Lesson 47

Topic: Jesus Appeared unto the Disciples after Resurrection

Memory Verse: "Peace be unto you: as my father hath sent me, even so send I you" (John 20:21)

Lesson Reading: John 20: 18-31

Central truth: Christ's ascension into heaven, there, to plead for us, is likewise as unspeakable comfort.

Aim of lesson: To reveal Christ as a living Saviour and Redeemer.

Introduction: This world is not our home, and not a resting place for the saints. Our eyes, focus, hopes and desires must be on another world, and should be upon our hearts, where Christ sits at the Right hand of God, the Father.

Lesson Exposition:

1. Peace and strength to the fearful disciples. John 20:18- 24

(i) Every word of Christ which is received in the heart by faith, comes accompanied by this Divine breathing, and without this there is neither light nor life.

(ii) When we assemble in Christ's name, especially on His holy day, He will meet with us, and speak peace to us.

(iii) The disciples of Christ should endeavor to build up one another in their most holy faith, both by repeating what they have heard to those that were absent, and by making known what they have experienced.

2. The unbelieving and doubting disciple. John 20:25-31

(i) There is not an unbelieving word in our tongues, nor thoughts in our minds, that is not known to the Lord Jesus, and He was pleased to Himself even to Thomas, rather than leave him in his unbelief.

(ii) Thomas was ashamed of his unbelief, and cried out, "my Lord and my God affection, as one that might.", He spoke with took hold of Christ with all his the duty of those who read and hear the gospel,

(iii) It is embrace the doctrine of Christ, and the record concerning him. 1 John 5:11

Conclusion: There were other signs and proofs of our Lord's resurrection, but these were committed to writing, that all might believe that Jesus was the promised Messiah, the Saviour of sinners, and the Son of God, and by faith

Lesson 44

Topic: Jesus is Laid in the Sepulchre

Memory Verse: "Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to burry." (John 19:40)

Lesson Reading: John 19:36-42

Central Truth: When God has work to do, He can find out such as are proper to do it.

Aim of Lesson: To know that impacts the dead was created.

Introduction: Christ was buried in the sepulchre. Here is the sun of Righteousness set for a while, to rise again in greater glory, and then to set no more.

LESSON EXPOSITION

1. Personalities at His Burial. John 19:36-40
(i) Joseph of Arimiathea was a disciple of Christ in secret - Disciples should openly own themselves.

(ii) The embalming was done by Nichodemus, a secret friend to Jesus, though not his constant follower.

Note: These two rich men showed the value they had for the person of Christ and His doctrine, and that it was not lessened by the reproach of the cross.

(a) When God has work to do, He can find out such as are proper, fit and qualified to do it.
(b) We must do our duty as the present day and opportunity are, and leave it to God to fulfil His promises in His own way and His own time.

2. The site of the sepulchre. John 19:41-42
(i) The grave of Jesus was appointed with the wicked, as was the case of those who suffered as criminals; but He was with them-in His death, as prophesied, (Isa. 53:9)

(ii) He was buried in a new sepulchre; therefore, it could not be said that it was not He but some other that rose

Conclusion: We are here taught not to be particular as to the place of our burial.

Lesson 43

Topic: Jesus on the Cross

Memory Verse: "Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith 'I thirst" (John 19:28)

Lesson Reading: John 19:25-35

Central Truth: His life was not taken from Him by force, but freely given up.

Aim of Lesson: To emphasize on the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Introduction: On the cross, Jesus gave up the ghost and His side was pierced with a sword.

LESSON EXPOSITION

1. Jesus provided for His mother. John 19:25-29 N/B: At His death, Jesus tenderly provided for His mother. (i) Sometimes, when God removes one comfort from us, He raises up another for us. when we looked not for it.

(ii) Christ's example should teach all men to honour their parents in life and death, How? (a) to provide for their wants and
(b) to promote their comfort by every means in their power or within their reach.

2. Jesus' dying word. John 19:30-32
Observe the dying word where with Jesus breathed out His soul- it is finished! Meaning:

(i) The counsels of the Father concerning His sufferings were now fulfilled.
(ii) The ceremonial law is abolished;
(iii) The substance is now come, and all the shadows are done away.
(iv) An end is made of transgression by bringing in an everlasting righteousness.
(v) The work of man's redemption and salvation is now completed Confirmation of His death. John 19:19-33-35

3. Note: A trial was made to whether Jesus was dead - He died in less time that persons crucified commonly did.
(i) It showed that He had laid down His life of Himself.
(ii) The spear broke up the very fountains of life.
(iii) Being so solemnly attested, shows there was something peculiar in it.
(iv) The blood and water that flowed out signified those two benefits which all believers partake of through Christ- Justification and sanctification; blood for atonement, water for purification.

