The clamours for an Igbo man to be the president of the nation has reached a very serious level. Since the country returned to democracy in 1999, no Igbo man has been elected to the top position in the country. And this worries many people most especially the Igbo who feel they are entitled to the post.

Igbo leaders taking pictures with Muhammadu Buhari.

As Nigerian draws closer to the 2023 general elections and as the debate for Igbo presidency continues to gain momentum, there are indications that only the People's Democratic Party (PDP) can guarantee the hope of an Igbo man to become the president of the country.

Here are the reasons:

The All Progresives Congress is deeply rooted in the southwestern part of the country. The APC controls five out of six states in the geopolitical zone. The party has Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos and Osun State. It is a common knowledge that the APC has put its footholds firmly on the region and the PDP has been relegated.

Expectedly, power will return to the southern part of the country once the president, Muhammadu Buhari, finishes his tenure in office in 2023 based on the principal of zoning formula.

In the southwest region, the APC has powerful chieftains and politicians who have interest in the top office in Nigeria. Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the national leader of the APC, is undoubtedly eyeing the seat and he has set mercenaries in place to actualise the dream.

Mr. Bola Tinubu has never hidden his ambition of taking over from Muhammadu Buhari. Even he participated in the merging of the ACN, CPC and APGA just to make it easier for his own presidential ambition.

There are more influential APC chieftains in the southwest region who will give it all it takes just to get the ticket of the All Progresives Congress for the 2023 presidential election.

Inversely, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has been very popular in the southeastern states since 1999. Even when the APC tsunami happened in 2015, the Igbo people in the southeast Nigeria still supported the PDP. The political party controls three out of five states in the zone.

The People's Democratic Party will surely put its popularity in each of the zone into consideration and the party won't disappoint the Igbo people.

Besides, in the last general elections, the PDP chose its vice presidential candidate from the region. Mr. Peter Obi, a former Anambra State governor was the running mate of Atiku Abubakar. And the Igbo supported them fully.

As it is now, Mr. Peter Obi is a leader in the PDP in the southern Nigeria. He can be supported by the Igbo people so that the People's Democratic Party (PDP) can give him the presidential ticket for the 2023 general elections.

Another leading figure in the PDP in the southeast Nigeria is Ike Ekweremadu. The PDP chieftain is a serving Senator and he was for three consecutive times a deputy senate president.

Ike Ekweremadu deputised Senator David Mark and Senator Bukola Saraki. He has had enough knowledge of Nigerian politics and he remains a powerful member of the PDP.

It must be noted that the PDP doesn't have a specific leader in the Yoruba land. The most powerful among its members in the region is Mr. Seyi Makinde.

Governor Seyi Makinde at the middle during a PDP rally in Ibadan.

Makinde is Oyo State governor who is on his first term. Makinde will consider running for the second time in Oyo State. He won't see any reason why he should contest for the PDP ticket for the presidential election. Hence, there is no hope the PDP will get its candidate in the southwest.

In February 2013, Four Legacy Parties namely, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP), Congress For Progressive Change (CPC) and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) merged to form the All Progressives Congress (APC). They were joined in November 2013 by the n-PDP, a gathering of Five PDP Governors. Ahead of the 2023 Presidential Election, Some bigwigs of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are strategizing and working tirelessly to realize their 2023 Political Quests.

Notable among these APC Chieftains are Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the Immediate Past Governor of Rivers State and incumbent Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and Kaduna Governor State, Mallam Nasir El-rufai.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

A master strategist who has dominated Lagos State Politics for over Two Decades, Tinubu has been long expected to run for the Country's top job. His formidable political network, propensity for deal making and huge financial strength gives him an edge over many other contenders. Since he joined politics, the Lagos Strong Man has been firm and consistent with his Political Party. He started with Alliance for Democracy (AD) which later metamorphosed into Action Congress (AC), and later became the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and now APC which is founded. Tinubu is undoubtedly a force to reckon with particularly in the South-west.

Rotimi Amaechi

Amaechi is another strong contender in the race, with a strong political base in the South-south and South-east. He belongs to the n-PDP bloc of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), he was a Two-term State Speaker and a Two-term Governor of Rivers State. He currently serves as the Minister of Transportation, Amaechi is known to be a close ally of Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna State who is also nursing a Presidential Ambition under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Amaechi is a Former Director General of Muhammadu Buhari Presidential Campaign. The Ikwerre, Rivers State-born politician is a prominent politician in Nigeria's political circle. If the political caculations favour anyone anyone from the South-south, once the competency factor is established, Amaechi is eminently qualified to emerge as the party's flagbearer.

