A United Front Against Childhood Cancer: Highlights from TCCS
The Childhood Cancer Symposium (TCCS) held on August 2, 2025, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. It was a remarkable gathering of cancer advocates, medical experts, and community members united by the drive to understand the realities and address the issues surrounding childhood cancer in Nigeria. It was a hybrid event with participants outside Uyo streaming online.
The event featured the President of the Nigerian Cancer Society — Prof. Abidemi Omonisi as Guest Speaker and Associate Professor of Paediatric Haemato-Oncology, University of Uyo — Dr. Eno-Obong Udomobong Bassey as the Keynote Speaker.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Inibehe Silas Etukodo, was ably represented by Ms. Rita P. Major. We also had the presence of Ms. Aniebiet Francis — SA to the Governor on New Media.
The highlight of the day was the screening of MELEE – A Short Film on Childhood Cancer, which touched hearts and sparked important conversations about hope, resilience, and collective action. MELEE is produced by Idy Smith, Usoro Emmanuel, and Becky Odungide Asindi, and directed by Frank Abasiekong.
Apart from the impact of the film, Parents of Childhood Cancer warriors were present to share their experiences and this was the moment of truth that deepened emotions, strengthened hope and renewed commitment to the fight against childhood cancer for participants.
The event featured goodwill messages from representatives of the Nigerian Cancer Society Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Akanimo Cancer Foundation, Myrrh-Isemin Childhood Cancer Awareness Foundation, Only Believe Care Foundation, RenyCare Foundation, Students of Paediatrics, UNIUYO, Toast Masters International, and others.
A panel session, moderated by Pharmacist Joseph Oyong, provided an in-depth discussion on holistic care in childhood cancer.
