with raised brows.
“So what do we do when none are ready to come?" Elias retorted.
“Uhm.. I'll think about it" Lyra stuttered, forcing a smile.
“Going to Rowan's kids' school to represent him and his deranged wife?.. that's impossible" she scoffed in her head.
“Promise.." the kids took out their pinky fingers at once, short living her intention to keep those words as a deceit..
“That's not necessary, hey.." she rolled her eyes, trying to close the door..
“Oh really? Then I guess no one actually loves us." Eleanor said with a sad expression.
“Driver, you can move. We don't want to get late" she turned to the driver to say.
Lyra sighed deeply . This was more harder then she thought..
“Fine, I.. promise" she finally took out her Pink finger, making Eleanor smile again..
Elias only smirked..
“Promises aren't meant to be broken remember?” Eleanor recounted.
“Yeah, I promise" Lyra replied after a short pause..
They hugged briefly after the vow and she baded them goodbye before closing the car door
The car moved a second later and she literally stared at it till it was completely out of sight – that was how much the situation had got her overwhelmed.
“Lyra?" Zinnia's voice suddenly came from beside her and Lyra turned immediately. She was still in the cab..
“Finally" Lyra breathed, following the cab as it moved towards the frontage of the house.
“Been waiting” she pouted childishly when zinnia alighted..
“Is that a proper good morning?" zin2nia rolled her eyes, while Lyra took the remaining steps closer with a smile.
“I was on Nightshift yesterday and –" she tried to give an excuse regarding why she didn't come home but Zinnia interrupted.
“It's fine, I understand" she said, unlocking the gate's lock.
“You're sure?" Lyra asked internationally. Zinnia had been having some nasty impressions about her lately so she needed to clear the air .
“Stop feeling awkward, you're not a kid" Zinnia teased as the gate opened
“Well, you've always treated me like one and heaven knows I hated it” Lyra admitted in a mutter.
“Carl is so mad at me grandma" she said when they got into the portable sitting room.
“Why?" Zinnia asked, opening the curtains as the atmosphere felt stuffy..
“My independence" Lyra responded simply, knowing Zinnia was going to understand .
“I told you –"
“Come on grandma, he was offering a car. How was I supposed to collect that? I don't want anyone to boast of being the reason behind my success in the future. I want to make money myself” Lyra interrupted.
“Well, I guess it's high time you start living a life without me" Zinnia suddenly digressed.
“Without you?” Lyra blinked.
“What's that?" She asked further..
Zinnia didn't say a word till she left the window side completely..
“Lyra.." she called, lowering her butt to the side of one of the chairs ..
“What? You're scaring me" Lyra replied, noticing the urgency in the situation.
“You have to live this area completely.." she suddenly released the unexpected.
Lyra's facial expression instantly morphed into a questioning one
“What are you talking about?" She blinked, not wanting to predict things herself..
“Just go somewhere away from me. We can't be together for now" Zinnia stood up..
“What are you talking about grandma? You've been caring for me since I lost dad and mom, have you grown tired of accomodating me?" Lyra lamented, getting up too.
Zinnia shook her head sideways..
“No, trust me, I'm not tired of accomodating you. I just want to stop receiving from you okay?.. besides you'll be getting married soon and –"
“All this are not valid reasons to make me leave zinnia, and you know it. You're hiding something and it's so obvious" Lyra interrupted..
“Some people are after you” Zinnia suddenly said.
That was the only thing she could say at that point to convince her..
“Me?.." she blinked..
“What .. what are you talking about” she stuttered, getting more scared.
“Who are the people? From Where? And why are they coming for me? I did nothing wrong" she said..
“Yeah.. You indeed did nothing wrong but that doesn't even matter right now" Zinnia sighed.
“And who are the b@stards?” Lyra was forced to yell.
Zinnia was speechless..
Of course, she can't tell her the truth!
She definitely can't say it's her secret group that wants Lyra by force..
She had to come up with a lie – something quite convincing.
“Zinnia, don't even try keeping it from me!" Lyra raised her voice in frustration.
“The people that k¡lled your parents.." Zinnia lied..
Lyra instantly froze..
“The Carsons?" Her mind whispered in her head and that made her breath seize for a second.
For a moment, she remembered how she had reacted when William Carson spoke to her at the wedding..
How he r@ped her mercilessly that night..
How she had allowed his damn son to kiss her!.
How she had fallen in love with his fvcking grandchildren!.
How she had —
“Noooo!!!!!" She screamed out raising her both hands to the side of her face.