Nasir El-rufai

A man of golden networks, he is widely praised for his work in Kaduna State where he is the incumbent Governor, El-rufai is currently serving his second term as Governor of Kaduna State. Formerly the Director of Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) between 1999 and 2003, and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) between 2003 and 2007 under the Administration of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). A founding member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), El-rufai was a prominent Businessman before entering politics, with a large network of politicians and businesspersons. Although, El-rufai initially made a successful mark in business, casting his net to the political world was not fruitful from the start, but through acquaintances and timely opportunities, he began to make his mark and became influential. Some wonder if El-rufai will build on his momentum and run for president in 2023. He is undoubtedly a force in Northern politics.

Who do you think will be the best Candidate for the All Progressives Congress among the trio???

If any region, tribe feels they are not welcomed in it, is never true. The Igbo people were the first and trusted persons to hold Nigeria after independence, even untill the military era in nigeria begun, they were on the front. But some situations carried out by some persons among them broke that trust.

On 15 January 1966, Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu led the first ever military coup in Nigeria. The coup plotters claimed they wanted a better and united Nigeria that offered equal opportunity to its citizens without regional or ethnic considerations and nepotism, large-scale looting of public wealth, persistent poverty of the people, insecurity, the Tiv riots and the western region’s consistent violent protests.

This coup brought in an igbo officer Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, he abrogated the federal system of government and substituted a unitary system in 1966, which reinforced northerner’s fears that the southerners could take control of everything.

The jubilations that initially made the coup carried to quickly give other riegions warnin, was after a sudden realisation of the sectional and imbalanced composition of the coup leaders, as well as the nature of the assassination and killings of prominent politicians and military officers as a result of the coup. The coup planners were Kaduna Nzeogwu (Igbo), Adewale Ademoyega (Yoruba), Emmanuel Ifeajuna (Igbo), Timothy Onwuatuegwu (Igbo), Chris Anuforo (Igbo), Humphrey Chukwuka (Igbo), Don Okafor (Igbo), Ben Gbulie (Igbo), Emmanuel Nwobosi (Igbo) and Ogbo Oji (Igbo).6 Nine of the 10 coup initiators were Igbo from the then eastern region of Nigeria, and one Yoruba from the western region. The coup resulted in the assassination of Ahmadu Bello (Fulani), the premier of northern Nigeria; Samuel Ládòkè Akíntọ́lá (Yoruba), the premier of the western region; Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (Baggara), prime minister of Nigeria; and Festus Okotie-Eboh (Itshekiri), federal minister of finance. The senior officers who were assassinated during the coup were Zakariya Maimalari (Kanuri), Samuel Ademulegun (Yoruba), Abogo Largema (Kanuri), James Pam (Berom), Arthur Unegbe (Igbo) and Ralph Shodeinde (Yoruba).7 Although the coup might have been planned with the best of intentions, its outcome looked to target mostly non-Igbo ethnic groups. While leaders from the northern, western and mid-western regions were killed during the coup, no Igbo leaders were assassinated. Nnamdi Azikiwe (Igbo), president of Nigeria, had at the time gone on a prolonged medical trip to London.8

The coup succeeded in Kaduna (the northern region capital), failed in Lagos (the federal capital) and Ibadan (the western regional capital) and barely took place in Benin (the mid-western capital) and Enugu (the eastern capital). In the absence of the prime minister, acting president Nwafor Orizu was compelled to hand over to the military, which was headed at the time by General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, an officer from the eastern region.

With the above statistics you could see why many regions have to fear living power, especially the seat of a president, in the hands of an Igbo politician.

The above history, i used it as a reference to take us back to what the western region and northern part fear about east. Most have been forgotten, but continues agitations would keep rising them. Even in America, some Americans wish they were born as British and vice versa, but yet they all hold on to what they got.

Recall that Nigrian-British Nnamdi Kanu created the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group. He advice his fellow easterners not to vote or even go for a voters card.

It is not uncommon for groups who have fought and lost a secession war to nurse desires for independence. Shared victimhood makes for easy mobilisation of support. The Igbos continued to feel alienated from Nigeria after the civil war. They believed they had been excluded from the political and socio-economic mainstream of the country, and the clamour for a separate existence from Nigeria continued to gain momentum. This eventually led to the establishment of different movements.

this movements created are the major set back of the eastern region especially the igbo ethnic group. It is hindering them from attaining the height they wished for, in nigeria politics.

Yet the igbo complains of been treated bad, not allowing them rule the country. But did they forget we need votes to win an election?.