Lesson 42

Topic: Christ's Crucifixion

Memory Verse: "But they cried out, Away with him, away with Him..." (John 19:15)

Lesson Reading: John 19:10-24

Central truth: Christ did not die at the altar among the sacrifices, but among criminals sacrificed to public Justice.

Aim of lesson: To highlight the sacrifice being fulfilled.

Introduction: Now was the son of man delivered into the hands of wicked and unreasonable men.

LESSON EXPOSITION

1) A confused Pilate. John 19:10-16
(i) Even natural conscience makes men afraid of being
found fighting against God
(ii) As our Lord suffered for the sins of both Jews and Gentiles, it was a special part of the counsel of Divine wisdom, that the Jews should first purpose his death, while the Gentiles carry that purpose into effect.

2) A match to Golgotha. John 19: 17-24
(i) Had not Christ been rejected of men, we may have
been forever rejected of God
(ii) He was led forth for us, that we might escape. He was nailed to the cross, as a sacrifice bound to the altar.

Conclusion: Let us now pause, and with faith look upon Jesus. Was ever Sorrow like unto His sorrow? See Him bleeding, see Him dying, see Him and love Him, and live for Him!

Lesson 40

Topic: Jesus before Pilate Judgement seat

Memory Verse: "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I unto the world, that I shall bear witness unto the truth"

Lesson Reading: John 18:35-40

Central truth: No human was qualify to Judge Christ because he was without sin and fault.

Aim: To teach us that Jesus who came to save man from sin cannot by human find him a sinner.

Introduction: Jesus declared that he came to bear witness about the truth, that is in him and the father (John 14:6) what is the truth Pilate asked, the truth they couldn't understand until he was crucified, Pilate was a wavering judge who initially exonerated Jesus before bending to the will of the crowd and condemning him to death.

LESSON EXPOSITION

1. Pilate's Questions. John 18:35-37
Pilate knew no real charge against Jesus but only what the ruler told him about Jesus Jesus confessed that he is a king and his kingdom is not of this world, because he receives his power and authority from above to bear witness to the truth.

2. Pilate find no fault in Jesus. John 18: 38-40 Pilate was puzzled because he couldn't know and recognize the one that was before him. He hurriedly informed the Jews that he finds no fault in him at all. though he tried to release him by his scheme but the pressure from the Jews was so much that he had to condemn Jesus to dead.

Conclusion: It is very difficult to have clear justice in the world. The only true and right judge is Jesus Christ.

Lesson 39

Topic: Peter Outrightly Denied Christ.

Memory Verse: "And Peter went out and wept bitterly." Luke 22:62

Lesson Reading: John 18:24-34

Central Truth: Peter denied Christ and became converted when he realized himself. How many are denying Christ today?

Aim: To teach us that we should not rely on our strength to obey the word of God but to depend on his GRACE.

Introduction: Jesus predicted the denial of Peter stating he will deny him before rooster crow. Following the arrest of Jesus, Peter denied him three times but the third denial heard the rooster crow. he recalls the prediction and began to cry bitterly.

LESSON EXPOSITION

1. The c**k crows. John 18:25-27 Peter for the second and third time denied Christ immediately he heard the crowing of the rooster and was reminded of the word of the Lord. He was very sorrowful indicating repentance.

2. Jesus appear before Pilate. John 18:28-34 Pilate began the trial of Jesus by asking the Jews to state his offence and they were not able to produce any and all they wanted Pilate to do was to sentence him to death so that blame will be on Pilate. The Jews accused him the king of the Jews but Jesus confessed that he came to bear witness of the truth.

Conclusion: Everybody should be mindful of what we do with Christ whether good or bad. There is always an after effect.

LESSON 38

TOPIC: Jesus Before The High Priest

MEMORY VERSE: "Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should due for people." John 18:24.

TEXT: John 18:12-23

CENTRAL TRUTH: The arrest of Jesus and death was primarily for the salvation of mankind.

AIM: To encourage believers to stay true to their faith irrespective of trails, afflictions and persecution.

LESSON EXPOSITION
1. Jesus before Anna's and Caiaphas. John 18:12-14
Jesus was arrested, bound and taken to the religious leaders before Roman Authority. Men who were set aside to enter into the presence of God for the people, were the same men who condemn the son of God who came to save humanity.

2. Peter's first denial of Jesus. John 18:15-18
It is important to note that Peter's first denial of Jesus was not before great men and terrifying soldiers but before a servant girl who kept the door. He denied that he was the disciple of Jesus. Lots of believers denied Christ on very simple things.

3. Jesus questioned and slapped. John 18:19-23.
With perfect poise and unanswerable logic, the saviour showed their unfair position. They could not accuse him of speaking evil, yet they slapped him for telling the truth.

CONCLUSION
It is clear that those people had no real case with Jesus and so they were trying to find one.