“I keep embracing the enemies.. huh" she thought, feeling her head sparking like she was about to go insane..
Zinnia rushed to her immediately..
“Lyra..”
“No! No!.. no!!!!!" She screamed again, slowly going down..
“Lyra please you have to take it easy ” zinnia pleaded.
Of course she wasn't aware of Lyra's revenge plans!
She doesn't know of her relationship with the Carsons..
Neither did she know that the man she saw in her room was the son of the devil – Rowan Carson!
And now, her lie is surely going to ruin things..
Infact..
It has started ruining things already..

OFFICE ★ 10AM
His hands moved very fast on the laptop and his full focus screamed professionalism..
If there's one thing Rowan Carson deserves accolades for, then that would be thriving to make his work and business top-notch..
The door suddenly flung open and Sheila walked in,..
She was looking exactly like a pr******te – incredibly short yellow gown, heavy makeup, high stiletto heels and a nasty red wig..
“Who the hell came into my house in my absence last night" she said as she walked in, throwing off her bag on one of the chairs.
Rowan said nothing, instead, he continued his business.
However, Sheila was impatient and more wild than his imaginations, she forcefully covered his laptop without warning.
“I'm talking to you Rowan! The kids will definitely not sleep alone and can't go to school if I or their nanny isn't around because you definitely won't do it in our stead, so how was all that a success in my absence?" She demanded..
“Are you mad or insane?" Rowan hit his desk hard in anger
“I need answers because I'm sure your insanity is more greater than a regular madness! How dare you barge into my office to rant like a dog after sleeping around all night!" He growled, getting up angrily.
Sheila scoffed.
Of course, she wasn't this daring before, Williams had made her grow some silly wings.
“You refused to sleep with me and I went out to get the satisfaction I wanted!" She defended like there was nothing wrong.
“Can you even listen to yourself? You slept with another man and drugged me, huh!" He yelled.
“Yes, that was a payback to keep you hanging. That's the way I feel too whenever you refuse to satisfy my cravings" she replied confidently.
“Tell me, did that b¡tch come around again? You slept with her to satisfy yourself huh?, and she dared take care of my kids!"
“Yes, I slept with her and i don't regret it. What will you do!" Rowan lied intentionally..
“You slept with that pig?, that b@stard? Huh? What the hell is special about her? You must be so shameless to stoop so low and have an affair with a pauper like her!" Sheila ranted
“What did you say?" Rowan's eyes narrowed
“I said you are so shameless to —"
Without warning, Rowan slapped her hard, making her stagger to the right side…
“You still have the guts to speak after portraying shamelessness yourself?” he growled angrily
“Can you even listen to yourself?!" He yelled again..
“Rowan.." She whispered with widened eyes, still holding to her stinging cheeks..
“You slapped me?"
“Yes! And I'll do so again and again till your brains get a correction!" He responded .
“You bloody betrayer!" She slapped him too, giving no room for suspicion until it happened..
“After birthing you two children? Two damn children, Rowan! You still don't respect or show me love! You are worst than the devil itself!" She cried..
Rowan's body couldn't contain the shock it was feeling at that moment..
A slap…
As in, a whole Rowan Carson got slapped in the face?..
“You don't even care about my kids, Rowan! I got pregnant, underwent a surgery! Fvcking risked my life because of you!" She yelled further..
Then she sniffed…
“You know what, I'm done speaking to you. That lady will die in my hands, I promise!" She swore and before he could process the words, she grabbed her bag and headed out..
Rowan's head immediately brought things to his understanding..
Death?..
She was going to k¡ll Rose?..
“Sheilaaaaaaa!!!!!!!”

My Mother In Law Paid My Husband To Marry Me And I Smiled At Their Wedding Table Not Knowing I Was A Business Deal
# # Chapter 8
Mr. Eze came back with more than we expected.
He was a quiet man — mid-fifties, glasses, the kind of face you would forget in a crowd. He met Ngozi and me at her office on a Wednesday evening after work. He placed three printed pages on the desk between us without any preamble.
The first page confirmed Agnes's two-million-naira cash withdrawal — dated eleven days before my introduction to Charles, exactly as the document stated. The second page confirmed the three-million-naira withdrawal made four days after our wedding. Both amounts matched the agreement perfectly.
But the third page was what made me grip the arms of my chair.
Agnes owned a two-bedroom flat in Surulere. The property had been registered in Charles's name eighteen months before our marriage — long before he and I had even met. It was not a gift between a loving mother and her son. The timing, the documentation, the pattern — it was all part of the arrangement. Part of the payment.
