Who can wear Alb?
In the Catholic liturgy, the alb is a white liturgical garment that symbolizes purity and the baptismal dignity of the Christian.
The alb may be worn by:
* Bishops
* Priests
* Deacons
* Instituted acolytes and lectors
* Altar servers (boys or girls, depending on local practice)
* Other ministers who have a liturgical role during the celebration
Functions of the alb
1. Symbol of Baptism – Its white color recalls the white garment received at Baptism and the call to holiness.
2. Common Liturgical Vestment – It is the basic garment worn by ordained ministers and other liturgical ministers.
3. Sign of Service – It indicates that the person is carrying out a liturgical ministry in the Church.
4. Garment of Purity – Traditionally, it reminds the wearer to serve God with a pure heart.
For priests and bishops, the alb is usually worn under the stole and chasuble. For deacons, it is worn under the stole and dalmatic. Altar servers often wear the alb alone or with a cincture (rope belt).

The main difference between a permanent deacon and a transitional deacon is their vocation and future ministry.
𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐧
* Receives the Sacrament of Holy Orders as a deacon and remains a deacon for life.
* Usually does not become a priest.
* May be married before ordination (if his wife dies, he normally does not remarry without special permission).
* Assists at Mass, proclaims the Gospel, preaches, baptizes, witnesses marriages, and performs charitable works.
𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐧 ‼️
* A seminarian ordained to the diaconate as a step toward the priesthood.
* Serves as a deacon for a limited period (usually about 6 months to a year) before priestly ordination.
* Must remain celibate.
* Performs the same liturgical functions as a deacon but is preparing to become a priest.
In Summary
A permanent deacon is called to remain in the diaconate for life, while a transitional deacon is on the path to becoming a priest.
