Foundation beam is usually applicable on grounds with low bearing capacity such as muddy clay or silt soil types. It is also applicable when constructing high rise building.
The aim is to prevent differential settlement of a building sub-structure, thereby stopping cracks and subsequent failure.
The load (weight) of the proposed structure and rate of instability of the soil types determines the depth and strength of the beam to be used.