"She gave him property too," Ngozi said quietly, looking at me. "This was not just about cash. She was building him. Setting him up financially so that he would have something to protect. Something to lose if he stepped out of line."
I thought about the locked drawer. The carefully typed document with both their signatures. The clause about repayment if Charles failed to maintain the conditions.
Agnes had not just paid a man to marry me. She had built a system. A trap with financial walls. Charles was both the hunter and the bait — depending on which way you looked at it.
"She controlled him too," I said slowly. The realisation was arriving in pieces.
"Yes," Ngozi said. "Which means when this comes out, you need to be ready for him to position himself as a victim."
I had not thought about that. I had been so focused on the betrayal that I had not considered how Charles might react when he was exposed — whether he would fight, confess, or cry and beg.
"What do I do now?" I asked.
Ngozi leaned forward slightly. "Now we prepare. But first — and I need you to answer this honestly, Adaora — what do you want? Do you want to save this marriage? Or do you want to burn it down and walk away clean?"
The office was very quiet. Outside the window Lagos hummed and moved without stopping.
I took a long breath. I thought about the woman in the white dress who had stood in front of that mirror and thanked God.
"I want the truth," I said finally. "I want them both to look me in the eye and admit what they did. Everything else can come after that."

My Mother In Law Paid My Husband To Marry Me And I Smiled At Their Wedding Table Not Knowing I Was A Business Deal
# # Chapter 7
Acting normal was the hardest thing I had ever done.
Every morning I woke up beside Charles and looked at the side of his face — the jaw I used to trace with my fingers, the eyes I used to think were kind — and I felt something cold settle in my chest. Not hatred. Not yet. Just distance. Like I was watching a stranger who had borrowed someone else's face.
I kept performing anyway.
I cooked his meals. I ironed his shirts. I responded when he reached for me at night. I did not pull away. I could not afford for him to sense that something had shifted. Agnes was already watching me — that much was clear from her message. If Charles reported even the slightest change in my behaviour, she would start covering their tracks and all the work Ngozi was doing would be wasted.
So I smiled. I laughed. I was a perfect wife.
But I was also watching.
I began to understand for the first time just how carefully I had been selected. Agnes had not chosen me randomly. She had picked me because I was the right type. I was from a quiet family — no powerful connections, no father in politics, no uncle who was a lawyer who would ask uncomfortable questions. I had always been a peacemaker. I disliked confrontation. I was the kind of woman who would manage and overlook because she had been raised to believe that a patient woman held her home together.
Agnes had done her research before Charles ever said my name.
That thought made me feel sick. But it also made me feel something else — something sharp and focused that I had no name for yet but that sat in my chest like a quiet fire.
Ngozi called me on a Thursday to say the private investigator — a man named Mr. Eze — had already confirmed the first cash withdrawal. Two million naira pulled from Agnes's personal account eleven days before Charles and I had our introduction. The timeline matched the document exactly.
I was in the car when she called. I sat in the parking lot of a supermarket and listened and said very little. When I hung up I sat there for a few minutes and breathed.
Charles sent me a message right at that moment. A simple one. *What are you cooking tonight? I'm craving your jollof.*
I stared at the message.
Then I typed back: *Your favourite. See you at seven.* With a small heart emoji at the end.
And I went into the supermarket to buy the ingredients like a woman who had nothing on her mind.

“Does dad want to make Ms Rose his woman?" Eleanor said to her brother but her voice was loud enough to be heard..
Elias smirked, watching as the duo moved away from each other..
“Maybe" the boy smirked, shrugging just the same way his father does .
Lyra swallowed hard while Rowan moved towards the window, opening the glass frames.
The atmosphere had suddenly become hot as his cravings vanished completely.
“What was this all about?.." she asked, looking so frank and serious.
“Why would you plan with your kids to deceive me?.." she asked again but he didn't even spare her a glance..
This wasn't the time to fix his mess.
“Are you mad at dad, yet you kissed him?" Eleanor asked, holding her waist prettily and that rendered Lyra useless for a minute.
*Damn, these kids!" She gave her lower lip a gentle bite.
“You both shouldn't interfere in adult's matters!" She cautioned.
“Why? Aren't we humans too?" Elias spoke before his twin could.
She sighed.
“You didn't train these kids properly" she turned to their father who was trying to turn on the air conditioner because of the increase in the heat.
The drug effects, really.
“Would you be our lesson teachers then?” the twins asked at once..
