A Nigerian court has ordered the British Government to pay 20 million British pounds (€23 million/$27 million) in compensation to each of the families of 21 coal miners killed by colonial authorities in 1949 in southeastern Nigeria. The ruling was delivered by Justice Anthony Onovo of the Enugu High Court, which also directed Britain to issue a formal apology for the killings. The miners were reportedly shot at the Iva Valley Coal Mine on November 18, 1949 while protesting poor working conditions, racial wage discrimination and unpaid salaries. After management rejected their demands, the miners staged a "go-slow" protest and occupied the mine. The British superintendent responded by opening fire, killing 21 miners and injuring 51 others. The case was filed by rights activist Greg Onoh against both the British and Nigerian governments, although Britain was not represented by legal counsel during the proceedings. . RIGHT
