A three-storey building under construction collapsed on Thursday morning in Awka, Anambra State, leaving several persons trapped.
The incident occurred at about 11:40 a.m. behind the Anambra State House of Assembly, off Ekwueme Square in Okpuno.
Witnesses said artisans were working on the roof when the structure suddenly caved in, causing panic in the area.
The building, which had four suspended floors and was at the roofing stage, reportedly gave way without warning.
Preliminary findings by officials of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, and the state’s materials testing department indicated that poor concrete mixture and possible foundation defects may have contributed to the collapse.
Chairman of COREN-ERM Anambra State, Victor Meju, said the structure was a private building that had just been roofed last week. He confirmed that it suffered a “vertically complete collapse to the rubble.”
Rescue operations were delayed due to the absence of excavators and other essential equipment, as bystanders and passersby attempted makeshift efforts to save those trapped.
Relevant state agencies, including the Ministry of Housing and the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, have since been mobilized to the site.

The Coalition for Equity and Accountability in Public Finance, CEAPF, has demanded the immediate resignation of Finance Minister Wale Edun and Shamsedeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, the Accountant-General of the Federation, alleging failure to pay contractors for projects duly captured in the 2024 budget and fully executed by local firms.
In a statement on Wednesday, signed by its President, Segun Daramola, and Secretary-General, Isaac Idachaba, the coalition said it would formally approach the National Assembly and lobby lawmakers across party lines to pass a vote of no confidence on the two officials if they refuse to vacate their offices voluntarily.
The statement read, “This is no longer a mere administrative delay; it is a calculated dereliction of duty. Contractors have completed projects backed by law, projects approved and funded under the 2024 Appropriation Act, yet they are left unpaid and forced into bankruptcy. Meanwhile, the Federal Government is executing and paying for projects not captured in either the 2024 or 2025 Appropriation Acts. This is unlawful, it is reckless, and it is unacceptable,” the statement reads.
The coalition said the contradictions point to a troubling pattern in the fiscal management of the country, where legal obligations are ignored while off-budget expenditures receive priority.
According to the group, this not only undermines transparency but also destroys confidence in the sanctity of the budget process.
“What we are witnessing is a distortion of governance itself. Appropriation is the foundation of democracy, the guarantee that public money is spent as authorised by the people through their representatives,” the group declared.
“If ministers and accountants can disregard this at will, then the National Assembly must rise up. It is the duty of lawmakers now to assert their authority by removing those who have so flagrantly undermined them.”
The coalition noted that contractors across the federation have complained of crippling debts, many of them having borrowed at exorbitant rates from commercial banks to deliver on government projects.
CEAPF said the neglect has created a chain reaction of economic distress, hitting small businesses, suppliers, and workers who depend on the contracting system for their livelihoods.
“Government contracts are supposed to stimulate the economy. Instead, under the stewardship of Mr. Wale Edun and the Accountant General, they have become instruments of ruin. Firms are collapsing, workers are being laid off, and banks are foreclosing on loans. This is economic sabotage by negligence,” the statement said.
The group argued that the crisis has become both a financial and moral issue, one that cannot be resolved by half-measures.
It insisted that resignation was the only honourable course left for the finance minister and the accountant general, stressing that anything less would amount to a “mockery of accountability”.
“Our democracy cannot survive on promises that are never kept. If a government can budget for projects, award them, certify them, and then refuse to pay while diverting resources to unbudgeted ventures, what message does it send to citizens and investors? It tells the world that Nigeria is lawless and that contracts mean nothing. That is why we must draw a line here.”
The coalition also called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene decisively, saying his own reputation as a reformer was being called into question by the finance ministry’s failings.
“The President has spoken of fiscal discipline and reform. This is the moment to prove that those words have meaning. If his team members cannot carry out the most basic function of governance, honouring the budget and paying for executed contracts, then they must step aside for those who can,” the group declared.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) on Tuesday said 12 people were injured out of the 583 passengers on board the Asham train that derailed in Abuja.
The Director General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh, disclosed this while giving updates on the ongoing investigation.
He explained that an Investigator-in-Charge (IIC) has been appointed to lead the probe, working alongside relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
According to him, the team has already taken evidence-protection measures, such as securing the site and preserving critical data, including CCTV footage and other materials that could help determine the cause of the derailment.
Badeh appealed to the Federal Government and other stakeholders to address funding shortfalls in order to enhance the bureau’s capacity for thorough investigations and safeguard the lives of Nigerians.
The NSIB stated that final report will be released within 30 days of the incident, 23 days from today, and will be shared with the NRC, regulatory authorities, and the general public.
The incident occurred last tuesday Tuesday along the Kaduna corridor shortly after the train left Abuja at about 11 am, en route to Kaduna.
A passenger on board the train described the scene as chaotic, with people scrambling to safety.
Following the incident, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) suspended train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna route till further notice.
Opeifa had while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, hours after the incident said that some technical staff of the corporation, alongside the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and other relevant agencies, were on the ground at the train derailment site carrying out an investigation.
He also dismissed claims that the trains were not in good condition and said the refund of the ticket fees had been initiated for all passengers on board.

Renowned journalist Reuben Abati has sharply criticized Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, accusing him of lacking the moral authority to speak recklessly about prominent figures like Peter Obi, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
In a fiery statement on September 2, 2025, Abati took a swipe at Wike, saying, “Wike is not in a position to talk about character. In fact, he should question his own character.”
Abati’s remarks, aired during a segment on Arise TV, comes in response to Wike’s recent comments targeting Obi, Jonathan, and El-Rufai, which have sparked widespread controversy.
Abati lambasted the media for amplifying Wike’s remarks, alleging that some outlets are complicit in giving him a platform in exchange for financial incentives.
“I blame the media. Yesterday, he was talking about Peter Obi, Jonathan, and El-Rufai. The media are the ones going to interview him, and they are the ones collecting money,” Abati stated.
The veteran journalist urged Wike to reflect on his own conduct before criticizing others, arguing that his attacks lack intelligence and credibility.
“Wike doesn’t have the moral ground to speak recklessly and unintelligently about these individuals,” Abati added, calling for more responsible discourse in Nigerian politics.
The controversy follows Wike’s recent statements during a media chat, which have drawn mixed reactions on social media and among political analysts.
As a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a prominent ally of the current administration, Wike’s remarks have intensified debates about political decorum and media ethics.