“Huh?" Lyra raised a brow
“We talked to Dad yesterday and —
“El Carson, to your rooms!” Rowan interrupted Eleanor, shortening the duo's name at once.
“What then did we make her come for? We can't stay in that room!" Elias complained.
Lyra's brows rose..
“You called me to –"
Rowan sighed, feeling frustrated with his kids' forwardness and without warning, he walked over to Lyra, grabbed her wrist and then pulled her out of the room.
“Hey, what are you doing!" She struggled with his grip but he didn't stop until they got to the cellar in the sitting room.
They locked gazes for a second when he finally let her go and he watched her swallow hard..
“You are not so mad, are you?" Rowan asked, watching her fold her arms under her breath
She scoffed, giving him a ‘Are-you-really-asking-me-that’ expression before proceeding to speak.
“Rowan, you know, there's something so important that you should know. I'm not someone you can use anyhow. I'm human like you with some self dignity" She reprimanded.
“Then why didn't you push me away, you always want the kiss, don't you" he smirked, refusing to give her the satisfaction of seeming remorseful..
Lyra's head sparked in annoyance..
She really couldn't answer that question. Yes because, why the hell did she always find it difficult to push him away every damn time!..
“What the hell do you take me for? That you went ahead to collide with your children to deceive me into coming here!” she raised her voice.
“We all needed you and that was the only thing we could say to make you come around" Rowan admitted .
Lyra scoffed..
“Do you think I'll buy those lies?" She inquired but didn't give him a chance to speak before speaking further.
“You know what, I think it's high time I told the cops about your usual actions in taking advantage of me and report some.. maybe.. hypnotizing charm that you use in making me always wanting to fall for it!" She said all at once
Rowan laughed..
“Did you read those lines from somewhere? Because who hell uses charms in the contemporary world?", he laughed again..
Lyra was greatly displeased, especially with the fact that he wasn't bothered about her feelings as a human..
“Go ahead and tell the cops, then I'll –"
She interrupted.
“You can not tell them I stole okay?, if you had approved my service and given me the wages for the job, my need for money wouldn't have pushed me into stealing! You're just so cruel, selfish and devilish!" She proclaimed confidently.
Rowan was slightly pi**ed at that statement. If there was anything he hated , it would be that name DEVIL or anything related to it.
“Watch your words, Lyra,” he warned.
“Oh really? Have you forgotten that currently, you are nothing to me than just a Canadian citizen. I have freedom of speech!”
“Not in my house, rosella! Else I'll kiss you again!” he threatened without realising..
Her brows instantly furrowed while Rowan didn't bother giving an expression that meant it was a slip of tongue.
“Now I've confirmed that you indeed escaped from the psychiatric home" she mumbled but he heard.
“Just don't dare me” he responded.
“Look, I may not have a ring yet but I am engaged okay?, I'll be getting married soon” she said proudly.
Rowan rolled his eyes..
“Let's see if that wedding would hold them" he thought inwardly.
“And if you don't know, my fiance isn't as problematic as you are despite his wealth," she continued.
Rowan chuckled
“Imagine having a rich man as a fiance but you're still in need" he said in a mockery tone.
Lyra clenched her fists.
“The fact that I don't like being dependent doesn't mean I can't date a rich man" she clarified.
Rowan raised his left brow..
“So he never gives you money? Not even a penny?” he asked, marveled at her level of stupidity.
Yes. Her independence was stupidity to him.
“That is none of your business” She muttered.
“Oh wow..I envy that relationship" he said ironically..
“Well, it's good to see an engaged woman rushing from wherever she was to save me” he digressed.
She looked away immediately, with her hands still folded and then, she spoke.
“I'll do the same for anyone in trouble” she replied, fixing her eyes on one of Rowan's picture frames hung on the wall.
“Including coming down to the house of a man you claim to hate at night?" He smirked, still having full intent in having her speechless.
There was just this unexplainable satisfaction it gives him..
Lyra found herself looking back at him.
“Your kids were crying and I didn't want them to get traumatized!" She tried to defend herself.
“I never knew they were lying" she mumbled slowly, rolling her eyes..
“When you hate someone, you careless about them and their offsprings but you did none of that" Rowan smiled creepily.
“I can't let those kids get hurt for any reason" she admitted..
Rowan leaned in without breaking the eye contact..
“What?..” she tilted her head backwards, trying to stop the tingling sensation his brushing breath was giving her.
“Will you start protecting them from now on then?” he said in a whisper and she batted her long lashes
“What do you mean?”
“Sheila and I are bad parents, didn't you say that too?” he said again.
“Er..” she stuttered, wanting to speak but he was faster..
