By Tobi Awodipe

To support cultural and educational values as well as assist more students in learning, BIC recently partnered with songwriter and education advocate, Yemi Alade.
The partnership includes additional education-based initiatives to further the brand’s commitment to improving learning conditions for 250 million students by 2025.
Together with BIC, Alade will tap into her extensive experience as an artist and advocate to inspire self-expression, creativity, and a passion for learning in young Nigerian and West African students.
The partnership kicked off during the back-to-school season in Nigeria, with the debut of the third instalment in BIC’s original video series, ‘Get A Pen You Can Rely On’, which highlights the importance of having high-quality and reliable writing products, both within and outside the classroom.
Speaking with The Guardian, Alade said: “As a Nigerian, education enthusiast, Victory Grammar School and University of Lagos graduate, I am ecstatic about the upcoming initiatives with BIC that aims to develop and shed light on the importance of education in Nigeria and West Africa. Partnering with BIC was purposeful and fun, as I continue to aim to positively impact upcoming generations.”
Commenting on the campaign, General Manager at BIC Nigeria, Guillaume Groues, said: “We are proud to be working with Yemi on our new back-to-school campaign. Her passion for education and experience as a goodwill ambassador for United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) make her an ideal partner.
The brand has demonstrated its commitment to education through various initiatives, including Global Education Week; BIC Cristal Pen Awards; partnership with Enactus; and its ongoing work through the company’s philanthropic arm, the BIC Corporate Foundation.

HP, others call for building skills for next generation of teachers
By Adelowo Adebumiti
Stakeholders in the education sector have called for building of right skills for next generation of teachers in Africa.
They made the call at the Educators Forum organised by HP in celebration of teachers themed: “The transformation of education begins with teachers.”
Stakeholders at the forum included Chief Executive Officer, Junior Achievement Africa (JAA), Simi Nwogugu, former Superintendent General, Western Cape Education Department and Specialist Advisor, Brian Schreuder; Chief Executive, Teach For Nigeria (TFN), Folawe Omikunle and HP’s Senior Education Business Leader for Africa, Middle East and Eastern Europe, Mayank Dhingra.
The group stressed that foundation of children’s future learning in Africa require equipping teachers with necessary skills to take education forward in the region.
Nwogugu said, “educators need to understand that their traditional role as expert imparting knowledge has evolved to that of guide facilitating knowledge-acquisition, design thinking and critical reasoning skills in their students. To do this effectively, educators need to be equipped with these and other emotional intelligence skills to adapt to students’ needs. Forums like this help steer all of us in the sector in the right direction, for how best to empower teachers to be more effective in the classroom.”
HP recently revealed the results of its first education-focused survey in Africa, which shed light on teachers’ skillsets and how the profession can be improved in South Africa and Nigeria.
Understanding the realities of 21st Century teaching, 10 skills were identified in the study as crucial to future proofing classrooms for educators. Across the board, teachers surveyed deemed these skillsets important, with 70 per cent saying soft skills, such as creative, innovative, critical and entrepreneurial thinking, as well as digital literacy, are very important.
Omikunle said: “The only way African countries could reach their full potential is by investing in education. By investing in teachers, we are investing in our children’s future and inevitably, that of the continent. We know there are numerous challenges educators face, and these discussions will help in providing African solutions to African challenges.”
“The time to rethink and reshape the future of Africa’s education sector is now. The past few years have thrust the sector into dramatically new ways of learning. It has shown us that we need to empower teachers with the right tools to ensure that learners have the best chance at future-proof outcomes,” Dhingra said.

ASUSS urges FG to tackle insecurity
By Nonyelim Chima
The Academic Staff Union Of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Lagos chapter, has urged the Federal Government to collaborate with state and local governments to tackle insecurity in the country.
Chairman, ASUSS, Lagos chapter, Mr. Kazeem Labaika, said most teachers have lost their lives and jobs due to killings and kidnappings, stressing that 20 million children are out-of-school because of security challenges facing the country.
Labaika, who noted that the transformation of education begins with teachers, said they should be supported to make quality public education a reality for Nigerians.
He also called on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to change its tactics and re-strategise for future dealings with government.
The union leader said ASUU can mobilise stakeholders to occupy the National Assembly as budget proceedings are ongoing, adding that if the Senate and House of Representatives proceedings are disrupted, they will take it upon themselves to intervene in the crisis between the union and the government.
Labaika also urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to recognise ASUSS, saying things have to be done urgently to give recognition to the union.
Chairman, Basic Education Staff Union, Lagos State chapter, Oluwasegun Faribido, said transforming education means making changes necessary to ensure that it meets its mission for the future, which includes expanding access for people to take advantage of learning.
He added that it is possible for people with an internet connection to watch lectures anywhere, participate in interactive exercises, and collaborate with others worldwide in team assignments due to the growth of Massive, Open Online Courses (MOOC) and Open Educational Resources (OER), which have expanded access to learning.
Faribido stated that the union is a partner in progress with the state government to ensure that educational policies of unity, love and industrial harmony are achieved.
Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Joseph Osikomaiya, noted that teachers in recent times suffer humiliation due to a low-class style of living among other fields and interference of government policies
