House of GAA: A Review

While I can't deny the entertainment value of the movie, as it is a beautifully crafted work of art with impressive cinematography, editing, and visual composition, I do have significant concerns.

If this were purely a work of fiction, it would pass the vibe check with flying colors. It's an enjoyable film that I would recommend. However, the filmmakers claimed they were reinterpreting history, focusing on one of the most intriguing figures in Yoruba history. In doing so, they had a responsibility to get the facts right.

For example, nobody wore Damask during the time of Bashorun GAA. Including it in the film is not just inaccurate; it’s frustratingly misleading.

There are many documented versions of Bashorun GAA's story, each with its nuances, but this film presents the most diluted version I’ve encountered. For instance, Ibadan did not exist as a recognized town during GAA's time, yet the film depicts him sending governors to a place called Ibadan.

Additionally, the GAA era predates Afonja, meaning there were no Fulani rulers in Ilorin at that time, making their inclusion in the film incorrect. Also, the only surviving son of GAA fled to Borgu, not Ilorin as the movie suggests.

Perhaps most frustrating is the portrayal of Yoruba warriors. No version of Yoruba history depicts them wearing leather clothing, and the filmmakers completely erased traditional worship practices, which were integral to the era. Aare Oyabi goes to war without consulting his gods, wearing no traditional amulet, making no incantations, and instead engages in what seems like a martial arts display—this is not an accurate representation of Yoruba warriors, who were believed to have mystical powers, not just physical prowess.

For example, GAA was said to be capable of transforming into an elephant, a figure of immense power, not simply a knife-wielding fighter. Femi Adebayo managed to balance traditional elements and modern action in "Jagun Jagun," blending sword fighting with the spiritual power derived from Ogun and Sango worship—something this film missed entirely.

Furthermore, no Alaafin other than Sango is said to have hanged himself, and GAA wasn’t burned alive. Historical accounts state he was tied up and tortured over several days before dying.

Lastly, the language used in the film is disappointing. The actors struggled with the Yoruba language, speaking it like foreigners rather than using the distinct Oyo Ile accent, which has a unique quality that wasn’t accurately portrayed.

In conclusion, while *House of GAA* delivers on entertainment, it fails to contribute anything meaningful to historical understanding and teaches the audience nothing about the actual history it claims to depict.

Hetty Green...the most stingy woman in history, her wealth is estimated at more than $2.3 billion. Hetty Greene was born in America in 1835. She was the only daughter of a wealthy businessman.

She inherited from her father a fortune estimated at $7.5 million. When she was twenty-one years old, she moved to live in New York to invest her money in Wall Street and was called the Wicked Witch of Wall Street.

She married a millionaire like herself, but still lived on leftover cakes and broken biscuits in grocery stores and argued to get a free bone for her dog every day!! Hetty Greene was a very miserable woman. She sewed underpants when she was 16 years old and did not change them or buy others until the day of her death.

She never spent a penny, so it was said that she never used hot water, that she wore a black dress that she did not change until it was completely worn out, and that she lived on eating a pie that cost only two cents.

Hetty caused her son to amputate his leg because when he broke it, she delayed treating it because she insisted not to She spent no money and kept looking for free medical attention.

Hetty Greene died in 1916 at the age of 81 in New York City, and was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “most stingy person in the world.”

The cause of her death was a stroke due to a quarrel with her maid because the maid asked for an increase in her meager salary.

She diied and left behind a huge fortune, and her children did not inherit her extreme stinginess, but rather they were generous to the point that her daughter built a free hospital with her money!! ☕️
