It's true!
Between 1912 and 1948 art competitions were a part of the Olympics which was the intention of the Olympics movement's founder, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Medals were awarded for architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture.
There's a reason, though, why so few of us have ever heard of these Olympic art competitions. Art history and Olympic history both largely glossed over them because, to put it simply, they had little impact on either one.
The juried art competitions were abandoned in 1954 because artists were considered to be professionals, while Olympic athletes were required to be amateurs. Since 1956, the Olympic cultural program has taken its place.
