Education Minister Applaud Soludo For Transforming Education Sector, Task Other States To Emulate Him

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mammam, has commended the Governor of Anambra state Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo for transforming the educational sector in Anambra state and urged states in the country to emulate the Anambra state government especially in the area of basic education.

Mammam made this known when Governor Soludo paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Education, in Abuja, where he acquainted him with the achievements he has made in the state education sector.

Prof Mamman expressed deep appreciation and commended the outstanding developmental achievements witnessed in Anambra State under Governor Soludo’s leadership.

"We will be leaning on you to serve as a model of what we want states to be in terms of meeting their obligations. If other states are doing what you are doing, we wouldn’t be at this level, Nigeria education sector would have been a better place” he said.

Prof Mamman further assured Governor Soludo of the ministry’s collaboration in every way possible.

“We will continue to provide the policies to ensure no state is left behind and no child is out of school”. Said Mamman

Speaking also, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu called for massive and effective collaboration to help reduce the number of out-of-school children in the country.

He noted that a roadmap to actualise set objectives in the education sector will be launched soon and expressed hope that the governor will be there to contribute his expertise in taking the sector forward.

Received by the Honourable Minister of Education, Minister of State for Education and top Directors of the ministry, Governor Soludo used the opportunity to extend his heartfelt felicitations to the ministers on their well-deserved appointments

Governor Soludo also provided an update on the remarkable progress and developments in the field of education in Anambra State under his administration.

The governor also highlighted that the state has cleared its counterpart funding for the past three years to boost education in the state.

The federal government is a very critical player in this field of education; as we know, education is on the concurrent list. The federal and states work together.
Governor Soludo, reiterated that Nigeria, as a nation, must heavily invest in public primary and secondary schools to provide children of the “poorest of the poor” with access to quality basic education.

He assured that his administration is focused on lifting the system of public schools to become the model that others will look up to

Establishment of the Diocese of Katsina (Nigeria) and Appointment of the First Bishop

The Holy Father has erected the new Diocese of Katsina (Nigeria) by dismembering the Diocese of Sokoto, making it a suffragan of the Metropolitan See of Kaduna. At the same time he appointed, as the first Bishop of the newly erected Diocese, the Rev. Gerald Mamman Musa, of the clergy of the Diocese of Sokoto, Professor and Director of the Center for Studies on African Culture and Communication (CESACC) at the “Catholic Institute of West Africa” (CIWA), Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Curriculum vitae:

Msgr. Gerald Mamman Musa was born on 16 January 1971 in Gusau, Zamfara State. After attending Saint Thomas Aquinas' Major Seminary in Makurdi and Saint Augustine's Major Seminary in Jos, he was ordained as a priest on 1 June 1996 for the clergy of the Diocese of Sokoto. He holds a Master's degree in Dogmatic Theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), a Licentiate in Social Sciences, with specialization in Communication, from the Pontifical Gregorian University and a Doctorate in Communication Studies from the School of Journalism and Communication of University of Queensland in Saint Lucia, Brisbane (Australia).

He has held the following positions:

Vicar of the Administrator of the Holy Family Cathedral, Sokoto, and Diocesan Secretary, at the Diocesan Chancellery of Sokoto (1996-2000); Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at the Sokoto State level (1998-2000); Exco member of the Nigeria Interreligious Council and parish priest of St. Patrick's in Illela, Sokoto State (2001-2003); Parish Priest of St. Vincent Ferrer in Malumfashi, Katsina State (2007-2008); Resident priest at St. Bernard, Upper Mount Gravatt, Archdiocese of Brisbane (2008-2011); Resident Priest at the Jubilee Catholic Parish, and Assistant Chaplain at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Archdiocese of Brisbane (2011-2012); Parish Administrator of Upper Mount Gravatt-Wishart Parish, Archdiocese of Brisbane (2012-2013). From 2013 to date he has been Professor and Director of the Center for Studies on African Culture and Communication (CESACC) at the Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA), Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Statistics:

The newly erected Diocese of Katsina [nom. lat. Katsinensis] was dismembered from the Diocese of Sokoto and made a suffragan of the Metropolitan See of Kaduna. The Headquarters of the Diocese is in the city of Katsina. The Cathedral church of the new ecclesiastical district will be the current St. Martin de Porres, in Katsina.

*SOLUDO PRESENTS CHEQUE WORTH N1.524 BILLION NAIRA TO ANAMBRA MISSION SCHOOLS TO IMPROVE EDUCATION IN THE STATE*

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, presented cheques worth N1.524 billion to mission schools in the state as government support to improve quality of education and infrastructure.

Governor Soludo presented the cheques to owners/operators of Anambra Mission Schools during a meeting held at Government Lodge, Amawbia.

A total of 762 Anambra Mission Schools received N2,000,000 each from the government of Anambra State.

Eight (8) schools returned to Salvation Army Schools received a total sum of N16,000,000.

Two hundred and seventy-five (275) schools returned to Anambra Anglican Mission Public Schools received a total sum of N550,000,000, while four hundred and fifty-nine (459) schools returned to Anambra Catholic Mission Public Schools received a total sum of N918,000,000.

Twenty (20) schools initially owned by Anambra Pentecostal Schools received a total sum of N40,000,000.

In a remark, the governor said that the education sector is one large sector, for which his administration has a large agenda.

He applauded owners of mission schools for their active participation in the health sector, of which most hospitals belong and decried the state of public sector components in the area of education and health.

Governor Soludo noted that both sectors are fundamentally slacking backwards and that part of his agenda is to restore them, which is part of the primary duty of government anywhere in the world.