Atiku would have won or even have more votes than what he had in the last presidential election, if the igbo people had enough voters card to vote. They were been deceived, and yet they complain of bad treatments.

Untill they realize that holding there unity, coming together will make them attain those heights they wished for in Nigerians political system.

It is important to note that there are many contradictions in the motives for the Biafran agitation. Some people use it as bargaining chips and some for personal gains, while some sincerely want secession. A good majority of Igbos in the south-east and other parts of the country do not support the movement, and would rather have a fair and equitable Nigeria than a separate state of Biafra.

Nigeria is a blessed nation with many ethnic groups, with different believes, and how they run there daily affairs. But one thing that bring us all together is the name Nigeria.

Javier Tebas wrote a letter to Zaragoza president Christian Lapetra outlining that LaLiga have rejected the request of the LaLiga SmartBank club.

Another complaint of Zaragoza was in the fact that Luis Suarez will no longer be able to participate in the playoffs as a result of the ongoing postponement of the Deportivo vs Fuenlabrada fixture, with the striker's loan period at the club expiring.

The president of LaLiga does not see this as grounds for scrapping the playoffs as he insists that similar has occurred at other clubs across Spanish football.

The club are now aware of LaLiga's position on the matter, but have not yet heard from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the National Sports Council (CSD).

Zaragoza plan to continue their legal battle in a bid to help secure promotion.

Vegetables are an essential part of our daily foods. They are one of the six classes of food that make up our balanced diet. Vegetables are a good source of vitamins and minerals and help our body’s’ immune system fight against various diseases.

Many nutritionists and health experts have advised that vegetables should be consumed daily in not less than 3 – 5 servings.

Many of us have not stood true to this but are still living quite well but still, vegetables should always be an integral part of our meals.

Before going that market to buy 1 sack of efo or pumpkin leaf, you should take your phone and read this very vital information i have about those delicious veggies you are about to buy.

Vegetables might be healthy but there are some that you should try to avoid consuming in excess because of the various health risks that they are associated with.

Here they are.

Onions

Onions cannot be avoided whether you like it or not. They are a must-use ingredient in almost every food or dish we consume at home or in restaurants. They have even become flavors in biscuits, chips, noodles and stews.

Unfortunately, onions are quite dangerous when you consume them in certain proportions which are sadly unavoidable.

Onions contain fructan, a carbohydrate well-known for causing mild to severe gastrointestinal problems. Onions can be difficult for your body to absorb and can result in excessive water content in your intestine which can cause bloating and discomfort in your guts.

Not putting onions in your food will not kill its flavor so reduce onion intake and eat healthier foods.

Canned tomatoes

Yeah! That’s right. Tomatoes are vegetables. Nutritionists, like me, classify fruits into the usual ‘fruits’ and botanical fruits.

Fruits are the sweeter ones that contain sugar while botanical fruits like tomatoes are the ones that contain less sugar and are therefore classified as vegetables.

Tomatoes are good when they are raw and better when they are cooked but when they are canned, they become dangerous. That's because some cans are made with a chemical called bisphenol-A (BPA).

The combination of the chemical and the high acidic level of tomatoes makes canned tomatoes dangerous. Eat only the raw ones.

Corn

Corn is very nutritious but for people who want to lose weight, then it’s dangerous for you. Corn has a high glycemic index which can rapidly increase sugar in the blood and can cause craving for many sugary and unhealthy foods.
This can lead to an increase in body weight and can increase risk of obesity. High glycemic index is also a risk factor of diabetes which means that corn will likely increase your risk of diabetes. It is not a must to eat corn. Take other healthier options.
Beans
Beans are legumes which have (also veggies) many nutritional values and are considered ‘very healthy’. However, beans pose some health due to certain chemicals which are present in the beans.
Chemicals like phytohaemagglutinin, a type of lectin, can cause gastroenteritis, a condition that may induce vomiting and nausea. If you consume raw or improperly cooked beans, before the end of 3hours you would be down with diarrhea or abdominal pain. Just six of these beans can produce these symptoms. Make sure to cook your beans properly so that these chemicals do not affect you.
Melon seeds (Egusi)
Egusi is a favorite soup amongst many people. It can be eaten with lots of swallows like eba and pounded yam. However, it contains a type of oil known as phytosterols which when consumed, compete with cholesterol for absorption in the digestive system.
Egusi has a high calorie count and when it is eaten with foods like garri, fufu and pounded yam, the calorie count in the total combined food will become too much and will increase the risk of obesity.
There are many other veggies out there which are very healthy that you can eat. However, the ones mentioned here also have their own health benefits but should be consumed in moderate proportions like every other food.
