HOW TO REINFORCE WHAT IS BEING TAUGHT IN SCHOOL.

It's the beginning of a new session and there is a lot to cover within the space of one year.

As a parent, you need to support your child at home to reinforce what is being taught in school, especially where reading is concerned.

Below are a few things you can do to reinforce what is being taught in school.

🌹Team up with your child's teacher. Don't leave the work to the teacher alone. Ask your child's teacher how you can help him or her with reading at home.

🌹Read to your child daily and also listen to your child read.

🌹Buy books for your child.

🌹After reading, ask him open-ended questions to help boost comprehension. Questions like 'What do you think will happen next?' Why did he do that?

🌹Let your child know that you value reading and let him know how important reading is.

🌹Don't just let them read words, let them read phrases and sentences too.

MY FINDINGS ABOUT PHONICS.

As a reading specialist, I discovered that phonics instruction is an important element in early reading instruction.


Phonics instruction is beneficial to all children, this includes children with learning difficulties, children who come to school with little or no exposure to books and even children from language-rich homes. Even adults who do not know how to read can learn to read with Phonics instruction.


I discovered that with phonics they learn to read and write because it helps them decode words and help them identify the different sounds that makeup words.

5 WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD BECOME BETTER AT READING.

There are many ways to help a child become better at reading. I am sharing five ways to help your child become better at reading.

🌹 Read aloud daily to your child. Reading aloud to children helps them build an interest in reading. You can do this for older children too.

🌹Help your child hear the sounds in spoken words.

🌹Teach your child the sounds of the letters of the alphabet. When teaching the sounds of the letters, avoid adding additional sounds at the end of consonants. e.g. Letter 'd' sounds /d/ and not 'duh', letter 'f' sounds /f/ and not 'fuh'

🌹Teach him or her how to join the sounds together to form words like /r/ /a/ /t/ rrrraaaaattttt.

🌹Give your child opportunities to read sentences daily with the sounds that he or she has been taught.
