THE 50/50 SAVING RULE
WHERE WOULD YOU RATHER SAVE IT?
I got the habit of savings from my Uncle.
He would say -"Saving with Intention, gives you a better chance to get more out of life".
He taught me the 50/50 savings rule.
The rule states that you must save 50% of your income if you want to make it big in life as he would always add, if you can't get by with the remaining 50%, definitely you still won't get by with the 100%.
This is the reason why people who earn a 100k survive and sometimes achieve more than people who make 200k.
It's not how much you earn but how much you keep, my Uncle added.
My Uncle was right but was making a little mistake although he believed himself to be a financial Expert, he made me realize that intentional savings breed conscious spending
But he never knew the effect of inflation on savings and never understood the concept of "LEVERAGE and PUTING YOUR MONEY TO WORK" rather than making the bank richer.
I woke up from my slumber of stupid savings in 2016 when I wanted to buy my first landed Property. I got an offer on XYZ estate for 850k per Plot.
I realized it would take me 14 months to save up for the 2 plots I wanted if I follow the 50/50 rule, but to realize the savings faster, I decided to make it 60/40 whereby I saved 60% of my earnings because I wanted to acquire the Property in less than a year. Off course I already have the decipline.
Sadly enough by the time my money was ready, this property is already worth 2 million naira a plot.
I realized that if I had leveraged on the company flexible payment option, that I wouldn't have only acquired this property but I would have made a 115% Capital Appreciation on this property which would have amounted to a profit of 2.3 million naira on the two Plots.
And this profit would have been realized even while I am still paying for the Property.
My Uncle was deciplined but was never Smart because he never knew about "LEVERAGE"
Leveraging on flexible payment options on promising real estate deals since 2017, I have achieved a lot in real estate more than I would have achieved if I was following my Uncle's strategy and making the bank rich.
