FG Launches NASENI FutureMakers Initiative to Empower Young Innovators

• The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing Nigeria’s next generation of innovators with the launch of the NASENI FutureMakers Initiative. The programme was unveiled by the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Mr Khalil Suleiman Halilu, and is designed to identify, nurture, and empower young innovators aged 5–16 across the country.

• Speaking at the launch, Mr Halilu said Nigeria’s innovation-driven future depends on early and deliberate investment in young minds. He explained that the initiative, inspired by global models such as the United States’ FIRST Robotics, the United Kingdom’s TeenTech, and India’s Atal Innovation Mission, will be implemented through NASENI institutes nationwide to provide hands-on exposure to science, engineering, technology, and creativity, in line with the Federal Government’s drive to promote STEM education and long-term national development.

Troops neutralise kidnappers, recover weapons in Plateau

By: Zagazola Makama

Troops of 3 Division of the Nigerian Army under Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace (JTF OPEP) have raided a kidnappers’ hideout in Plateau State, neutralising suspects and recovering weapons during the operation.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation followed credible intelligence on the activities of kidnappers operating at Lantom village in Kadarko District of Wase Local Government Area.

According to the sources, the troops carried out the raid on Jan. 6, during which four suspected criminals were arrested at the hideout.

Items recovered from the suspects included one locally fabricated rifle, one axe and one machete.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects are responsible for several kidnapping and armed robbery incidents in Kadarko District and its environs,” the source said.

The source added that two members of the criminal gang escaped during the initial raid with an AK-47 rifle belonging to the group.

It was further disclosed that during interrogation, the arrested suspects volunteered information on the location of their arms and ammunition cache and offered to lead troops to the hideout on the outskirts of Kadarko for recovery.

However, while leading the troops to the location, the suspects reportedly made desperate attempts to disarm one of the guards in an effort to escape.

“The troops acted decisively and neutralised the kidnappers in the process,” the source said.

All recovered items, it was gathered, are currently in the custody of the troops.

The military said follow-up operations were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang and recover their weapons.

INEC Resumes Nationwide Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has resumed the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, marking the commencement of the second phase of the process.

The exercise resumed on Monday after the first phase ended on December 10, 2025. INEC had earlier opened online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, before commencing physical registration at centres nationwide on August 25, 2025.

According to the commission, 9,891,801 Nigerians began the online pre-registration during the first phase.

However, only 2,572,054 people completed their registration nationwide as of November 28, 2025. This figure comprises 1,503,832 online registrations and 1,068,222 registrations conducted physically at registration centres.

INEC explained that the interval between the two phases was used to carry out statutory activities, including the display of the voters’ register for public scrutiny.

“In line with Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2022, the voters’ register was displayed for claims and objections from December 15 to 21, 2025, at local government offices where the CVR was conducted,” the commission said.