“Help raise my kids, Rose,” he added, still locking eyes with her.
“You really need to get back to your senses Rowan" she articulated, not believing that he really did mean all he had said
“I'm not kidding, you can start work tonight" he responded but that still didn't clear her impression..
She furrowed her brows
“They have a phobia for darkness and can't sleep alone” he spoke further..
“How's that my business?"
“That's exactly why we were calling you!” he moved away from her, grabbing a wine in the cellar.
Lyra watched him with a scoff..
He was really weird!
“As for me, I was drugged and was so hot. Sheila is so insane, I swear.." he chuckled like it was nothing wrong, unsealing the cap of the wine he had grabbed .
“I don't know how you made the cravings disappear” he poured himself a cup of the wine..
Lyra sighed, not understanding a thing.
She badly wanted to ask a million questions at that point but she could only take them one by one.
“Are you really not going to pay me for the days I served you?" She changed the topic quickly..
Rowan smirked..
“After manifesting some best guts?” he muttered.
“Well, we talked about this already," he replied simply .
“No, you can't dismiss that topic just that way! It's against the law to deny a worker her payment!" She reminded.
“I hate that you do misinterpret laws..” he hissed, offering her a cup of the wine he was taking but she only rejected it with a glare..
“I do not interpret –"
“You do that every damn day, rosella!" He interrupted.
She breathed, surrendering.
“Fine, take me home, It's getting so late and buses have stopped working already" she digressed again as her gaze met with the wall clock..
Rowan gave her a surprising stare..
Didn't he talk about her staying with his kids, just now?..
Was that a joke to her?..
He didn't say anything though..
“I don't drive at nights" he covered up with something else..
He knew what he was doing and she was definitely going to pay for her stubbornness..
“Then instruct your drivers!" She retorted.
“Did you see any of them when you came in?" He scoffed..
“So how am I supposed to get home?”
“You could call your lovely boyfriend or is it your fiance you called it earlier?” he said intentionally, noticing his kids' heads from the stairs. Obviously, they've been there eavesdropping since.
Lyra swallowed hard..
There was no way she could call Carl to come pick her in his house..
He mustn't even know of her connection with the Carsons..
And worst, it was too late to walk alone in the silent street.
“I'm not with my phone and there's no way I'll be able to reach him," she said.
Rowan smiled satisfactorily but he didn't let her see it. He didn't say a word until he was done gulping down the contents in his cup.
“Sheila won't be coming home tonight so make yourself comfortable” he said and before she could process those words in her head, he walked away.
Her eyes widened in realisation of what he meant a second later.
“Hey! There's no way I'll be sleeping here!" She tried to walk after him.
“My room attracts naughty things so follow me at your own risk” he said as he ascended the stairs.
Lyra stopped upon hearing those words.
“Rowan!" She yelled but he didn't even look back.
And just then, Eleanor spoke from upstairs.
“We're feeling so sleepy, can we just go in now?”
Lyra turned to them with a frustrated expression. She badly wanted to yell at them but f**k the fact that they were still kids!..
“At least you'll be in their room and not his" her subconscious mind attempted to make her relieved.
“Fine.." she said hesitantly..
In the next minute, she was in their room, right in the middle of the twins who were already in their pyjamas..
She couldn't change her own clothes because…..
Of course, she had nothing to wear!
All she did was stare at the ceiling in frustration, wishing morning could dawn fast..
“You're pretty" Eleanor muttered after staring at her side view for up to a minute.
Rosella turned to her, muttering a single word in appreciation. That compliment had really melted the anger in her heart.
She smiled.
However, There was something she couldn't help being surprised with and that was the fact that Rowan really did trust her with his kids..
That wasn't a common gesture of course!
“Should I sing you a lullaby? I'm sure all kids love it” she said.
“Sure" Eleanor and her twin said at once and before she could even start the lullaby, Eleanor shifted closer to her, hugging her to herself and resting her head on her breasts.
Elias only remained on his own side of the bed.
🌬️London bridge is falling down..
Falling down…
Falling down….”
Lyra sang, inhaling the scent of Eleanor's hair and kissing it repeatedly..
Unknown to them, Rowan was watching them..
No .
He wasn't peeping because she had even locked the door out of insecurity..
But he actually activated the video recorder in the room and was watching the activities on his phone.
He found himself smiling when Lyra kissed Eleanor's hair for the seventh time..
And then, He had no idea when he said —“I like her..”
He got back to his senses a second later, changing his smile to a frown.
“Be serious Rowan..”
