Kano State Government has expressed its determination to establish food and nutrition unit at relevant ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) in compliance with the directive of the Federal Government order to have a decent and healthy family. The state Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Usman Bala Muhammad, gave hint while receiving officials from a civil society organization, Scaling Up Malnutrition, who paid him advocacy visit recently.
Represented by a Permanent Secretary in his office, Alhaji Salisu Mustapha, Alhaji Muhammad said his office acknowledged the receipt of the letter from Abuja, adding that very soon his office would commence action on it.
He said that a directorate shouldered with such responsibility had since commenced searching for ministries and agencies that have relevance and relations with food and nutrition, such as ministries of health, water resources, agriculture, education, women affairs, the state emergency management agency, rural water supply and nutrition at the health institutions so as to obtain relevant qualification on the and sanitation agency and directed them to establish such department or unit. He said the state government needed to see relevant references from others and the structure, as well as the Federal Government approval from the secretariat of the CBO so as to serve as a guide.
According to him, their major challenges are lack of experienced personnel who will manage the departments. He pointed out that the department would encourage youths to pursue food subject matter in order to be employed. He assured the visitors that so far as they supply relevant documents, he would give approval for the establishment of the departments by the relevant MDAs in the state, thanking them for the visit. Earlier in her presentation, the co-chair of the CBO steering committee, Mrs. Robinson, said the organization was working and playing a key role in human capital development in the nation and states of the federation.
She said that a healthy nation was a healthy society, adding that establishment of the nutrition department would afford dieticians and nutrients an opportunity to get employments. She lamented that the state has the highest number 46 per cent of malnourished children. She appealed to the state government to extend time of maternity leave from three months to six months and two weeks for husband fraternity leave so as to help nursing mother to nurse the baby very well.
Healthy eating is more than just a meal – it's a foundation for lifelong health.
Let's promote nutritious food choices and give children a solid start in life. By promoting balanced diets and healthy eating habits for our children, we can safeguard their well-being and help them thrive.
