WHY DO COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS DO SO MUCH MATHS?🤔

Here's a classroom story that perfectly illustrates why maths and programming go hand in hand.

During a session with freshmen about to start their industrial training, I posed a simple question on the board:

A = B
B = C
C = 5
What is A?

Surprisingly, 70% of the class needed more than two minutes to answer. This highlighted a key issue: if you can't easily solve this, programming might be tough.

Programming is, at its core, logical problem-solving. Maths trains you to think in this structured way. While you may not always be crunching numbers in code, the computational thinking math instills is essential for writing algorithms and solving real-world problems.

So yes, math might seem unrelated, but without understanding the logic behind it, coding can feel like a mountain. For instance, writing a program to calculate the average of three numbers is impossible without first understanding how to do that mathematically.

In short, math and programming are partners—one sharpens your problem-solving skills, and the other tests them!

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PROGRAMMER AND A DEVELOPER?

The difference between a programmer and a developer is similar to the distinction between the training offered by most tertiary institutions and that provided by Arvys.

A programmer puts effort into fully learning and understanding a language, being efficient in code-writing in his chosen language(s), understanding deep concepts and having full command of a language and all its features.

A developer however, pays more attention to problem solving with his programming knowledge.
He is concerned about building functional systems with his codes. This might require knowledge of system design, requirement analysis and others.
A developer might need to learn languages pertaining to UI or frontend, backend system logic, databases and all aspects of building a system.

A programmer codes, a developer builds.✍️

In universities, we are taught programming languages. At Arvys, you are taught development languages.
