SUPERFETATION
Superfetation is a rare medical phenomenon in which a second pregnancy occurs while someone is already pregnant. This happens when a second egg is fertilized by s***m and implants in the uterus after an initial pregnancy has begun. Normally, hormonal changes during pregnancy prevent the release of more eggs, but in superfetation, ovulation and fertilization occur despite an existing pregnancy.

The result is that the two fetuses can have different gestational ages, meaning they were conceived at different times, and they may be born at the same time or with some interval between them. This condition is extremely uncommon in humans but more common in certain animals.

How rare is it?

Superfetation is extremely rare in humans, with only about 10 documented cases worldwide in medical literature. The rarity is due to the combination of several biological processes that typically prevent it:

Ovulation is supposed to stop during pregnancy because of hormonal changes, particularly the increase in progesterone, which prevents the release of additional eggs.
The uterine environment changes after conception, making it difficult for another fertilized egg to implant.
The cervical mucus thickens, acting as a barrier to s***m.
The exact rate of superfetation is unknown because it's so infrequently reported, and in many cases, the difference in conception times between the two fetuses may be difficult to detect unless the difference in developmental age is significant.

Most cases of superfetation in humans have been discovered when there is a noticeable difference in the gestational age of the fetuses, typically when one fetus is significantly more developed than the other in ultrasounds or at birth.
