History was made as Ofatura and Ovonum signed their first-ever Peace Accord in over 70 years.

After decades of tension and strife, both communities finally put pen to paper, committing to peaceful coexistence and mutual respect. In a deeply emotional ceremony, representatives from both sides shook hands, embraced one another, and took a solemn oath before the Holy Bible presented by The Gideons International.

The atmosphere was heavy with emotion, tears flowed, voices trembled, and hearts opened. You could feel the weight of the past and the courage it took to let go. But in that moment, healing began.

This is not just a peace agreement; it is the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with hope, restoration, and unity.

Community Dialogue Sessions

Voices from the Communities
Ofatura and Ovonum: Shared Pain, Shared Hopes

Listening to the Voices of the People

As part of our strategy to resolve the Crisis between both communities, Partners for Peace - Cross River P4P led by Amb. Ukorebi Esien facilitated separate dialogue sessions with the Ofatura and Ovonum communities to better understand their perspectives and pain points. During separate sessions, both communities shared their concerns:
while
Ofatura called for clear boundary demarcation and economic empowerment.
Ovonum expressed a desire to return to the old cooperative farming system that once united them.

The willingness to speak and listen opened a new chapter. These conversations paved the way for a joint peace mediation sessions.
These dialogues opened the door for empathy and honest conversations that lay the foundation for lasting peace

The Cross River State Chapter of Partners for Peace joined other stakeholders in a symbolic Gender and Inclusion Walk to commemorate His Excellency the Governor’s two years in office.

The event, organized by the Office of the Special Assistant on Gender Mainstreaming, brought together civil society groups, government agencies, youth leaders, and development partners in a united front for inclusive governance and gender equity in Cross River State.

We are proud to have marched in solidarity for a more inclusive, equitable, and peaceful society.
