INTRODUCTION TO GEOGRAPHICAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC OVERVIEW OF OKUNLAND

Okunland is a geo-cultural region located in Kogi State, North-Central Nigeria. It comprises the Okun-Yoruba speaking peoples found in six of the seven Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the Kogi West Senatorial District.

Population
The Okun people are a significant ethnic group in Kogi State. According to available demographic data, the total population of the Okun people is approximately 800,000.

Muslim Population
Research indicates that Muslims constitute a minority in Okunland, making up about 25% of the total population. Based on this percentage, the estimated Muslim population in Okunland is approximately 200,000. Within this population, the Muslim population can be estimated to comprise roughly 100,000 Muslim men and 100,000 Muslim women.

Distribution of Towns and Villages
Based on the provided research data across the relevant LGAs in Okunland is as follows:

Local Government Area (LGA) Approximate Number of Villages/Towns
Ijumu LGA 28

Mopamuro LGA 15
Yagba East LGA 49
Yagba West LGA 22
Lokoja LGA (Oworu Communities) 25
TOTAL 212

Note: These figures are based on the provided research and are approximate, intended for illustrative purposes.

A comprehensive list of specific Muslim-majority villages would require a more localized census, but notable towns with Muslim populations include Ejuku,ife-olukotun,Igbagun, kaba,Iyamoye, Ayetoro-Gbede, Ayegunle-Gbede, Ogidi, and Isanlu.

ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE ON CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARD ISLAMIC BUILDING PROJECTS

The establishment of Islamic centers is a highly encouraged act of worship in Islam, carrying immense spiritual rewards. The Quran and the traditions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provide clear guidance on the virtue of such contributions.

Quranic Injunctions,
The Holy Quran repeatedly urges believers to spend their wealth in the cause of Allah. A core principle is the concept of Qordon Hasanan (a beautiful loan), as stated in the Quran: "Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over?" (Qur'an 2:245).

This encourages Muslims to donate freely and generously for the establishment of religion, including building mosques.

Prophetic Traditions (Hadith)
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) emphasized the great reward for those who contribute to the construction of mosques. He said: "Whosoever builds a Musjid, Allah will build a house (palace) for him in Jannah." This hadith contains three glad tidings: entrance into Paradise, a special place therein, and forgiveness of sins. Another narration states: "Whoever shares in building a mosque for Allah, even if it is as small as a bird's nest, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise."

The Act of Sadaqah Jariyah
Contributing to the construction of a mosque or an Islamic school falls under the category of Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity). The Prophet (SAW) said: "When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah (a continuous charity), knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him." (Sahih Muslim).

Building a mosque or an academy is a perfect example of this, as the reward continues to accumulate as long as the facility is used for good.

THE NEED FOR MUSLIM ENHANCEMENT IN OKUNLAND.

The need to empower and enhance the Muslim community in Nigeria, particularly in minority contexts like Okunland, is multifaceted and crucial for the holistic development of the society.

· Educational Development: Establishing Islamic schools is paramount to preserving Islamic knowledge and ensuring that young Muslims grow up with a strong understanding of their faith and are equipped to become future scholars and leaders.
· Socio-Economic Empowerment: Developing Islamic centers that serve as hubs for community activities, vocational training, and charitable initiatives can address poverty and unemployment among Muslims.
· Da'wah and Propagation: In regions where Muslims are a minority, having well-structured institutions is vital for the propagation of Islam (Da'wah) and for creating a positive and educated image of the religion.
· Protection of Religious Rights: A unified and organized Muslim community, represented by bodies like the Okun Muslim Council of Nigeria, can more effectively advocate for the religious rights and interests of its members at state and national levels.
· Unity Among Muslims: Organizations like the OMCN, as well as youth groups such as the Okun Muslim Youths Council, play a key role in uniting Muslims across various backgrounds and fostering a sense of brotherhood.

CONTRIBUTIONS OF SHEIKH ABDULMALIK ABDULJABBAR TEJIDINI TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ISLAM IN OKUNLAND

The development of Islam in Okunland has been significantly advanced by the efforts of dedicated individuals. One such figure is Sheikh Abdulmalik Abduljabbar Tejidini, whose contributions have had a lasting impact on the Ejuku community and beyond.

Establishment of Al-Jabbar Arabic and Islamic Academy
A cornerstone of Sheikh Abdulmalik's legacy is the establishment of the Al-Jabbar Arabic and Islamic Academy in Kano. This institution represents a major investment in the future of Islamic education. It provides a comprehensive curriculum that combines Arabic language and Islamic studies with modern subjects, thereby equipping young Muslims with both religious and worldly knowledge.

Investment in Human Capital
Beyond the physical structure, Sheikh Abdulmalik's most significant contribution is his investment in young Muslims. By sponsoring and mentoring students at the academy, he has directly contributed to the development of a new generation of Islamic scholars (Ulama). These graduates are now returning to their communities in Okunland and beyond, serving as teachers, imams, and community leaders, thereby ensuring the continuity and growth of Islam. His commitment to human capital development is a model for sustainable community progress.

CONCLUSION

The program by the Okun Muslim Council of Nigeria is more than an event; it is a crucial step in the ongoing development of Islam in Okunland. The launching of the ultramodern Islamic Centre and the presentation of merit awards serve to motivate the community and recognize the contributions of its members. This short speech by the Chief Imam of Ejuku, Al-Imam Kamaludeen Abduljabbar Obadofin, may provide a vital platform to discuss the way forward. The Islamic faith places immense value on supporting such projects, and the tireless efforts of individuals like Sheikh Abdulmalik Abduljabbar Tejidini demonstrate the profound impact of investing in education and community infrastructure. It is through these collective efforts that the Muslim community in Okunland can be strengthened and enhanced for generations to come.
