From Mud to Art - my creative process šŸŗ

One of the most beautiful things about ceramics is the journey itself.

What begins as a simple lump of earth — something many people would overlook — slowly transforms through patience, skill, and imagination into something meaningful.

Along the way, the clay is wedged, shaped, trimmed, dried, fired, and refined. Each stage adds something new to its story. Every touch leaves a mark. Every decision influences the final outcome.

In many ways, the journey of clay mirrors our own. Growth takes time. Transformation requires patience. And the most meaningful results are often shaped through a process that cannot be rushed.

That's why I never see clay as just mud.

I see potential.

Because given enough care, dedication, and time, even the simplest lump of earth can become a work of art.

And perhaps the same is true for us.

When do you feel most connected to your creativity?

One of the most important lessons in pottery is learning when to stop shaping a piece.

It's tempting to keep adjusting, refining, and making "just one more change." But sometimes, the more we work a form, the further we move away from what made it beautiful in the first place.

Clay has a way of teaching restraint. There comes a moment when a piece has said all it needs to say, and the wisest thing a potter can do is step back and leave it alone.

Knowing when to continue is a skill. Knowing when to stop is an even greater one.

Some of the best pots are not the ones that were worked the hardest, but the ones that were left alone at the right moment.

One thing I've learned is that good throwing often comes down to rhythm.

Working at a consistent wheel speed, while keeping your hands moving in harmony with the clay, creates a flow that makes the entire process feel more natural. The key isn't using the fastest or slowest speed — it's finding a rhythm that suits your style of work.

Every potter develops their own pace. What matters is that your hands, the wheel, and the clay are working together, not against each other.

When that balance is found, throwing becomes less about force and more about control, confidence, and flow.

Sometimes, the best forms come from simply finding your rhythm and trusting it.

You can only keep one: pottery wheel, favorite tool, or kiln. What's staying?

Clay on its own is simply a material full of possibilities.

But in the hands of a maker, it can become something more — a vessel, a sculpture, a story, or a work of art. Through skill, imagination, and patience, a simple lump of earth is transformed into something meaningful.

That's one of the things I love about ceramics. It reminds us that art is not only in the material itself, but in the vision and dedication of the person shaping it.

The clay provides the potential. The hands bring it to life.

What's taking up the most space in your studio right now?

Here's another swirl mug fresh from the studio.

No matter how many I make, each one feels unique. The flowing patterns created by the different clays never arrange themselves in exactly the same way twice, giving every mug its own distinct character.

That's one of the things I enjoy most about working with swirl clay. There's always an element of discovery. You can guide the process, but the clay still finds its own way of creating beautiful movement and patterns.

Another mug. Another pattern. Another reminder that no two handmade pieces are ever truly alike.