The governor recalled that when he assumed office, no general hospitals had doctors.

He however, assured that all general hospitals will be equipped with solar power so that ndi Anambra can have access to a qualitative healthcare system and educational system, especially the poorest of the poor.

The Governor disclosed that hundreds of quack hospitals are in operation and reiterated his commitment to clean up the sector and make it work.

"In the area of education, this is why we are here and what we are trying to achieve on education is also the same we want to achieve in the public health sector," Governor Soludo said.

He expressed displeasure that the society is creating two sets of citizens; the children of the poor abandoned in public schools and the children of the rich/average who can afford missions or private schools.

He maintained his vision is to develop human capital in the state that will be productive at home and exportable abroad as well as to refurbish and recreate schools that will be smart, digital inclined. He also disclosed his plans to commence Leadership Science and Technology Schools.

"We shall be encouraging ndi Anambra to adopt schools in their communities but even if you can't, you can at least buy a pencil for a child. You will be amazed at what difference you can make. Club of Patrons will be formed in these public schools. We want communities to take ownership of these schools," he said.

Governor Soludo appreciated operators of Mission schools for their efforts over the years and what they will continue to do, describing them as almost being a substitute for the government.

In a vote of thanks, the Chairman of PFN, Anambra State Chapter, Bishop Moses Ezedebego on behalf of all Anambra Mission Schools said that the Governor has demonstrated leadership, showing that all religious denominations can work together as a family.

Bishop Ezedebego stressed that the Governor has wiped the tears of uncountable millions of poor ndi Anambra and his deeds today will remain indelible in the annals of the State history

The Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim joined the Governor at the event.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Chief of Staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, Bishop Awka Diocese and Archbishop of the Niger Province, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, the Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, Catholic Bishop of Nnewi, Most Jonas-Benson Okoye, Bishops among others attended the meeting which featured a debrief by the Commissioner for Health on the health sector.

WORLD TEACHERS' DAY: SOLUDO PLEDGES TO REBUILD PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PROVIDE QUALITATIVE EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN OF THE POOR

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR, has reiterated the promise of rebuilding public school infrastructure and provide access to qualitative education for children of the poor.

Governor Soludo stated this during the celebration of the 2023 World Teachers Day Celebration held at Anambra Teachers' House, Awka.

The Governor described teachers as the greatest in the world and said that everyone is a product of their hard work, diligence, and commitment.

He said that the government will work in partnership with communities to rebuild basic infrastructure in public schools.

Governor Soludo revealed that the next batch of recruited teachers will be specifically posted to public schools as his administration is ending the era of PTA teachers.

He also disclosed that the state government will equip public schools' libraries with basic textbooks so that students can easily have access to them for free, pointing out that teaching is not a job but a calling and that the state government is committed to improving the condition of teachers.

Speaking earlier, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Comrade Chika Chukwudozie, enumerated the challenges of the Union, seeking assistance from Governor Soludo in providing security for schools, providing more teachers in public schools, implementing the new requirement age for teachers, implementing the promotion of teachers, and assisting in providing transportation buses.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Chairman PPSSC, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, Chairman ASUBEB, Mrs. Vera Nwadinobi, Chairman of the Occasion, Dr. Chike Obienyem among others attended the event.

Mrs Soludo Warns Against Excessive Salt Intake, Says It Causes Heart Diseases, Deaths

Anambra Governor's wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo has called for urgent action to modify the over-production and over-consumption of foods and beverages that do not undergo healthy production and nutritional history.

Mrs Soludo who stated this in Awka while running a review of her healthy living projects over the last month, noted that she was very concerned about excessive consumption of foods with high content of sodium, sugar and unhealthy fats as against low intake of whole grains, pulses, vegetables and fruits.

Insisting that going full organic remains the surest way to cut down emerging killer diseases, the governor's wife stated that reducing sodium intake is one of the most cost-effective measures to improve health and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases.

She further added that the World Health Organization, WHO's current statistics that an estimated 1.89 million deaths each year are associated with consuming too much salt, calls for another look at the health value of foods that everyone consumes.

Mrs Soludo, who is a practicing nutritionist and right health advocate, listed the primary health effects associated with diets high in salt to include raised blood pressure, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, gastric cancer, obesity, among others.

She also called for the reformulation of food products to contain less salt and the setting of target levels for the amount of salt in foods and meals, especially among households.

For adults, WHO recommends less than 2000 milligram per day of sodium; equivalent to just under a teaspoon, while for children aged 2–15 years, it recommends adjusting the adult dose downward based on their energy requirements.

According to the global health watchdog, this recommendation for children does not address the period of exclusive breastfeeding (0–6 months) or complementary feeding with continued breastfeeding (6–24 months).

All salt that is consumed, WHO says, should be iodized, which is essential for healthy brain development in the foetus and young child and optimizing people’s mental function in general.

Acquire lifelong skills to be competitive — Dr Omenugha charges Youths

The Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Youth Empowerment Programme, Dr. Nelson Omenugha has charged the youths to acquire and develop lifelong skills to be competitive and relevant in today’s world. Dr Omenugha who attended Anambra State maiden Art Exhibition, commended the organizers and participating youths for utilizing the exhibition platform to showcase their skills and artworks to the world.

Dr Omenugha noted that “part of what this Art exhibition intends to achieve is to provide platform for skills and works to be showcased to the local and global audiences. This initiative speaks to the grand vision of Mr Governor, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo CFR who had elected to be the chief marketer and promoter of made in Anambra products.”
