General Assimi Goita said what many Africans have been thinking in silence: “Sometimes we need to repay evil with evil, so that evil knows that evil hurts.” This statement has sparked intense debate across the continent. Some call it necessary resistance. Others call it dangerous.

But one thing is clear — it touches a deep wound in our collective psyche. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: For centuries, religion — especially Christianity — has been one of the most powerful tools used to pacify Black and African people.

While our enemies burned villages, stole resources, enslaved us, and continue to exploit us today, we were taught to “turn the other cheek,” “pray for those who persecute you,” and wait for God to fight our battles.

How many times have we watched evil triumph while being told “God will handle it”? How many dictators, colonizers, and modern exploiters have slept peacefully while our people suffered, because we were conditioned to respond with prayer instead of power?

We are not saying abandon faith. Faith is important. But when faith becomes a tool that keeps us passive in the face of continuous evil — then that faith is part of the problem.

General Goita’s words challenge that mentality. They force us to ask: At what point does “forgiveness” become surrender? When does “peace” become acceptance of oppression? When does turning the other cheek mean letting evil walk all over us and our children?

Africa is still being looted. Our resources are still being stolen. Our leaders are still being undermined. And too many of us are still responding with prayers while our enemies respond with action. This is not about becoming monsters.

This is about understanding that sometimes evil only respects strength. What do you think?
