Haven Initiative

Haven Initiative for Women and Children Development and Safety (HIWCDS) strongly condemn the abduction of 46 persons, including 39 children and 7 teachers, from schools in Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities of Oriire LGA, Ogbomoso, which occurred on May 15, 2026. We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of 3 lives recorded from the incident.

As an organization championing child safeguarding and protection in Oyo State, we recognize the severe emotional, psychological, and developmental impact such traumatic experiences can have on children, especially those as young as 2 years and above. Exposure to violence, fear, and insecurity can affect a child’s sense of safety, emotional well-being, learning ability, and long-term development.

We acknowledge and commend the swift response already taken by the Oyo State Government and relevant security agencies. However, we strongly encourage continuous and intensified action to ensure the safe protection of lives, rescue victims, and strengthen security across vulnerable communities.

Every child deserves safety. Every school should remain a place of protection, not fear. Every teacher must be safe.

Today, as we commemorate the International Day of the Boy Child, Haven Initiative for Women and Children Development and Safety (HIWCDS) celebrates every boy and reaffirms the importance of raising boys who are protected, responsible, confident, and empowered to thrive positively in society.

The 2026 theme, “Flourish and Thrive: Investing in Boys for Stronger Families and Communities,” reminds us that when boys are guided with the right values, protection, education, and opportunities, they grow into men who contribute meaningfully to safer homes and stronger communities.

At Haven Initiative, our commitment to safeguarding, youth development, human rights, and community engagement includes creating safe spaces where boys and girls alike can reach their full potential free from violence, neglect, and harmful social pressures.

Every boy deserves protection, purpose, and the opportunity to thrive.
